Didn't the Cubs clear a spot when the Marlins claimed Jokisch yesterday? 25 man spot, not 40 man. Contreras is already on the 40 man, and even if he wasn't, that's a lot easier to manipulate with all the AAAA relievers currently on it.

I wonder if we will see Contreras come up for a few weeks once we get to about June/July to catch some games in order to keep Montero fresh? There's a stretch of 20 straight games from end of June into the first weekish of July, that wouldn't be a bad time to bring him to start maybe 5 of those games. I'm sure Contreras will be up by September, but one of the problems is one of roster spots. All the players at the bottom of the roster need to pass through waivers to be sent down(Szczur, Ramirez, Richard, etc) so you risk losing that guy for good if you do it. There are worse fates than letting Szczur go, and injuries/performance might open a more obvious spot by summer, but at the moment I'm not comfortable being certain that tradeoff will work itself out.

Surprised to see Montero in there. To be honest, I'd almost prefer he not be in there since one of his biggest risks(injury/wearing down) is magnified with Schwarber not catching 30 games.

Barring significant injury or multiple players cratering, the trade deadline can be as much about 2017 as 2016, even with higher prices. Hammel is a FA after the season and Lackey will be 38. Wood, Cahill, and Richard are FA with Strop a year behind. Getting multiple years of control of a good reliever is never not necessary, even if the rotation looks good in July.

Day game tomorrow (Ross) against Bettis(who I believe throws predominantly 4 seam FBs) make for a good spot for Soler to be thrown right back into the lineup too. Also, Did you know? La Stella's .491 wOBA would have ranked #1 of any qualified hitter in MLB last year.

For comparison, Cardinals opponents are 5-12 in games not against the Cards.
