  1. Is the thread title sarcastic?
  2. Hendry would go out and pick up a bunch of guys who have high OBPs...but only thanks to their high batting averages. Nope. No more facial hair. And home grown veterans. Since there aren't any currently on the roster, Ty Griffen would play CF, Tuffy Rhodes in LF, and, uh, Chad Meyers would be signed to play 2B. They'd also get Frank Castillo and Steve Trachsel into the rotation.
  3. Prior, Wood, Zambrano, Garciaparra, Lee, Ramirez, Alou, Barrett, Sosa, Clement... Ugh, nevermind... I'll only get frustrated.
  4. If we were considering going the senile old man route, why not go all the way and bring in Earl Weaver? Now THAT'D be money. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Earl_Weaver Just a warning - there is some explicit content there.
  5. EDIT - N/M
  6. Shouldn't those be in reverse? Man, the Cubs even suck at futility.

Benson was carted off the practice field tonight with supposedly a shoulder injury resulting from a Brown and Urlacher hit. At first I thought the reports of the defense hitting Benson extra hard were just media hype. After this, I've lost a lot of respect for them.
  8. I don't know how exactly to explain it, Sullivan seems to have a tendency to always say that the Cubs are always not going to make a move. Like around trade deadlines and in the offseasons, he'll mention rumors and then say stuff like "don't look for anything to get done," or "don't count on it." Ok, I'm not sure I'm even making any sense with this post. Just something I've noticed.
  9. Chone Figgins? He's almost as bad as Pierre. No, thank you. Plus, he'll cost too much because of that highly overrated tool that Hendry suddenly loves so much... Mark Loretta, plz. (Really I just want Walker back to leadoff next year, but that'll never happen)
  10. His relationship is running hot right now... If ARAM leaves if Dusty leaves, I say bye bye ARAM. I hate to say it, but as much as I dislike Dusty...(and I REALLY REALLY hate him, as a manager, at least) I'm not sure if I could say that. Terrible managers will lose you games, to an extent (and I think Dusty might just be pushing the envelope on that), but not nearly as many as a lack of talent will. If we lose Aramis, our offense and our 3B position (not many out there) is REALLY screwed. So are you advocating keeping Dusty if it means keeping Aramis? While I agree that I don't think there's any reason to think it would come down to making the choice, if it came down to it, yes. If we had to keep Dusty around for Aramis to stay (which I don't think is the case, at all), I would have to say Dusty has to stay. It's not like Hendry is going to hire anyone better, anyway. Aramis is worth much more than a good manager.

  12. Man...they just showed some clips of Wood celebrating in that game against Clemens and the Yankees. I'm gonna miss Kerry...
  13. I'd say the Heat won because of Wade and a few incompetents in stripped shirts calling a few phantom fouls...but that's an argument for another thread. There were NFL referees at the NBA finals??
  14. Mentioning Aurilia and Kent as one of his great defensive middle infields...
  15. Bruce on WGN toeing the "company line," (yes, I realize he's not employed in any way by the Cubs or Tribune) saying that Hendry made out real well with Izturis. I can't blame him, it would be tough for him to go on there and blast the Cubs. I still can't believe what a terrible move this was. We dump one bad contract, wind up paying for it, and pick up an even worse albatross contract. Worse yet, we turned down two upper-level prospects, by Hendry's own admission. Our only hope is that Izturis's career takes a HUGE turn for the better... ](*,) ](*,)
  16. Why should that matter? The most important part of the job is getting on base. Speed is way back in the distance in terms of importance. Way, WAYYYYYY back. But, to answer the question, yes, he has. 2004 was such a long time ago. LOL... Actually, meant that speed was wayyy wayyy back in terms of importance. But I could see how that could be misinterpreted. Did Walk not lead off at all in 05? EDIT - Just checked. Only 2 AB's at leadoff in 05. Dusty is brilliant. Man, was Walker good leading off in 04. 228 AB's .294/.370/.545.. but, no. We needed a "leadoff hitter," so we've seen Corey Patterson and Juan Pierre at the top. :x :x :x

  18. My preferred option (which has been campaigned for here by vance and others) would be to stick Jones in CF and get a bat in RF, where they are much easier to come by. And if your question was regarding a leadoff hitter, we don't need the little quick guy who might steal bases. We just need someone who's really good at getting on base. It's a shame. We had a decent leadoff hitter on the roster, already. Unfortunately, he didn't hit there at all this season, and we shipped him off for basically nothing on Monday. Oh, well. He's in a better place. :x
  19. Very few posters here would disagree with you. Jon is just pointing out that the voters for these awards (Cy Young also) only seem to care about W-L records.

  21. You didn't ask about what's feasible, you asked what I wanted. And no, you don't have to have guys like Mientkiewicz in your lineup. I am a firm believer in offense first, offense last. Defense is an afterthought. And if the season ended today, the team with the best offense in the major leagues will not make the playoffs. Defense cannot be an afterthought. I'll agree hitting is more important, but you can't completely disregard defense and consider it worthless. You pretty much can, provided the guys you're talking about aren't complete butchers out there (think Todd Hundley in the outfield). You show me a great hitting and great pitching team with average to even slightly below average fielding, and I'll show you a great team.

Defense is an afterthought. And if the season ended today, the team with the best offense in the major leagues will not make the playoffs. That's because of pitching. Not "defense."
  23. Good post. The trade still sucks, though.
  24. Can't say I really agree with this. What bad contracts are they really bogged down by? Izturis? Neifi? Rusch? (I believe these two are signed for 07, I could be wrong, though) Jones? Not terrible, but still a lot of money tied up in bad players.
