  1. Fortunately, it was given back to them with the bad call on the play Molina got hurt, and Chase Utley forgetting to throw. Even without getting into who has overperformed expectations more(I'm quite certain you'd find the Cards have more overachievers), the Cubs have a 7 game advantage in Pythagorean.
  2. It's almost becoming cliche to freak out about Marmol's usage every time he comes into a game. Right now he's on pace for 10-12 innings this month, a significant drop from the previous two months. The only times he's been used in back to back games, he threw 8 pitches in each of the outings, then got 2 days off. The time to panic about Marmol's workload has not been the past couple weeks. As far as the situation goes, CCP mentioned what many aren't considering. Bases loaded and no outs, there's a relatively significant chance of all 3 of those players scoring(a single between outfielders and a sac fly would do it). At that point it's a 3 run game, and you're definitely using Wood in the 9th, and it's probably leveraged enough to need/justify using Marmol to finish the 8th. Using Marmol to put out the fire means that Wood doesn't have to pitch. Now you have Wood to close out tomorrow, Eyre is probably good to go with a day off after 2 short outings, and Howry and Wuertz have long enough layoffs prior to their most recent outings to make them easily available too. It's easily defensible bullpen management, and probably the right move.
  3. Raisin, what made you pick Whitlock over Coleman for the rotation? And Craig, I'm really down on Harrison as a pick. He strikes me as a slap hitter who won't advance very well, especially since he played against pretty subpar competition. I'm not sure where you're getting Opitz's OPS from, he hit .339/.434/.568/1.002 last year, with a better walk rate and only slightly worse K rate than Harrison, while playing much better competition in the Big 12.
  4. Macias, Jones, and Sontag could all be in that OF mix soon enough. I know Calvert is just roster filler, but it's strange he didn't make the initial roster, being a senior that's already signed on a team with barely enough OFs. If they do move someone to the OF, I hope it's Harrison, I'd like to see Flaherty, Gonzalez, and Opitz get as many of the middle IF AB's as possible.
  5. Edmonds is 4 for 14 with a 2B, a HR, and TWELVE walks against Burnett.
  6. Bay is approaching free agency. With McLouth, Nady, and McCutcheon, I wonder if they would consider moving him. Which also begs the question, could Nady handle CF? Would he be worse than Edmonds/Johnson, both of whom are pretty bad?
  7. Interesting. Thanks for the early scoop on the lineup, Bruce.
  8. I'm not sure what that really means. They look like baseball players to me, at least when they wear baseball uniforms. Murton is slugging under .400 against AAA pitching. He can't play defense. He runs the bases like he's drunk. I understand that he can get on base at a decent clip, but he's nothing more than 4th OF material at this point in his career. I don't know why people are so upset he didn't get called up. Because we already had Eric Patterson on the roster, his name is Mike Fontenot. Someone who can hit LHP with power off the bench is something we don't have, and Murton could have provided it. Again, I'm trying to figure out how a guy that can't slug over 400 in the PCL can provide consistent power at the MLB level. He had a .985 OPS against LHP in Iowa this year, and he has a career OPS over .880 against them at the MLB level.
  9. It's well past noon, someone can start the new one if they like.

  11. and the Cubs front office having it out for the guy. Wuertz, Hill, Pie, Murton....quite a list they have going What has the front office said/done to make you think they have it out for Michael Wuertz? burying him in AAA a couple years back for one When did that happen? 2006 I don't think the front office has it out for Wuertz, but I don't think Lou is particularly fond of him. He seems to have a pretty quick hook with him, moreso than the rest of the non-Marmol/Wood relievers.
  12. No, it's not completely counter to the previous 400+ PA's.... I don't know all of Zambrano's stats, but I know he hit .300 one year-- he hit around .250 last year & he's hitting around .350 this year. If you want a bigger sample size, what's Zambrano's avage the last two seasons?!? Probably around .280-.290.... That's gotta be relevant. Lou is good at puting players in position to succeed. If he thought Zambrano hitting in that spot was the thing to do, there's reason for that thought. Looking at strictly batting average isn't really the best way go about it, but Zambrano is a career .234 hitter(.241 OBP) that hit .247(.247 OBP) last year and .151(.160 OBP) the year before.
  13. I doubt there's much to it. Podsednik is all kinds of awful this year, even for him.
  14. Maybe they turned their attention to DeRosa to see if he could win the game. After Soto's AB the following hitter didn't really matter. I dunno, I'm spitballing.
  15. I think Cox is a lot like other managers, with the greatest deviation being his willingness to play younger players, and play them a lot. I'm not sure how he is with handling starting pitchers though, good or bad.
  16. Career? How is that relevant?....Magic & Jabar had great careers for the Lakers, how much help would they have been tonight? For relevant, how's Zambrano's ops+ this year? With a pitcher who doesn't get very many at bats over the course of the season, it's very relevant. Zambrano has less than 50 plate appearances this year, that's not sample enough to tell anything, especially when he's got 400+ PA's of being a terible hitter prior to 2008. I don't see What Zambrano did as a hitter from 2001-2007 mattered in that at-bat yesterday-- I do see what Zambrano is doing as a hitter in 2008 mattered.... Zambrano's limited at-bats this year doesn't "tell anything"- really? If career numbers mattered more than numbers from this year, why did a lot of Cub fans think Edmonds would stink for the Cubs? A sub-50 PA sample has no predictive value, especially when it's running completely counter to the previous 400+ PA's. People didn't want Edmonds because he showed through the last 4 years(two THOUSAND PA's) that he was trending downward, and his small sample from this year was more of the same. Even outside the numbers it doesn't make sense. Carlos doesn't have a very pretty swing, he's just a very good athlete(enabling him to make contact) who swings as hard as he can every time he's up there.
  17. Even more reason to like the Celtics and Garnett in the finals. Link

  19. Having basically no power off the bench has sucked. Not saying it's needed, but the option is nice. Hoff and Ward both available for PH roles should be beast. he just seems to be rapidly declining past his usefulness. about the only thing he's done well so far this year (granted, small sample) is walk. he's not good at defense, and his power is greatly diminished His IsoP is exactly the same as it was last year. The only difference is his BABIP, which is a hilariously low .211 on a 20.0 LD%.
  20. Good night for Felix, 3 for 4. Ceda gave up a solo HR in 1 inning, he K'ed 2.
  21. Phillips clears the bases with a triple, 6-2 Reds
