    Apparently he’s a contributor at this very site! No idea what kind of connections he has. Interesting idea though. Crochet, Steele, Shota, Taillon, Boyd is a fascinating rotation. I know pitch shape has taken over handedness, but my lizard brain still can’t comprehend a rotation with four lefties.

    Season end right now they pick 14. They’re last in line among the 4-6 teams due to having the most difficult SOS.

    Honestly I love it. I feel like this was always the Izzo approach. Schedule a tough out of conference, which sometimes means getting into the tourney as a 6 seed or whatever, but by that point you’ve racked up all kinds of experience against top level competition. It might be a little bumpy early on but I think it’s good for the team in the long run.

    Absolutely. For football in particular. Waking up to the Bears London game and having the whole day left when it ended at 11:30 was the best.

    I don’t really get why it’s such a talking point with the bears. The Commanders, Bills and Packers are all four-win teams without wins over top tier opponents. There’s just a lot of bad teams in the NFL.

    He’s going to have ups and downs all year, but he’s shown week to week improvement each of the past two games. Last week on some deep balls, this week on picking up the pressure and finding his outlet. The short and intermediate passing game was working.

    Curious what years you’re considering false positives. I arbitrarily went back to 2002. Here are the times they’ve started 3-1 or 4-0: 2007: 3-1 (ended with a trip to the Rose Bowl) 2011 4-0 (wins over 10-3 Arkansas St., S Dak State, 6-7 Arizona State (ranked #22 when we faced them—maybe this year’s Kansas W winds up looking similar when the dust settles), and 6-7 Northwestern 2013 3-1 (SIU, 9-4 Cincinnati, and 0-12 Miami Ohio) 2014 3-1 (Youngstown State, 8-5 Kentucky, 7-5 Tx State) 2015 3-1 (3-9 Kent State, Western Illinois, 7-6 Middle Tennessee State) 2022 3-1 (finished 8-5, should’ve been 9-4…still not over the loss to Michigan So, it’s been mostly true negatives, two seasons I’d consider positive results, one false positive in 2011, and a few seasons of taking care of business against early season patsies.

    We have? How many 4-0 starts can you remember the Illini having? Unless you were born in the 1940’s, the answer, including 2024, is two. Go ahead enjoy it without the imposing sense of dread! They’ll probably lose to #10 Penn State in Happy Valley next week, and that’s ok. That doesn’t mean the wheels are coming off. Illinois started a stretch of 5 ranked opponents in 7 games two weeks ago. They’ve banked wins against 2 of those 5 already. Their coordinators ran circles around Nebraska last night. Their QB has 10 TDs to 0 INTs. They have two very reliable WRs and a strong defense that’s held two pretty darn good QBs in check already. There’s two truly scary games left on the schedule. 7 or 8 wins feels like a pretty decent bet.

    Yes, from what I’ve heard questions about his effort and commitment go back to his time in Tennessee.

    Is it weird? When Poles took the job, he inherited an OL that desperately needed improvement. The names he has brought in to improve OL via trade and FA: Lucas Patrick, Nate Davis, Ryan Bates, Coleman Shelton, Alex Leatherwood, Michael Schofield, Dan Feeney, and 34-y.o. Riley Reiff in the twilight of his career. Most of this list consists of depth lineman rather than starters, the exception being Nate Davis who he gave $10 million despite serious questions about his willingness to actually play football.

    I find myself mixing and matching even in the same sentence (E.g, Dansby, Nico, Belli, and Happ) and I can’t offer a rhyme or reason.

    Yeah, being a multidimensional player helps in that regard. Given the Cubs’ current roster construction (a bunch of 2-3.5 win players without a true superstar), it’s not something I want to see them do next year unless they are able to pull off that acquisition of a true middle of the order ~40-HR power bat that everyone’s been lining for.

    I wonder if this is universally recognized by front offices or if this could present opportunity for more trades for post-hype prospects, a la Michael Busch last year? In other words, will all orgs have the same level of patience for letting guys figure things out at the big league level as the Cubs did with PCA?

    Interesting. I kind of just assumed Carter and Velus getting involved in the offense was because Keenan was on the sideline.

    Xavier Scott was absurd. Good to see the D back to 2022 form so far. 8 forced turnovers already. Altmyer looked shaky, but his receivers came up big. Zakhari Franklin’s one-handed grab was incredible.
