  1. It is really freaking cold in Ames. Jeremy Maclin is so fast he makes fast people look unfast.
  2. How is Illinois tied with EWU at the half when they're outshooting and outrebounding them, and only have 1 more turnover?
  3. How much do you think it would take to get Gutierrez? He didn't hit last year and they have Francisco, Sizemore, Choo, plus Dellucci under contract.
  4. I don't really know what else to call it, but basically, 3 people for 2 positions. For us, 2B and RF. Fontenot and DeRosa compose 2/3 of that, which leaves us with a need for a RH RF. That brings up a few questions, namely: What are the odds Hendry likes DeRosa's versatility and Fontenot enough to forgo the elusive "athletic, LH hitter"? What options are out there for that position? Personally, I like Franklin Gutierrez and Austin Kearns. Both are great defensively, can hit LH pitching(especially Kearns), and are on teams with an excess of outfielders. They both have enough potential that they could become something more than a role player. Gutierrez has a very low salary cost, and the Nationals would probably give away Kearns and/or take on a substantial part of his 8M 2009 salary. Any other ideas?
  5. Lidge was the clear NL leader in WPA this year.... Also, Marmol was 4th and Dempster 5th, just in front of Webb, Sabathia, and Hamels.
  6. From Cubs.com Where did you find this quote, because it's not right. Free agents can still sign with their previous team after the Thursday deadline. It's after the Thursday deadline that they lose exclusive negotiating rights. You're reading it wrong. It's saying that only the previous team can sign them before the deadline, not that the previous team can't sign them after the deadline. Really? I've read that second sentence, which appears to be cut off, several times, and it gives the appearance that the Cubs would not be able to negotiate with Dempster after Thursday. I swear I'm not hungover. It's ambiguously worded and can be interpreted either way.

  8. The scary thing is it probably doesn't. Instead of paying $10m to one great relief arm they will probably spend $12-15m on a bunch of mediocre arms. Or maybe they sign someone good like Cruz or Affeldt and are better off with the same or similar money alotted, plus possibly having 4 picks if it's Affeldt. You don't know Hendry. People keep talking about Cruz being some secret cheap option, but he's listed as the secret cheap option everywhere. If he doesn't get a big contract his agent is incompetent. There are teams much more desperate for bullpen help than the Cubs. Where did I say he'd be cheap?

  10. Why would you think that, because they happened on the same day? I don't see how you can't think Gregg is the answer to Wood being let go. Unless you're in the Padres crave a 5M mediocre closer camp. I don't see how this means "we're done with the bullpen this offseason".
  11. Do you have even a little belief that this is the last/biggest move of the offseason? Why would you think that, because they happened on the same day?
  12. I don't know for sure that Mizzou wouldn't want to move to the Big 10, but to move away from the conference that contains their biggest rival, as well as all their history with Big 8 teams. Illinois is a rival, but Iowa is just geographically close without much history. There'd be better exposure, but I'm not sure that'd be enough to convince Mizzou to make the move.
  13. I'm going to sticky this for reference, since I've needed to find it several times in the last few weeks, and I imagine it's something others are curious about as well. 14. The last two years, the difference between Wuertz and Gregg is like 3 walks over 70 IP. And Gregg has no platoon split and doesn't give up HR no matter where he pitches. Two things: 1.) Relievers aren't going to have big home away splits by virtue of only throwing 30 or so innings at home or away in a given season. It's not enough innings to get a true grasp on it. 2.) I should note that from 2005-07 Bob Howry gave up 20 home runs. From 2005-07 Kevin Gregg gave up 25 home runs. Bob Howry also pitched more innings in that time frame and pitched in a park more prone to home runs. Kevin Gregg's been average when it comes to giving up long balls. He will be below average now that he's not in Yosemite. That's an awfully convenient timeframe, removing Howry's awful 2008 and adding in Gregg's two worse HR years in the AL. Gregg has given up 3 HR in 64 IP away from Pro Player the last two years, hardly inconsequential.

  16. If we're giving people the benefit of the doubt, then here's Gregg last year through 8/14, after which he fell apart for 2 weeks and was DLed. 55 IP, .188/.297/.228/.525 against, 45/28 K/BB, 1 HR, 1.19 WHIP Obviously the walks are still an issue, but it's still stellar production. Also, his stuff as a sinkerballer has kept him from an unfavorable home/road split, and it also means that getting away from the horrific infield D in Florida should stand to help him too.
  17. Yes but not significantly enough to say it's "insane" to choose any of those guys over gregg for an inning. Plus I was going by last year's performance. It's relatively crazy to say that you'd for sure prefer 5 different guys who are inferior pitchers. It's not like Gregg gets by on Borowski-stuff either to make you prefer others in that fashion either.
  18. I just looked up Gregg's stats from the past two years, and I've confirmed that this post is completely insane which of those guys is gregg significantly better than? Cotts, Wuertz, Guzman, Samardzija, and Gaudin have been worse than Gregg the last two years.
  19. Marmol and Marshall for sure. No way I'd be sure about any of the others.
  20. Can we wait to panic about signing Gregg long term until there's any indication that something like that is going to happen? I agree with UK that we could use another reliever. Look at it this way, are we better off with Wood(long-term deal) + Ceda or Gregg + Jeremy Affeldt(shorter-than-Wood-term deal) + 2 picks this year + 2 picks next year? The main problem with this deal isn't necessarily that Gregg was the player acquired, it was that Gregg was acquired at the cost of Ceda.
  21. Thankfully Lou is nothing if not patient with guys who walk people, so he should be able to get the most out of Gregg.
  22. I traded him away in my keeper league, and in the other league I own him in, this is the first week I'm starting him since the injury. If Slaton goes crazy instead of him, I'm going to be very displeased.
  23. PMR had Hawpe as the worst defensive RF in the game last year, and it wasn't close.
  24. I love that Stetson is named the Hatters.
