What a dumb decision by Lee. 4 pitches for the first two batters and you can't take a pitch when you haven't played in 5 games? -
Which is what you should do. So you are confirming that you haven't heard anything about this? I would be absolutely shocked if this actually happened. Trolls start trade rumors on blogs at every trade deadline. Did anyone check whether this was the blogger's first post (or one of them)? He says it's his first post in the post.

So then doesn't this indicate to you we need a power bat in the OF? Or shall we attempt to catch the biggest HR-hitting team in the league with the likes of Matt Murton and Angel Pagan? No one is saying "we don't need an OF, we have Murton", they're saying "Murton is our best option right now, let's play him". -
I'd do that deal in a second. As would I! I think it has moore to do with the fact that I don't see much in Nady. He's just a fairly average corner outfielder (which admittedly would be an upgrade for RF) I'm with you. I don't mind doing Gallagher + Moore to get a RF that will be around past this year, but Nady's nothing too extraordinary.

although the cubs offense statistically was better before Lofton got here in 03 Probably because Corey Patterson got off to such a hot start. Lofton was a significant upgrade over Goodwin. Yeah. A lot of people attributed the Cubs making the playoffs to Lofton's presence as a true leadoff guy or whatever, which isn't true because the offense was actually better before he got there(and the pitching was the reason we did anything anyway). That doesn't mean that Lofton wasn't good as a Cub though, far far from it(.327/.381/.471 in 236 PA's).

It is when your arm is terrible. And to the other guy who compared it to Ramirez improving at third base. The difference is that Ramirez always had the tools to be a good third baseman. You can't learn to have a good arm, you either have one or you don't. Murton's a mediocre defender in left, and is going to have to find a new team if he's ever going to play again. This is the first time you've mentioned arm in your stance against Murton's defense. Like I said, there have been glowing reports of him doing well at AAA, including one play where he ran down a fly ball in foul territory then gunned down a guy at 3rd. We aren't talking about Juan Pierre type arm strength here. And again, we have to relate his ability against what we have. Floyd can barely touch his toes without pulling something anymore, and he's not about to uncork any laserbeams from the corner to gun down baserunners either. And yet, Floyd is playing right in Chicago and Murton is in Des Moines. Those reports must be glowing. So glowing that Jake Fox ended up in Chicago instead of the red headed stepchild. Fox was called up because he could play 1B, and even then,"the Cubs made the decision so it must be right" has not been a strong argument for....well, ever.

It's not as if Murton has been permanently oppressed, he performed in an extended period last year, and this year he got banished for a poor month. i'm just posing the possibility that there is more to it than "a poor month". So between last year and his demotion he developed some type of problem? -

Even if Sheets comes back and doesn't miss a beat, and if Gallardo continues to pitch this well out of the rotation, then those 2 are the 1-2 and Hill is still better than Capuano or Suppan or Bush or Vargas.

I think part of the process would be to try to sell high with Marshall during or after you've acquired the starter in order to shore up the lineup while maintaining/strengthening the rotation. For example, something like Marmol + Cedeno + lower level MiLB guy for Vazquez (with maybe some of his future contract taken care of) then use Marshall + Pie to get Teixeira, or something like that, you get the idea. Of course, our apparent inability to add significant salary would probably make any of these scenarios implausible.

I don't know why everyone understands that it's a bad idea to judge a player based on a couple at bats that they've seen, but when a player has a poor stretch defensively it seems to stick with them for life. Defense is not a static ability. There are reports that Murton has made several fantastic defensive plays since he has been at Iowa, he's not nearly the liability there some would like to consider him to be. At his level of production is it worth to deal with probable below average defense? Maybe not for the long term. Is it worth it when the alternatives are playing Cliff Floyd, who can't seem to stay healthy, hit anything but singles, or not fall down on any play in the outfield? Most definitely.

Why not just give Cedeno a shot? Lopez may bounce back, but his BABIP numbers don't give me a ton of hope, and his upside is similar to Cedeno's, so I'd rather just give Ronny the several hundred PA tryout. -
whatever your trying to do with your font, it isn't working. This has the potential to be a devastating loss if the reds can somehow pull this one out. The font looks okay to him, but for those of us without premium we see all the tags before and after.
