    Huh? Who has been 'stuck' in the pen with no opportunities to start? The organization has shuffled some guys between starter and pen, but none have irrevocably found themselves stuck in the pen. And don't say Marmol. He isn't stuck. The organization sees his future value as closer and the only chatter about him moving back to starter has been around here. Free the rhetoric! Marmol is the poster boy. The organization seeing his value as a closer is the point, Rob isn't saying that the Cubs really want to start some people but they can't get them out of the pen. They see someone have success in the pen and fall in love with them as a reliever, ignoring that they might be just as good over more innings.

    Wade Davis though? He's only second to Price in their farm right? I saw those names and nearly choked. Relievers won't command starters that young and high. Tampa has a ton of arms, and I'm not familiar with Davis' stuff. He's putting up kinda pedestrian numbers in AA this year, and isn't young for the level. Seems like that list(save Kennedy) is like that. Guys with really solid backgrounds with some kinda blemish. Buchholz hasn't been able to stick in MLB, and Niese isn't an uberprospect(unless his stuff is off the charts, I don't know). If I were Boston or Tampa, I'd pay that price for Fuentes knowing I get two picks at the top of the draft to replace that guy, plus they have the depth to absorb losing that player.

    It's been a couple months so I don't have a clear memory, but wasn't Gallardo's route impacted by Fielder being in the way for no reason? I remember thinking "Fielder just killed Gallardo" when the play happened.

    You should be sure. Pitching another 1.2 IP is really, really stupid on Yost's part, but Gallardo was cooked even if he came out immediately(see Patterson, Corey). As for Yost's usage, I'd think he'd take note of Sabathia's post season performance after throwing 50 more innings than the previous season. He's on pace to throw more than 230 innings again. He's also run Sheets over 120 IP several times in the last couple months. EDIT: Sabathia and Sheets are 1-2 in PAP this year. Zambrano and Dempster are 7th and 10th respectively.

    I can't imagine Fuentes would come as cheap as Veal and Clevenger. Colorado seems to be asking the moon for anyone and everyone. I would go after Fuentes even if Wood's blister healed up, given Howry's struggles outside of May and Eyre's inability to stay healthy. Okay, Marshall for Fuentes. That's not too different in value from Clay Bucchholz, Wade Davis, or Jonathan Niese.

    Service time can only be accrued by time on the MLB 25 man or DL. Liriano isn't on either.

    Just because he's replacing the closer on the roster doesn't mean he needs to close for the Major League team. Marmol can do that fine.

    Id actually be a little more nervous if Ceda came up. While Ceda more logically fills the role, if they were to go out of the way to add Ceda to the 40 manand bring him up, that would suggest that whatever is bothering Wood could be more than a blister that would keep him out for just another week at most. That doesn't mean it's a sign of something more serious. Ceda's future is in the MLB pen, and since he's currently destroying AA he's an option for the MLB now or very soon, and he'll need to be added to the 40-man for that to happen.

    Len and Bob mentioned that Wood could only throw his changeup, because there's no pressure put on the blister with that pitch. In general I really don't like paying for relievers, but as long as other teams are scared off by Colorado's asking price for Fuentes, and there's some assurance he'll be Type A, I'd give up Veal and a lower level hitter for him(maybe a catcher like Clevenger or Bautista). That seems to match up with the proposed deals that other teams have balked at.

    An important difference, Ryan's teams won(KSU has no chance of even making a bowl this year), and Ryan wasn't the 8th best QB in his own conference(and that's being generous to Freeman).

    I guess it's cause he isn't on the 40-man, but I'd think Ceda makes more sense than Samardzija.

    Pina, Jackson, and (hopefully not) Hernandez might be in that mix coming from the other point of view as well.

    Collapse? They had a 1-0 lead, hardly a collapse I'm talking about the season. Well that's even worse for you then. They had an 8.5 game lead over the Brewers like 2 months ago and it's going to be gone after tonight. They had a 6 game lead over them 10 days ago (not to mention the 4 days off for the ASB) and it's going to be gone after tonight. That's a pretty big collapse, whether we end up winning the division or not. It's not a collapse at all, we're a week away from the trading deadline for crying out loud. There are 162 games in a season, playing poorly for 10 of them does not mean the season is over.

    To use a Mizzou analogy, from what I've heard Scheelhaase is a Brad Smith type(dynamic playmaker, weakness in consistent passing) while Dalton is more of a Chase Daniel(runs the spread in HS, known as a heady leader type, shorter for the position without extraordinary physical gifts). Gabbert seems to be a bit of both. I'm not surprised to hear someone say that Scheelhaase is better than Dalton, he is if he's consistent throwing the ball. Gabbert surprises me a bit though, he's the total package with physical gifts and passing ability.
