  1. Spencer Patton now at 22 IP, 15 H, 37/9 K/BB, 0 HR
  2. Messi has played 30 minutes and he's tied for the tournament lead in goals.
  3. For perspective, the Cubs are 107-44 in the last calendar year, by losing tonight they fell below a 116 win pace in the last 12 months.
  4. Is there no downtrend that you're not willing to completely ignore? Yeah it's amazing that they've put together a 41-18 record, but that's because the SP has masked a lot of the glaring problems. I'm actually more worried about the pitching sustaining a strand rate that is higher than what we mocked the Cardinals for last year than I am the offense which has used up all of the fantastic depth they had in March. But in the grand scheme of things my biggest worries are like a 3 on a 1-10 scale. Yes they've gone like 17-12 since their 24-6 start. But 17-12 is still like 96 win pace over the course of a season. And this is a down stretch for this team relatively speaking The strand rate will go down as the temperatures go up, the Cards last year actually had a higher strand rate to this point in the season, especially compared to everyone else. However, the same increase in temperatures means more runs on the offensive side of the ledger. The Cubs also have a great defense, 20% of their rotation is incredibly good at inducing soft contact, and their FIP is #2 in baseball(#1 for SP).
  5. You are smarter than this. His last 3 appearances 1/3IP 5H 5ER 1BB 0K. Combine that with a 5.57ERA and 4.56FIP and you can't feel at all comfortable with him coming into tight games. 5 days ago he had a 3.48/3.81/3.42 ERA/FIP/xFIP, and moving beyond the small samples of this week/this year is very positive as well. So yes, unless there's some reason to think Grimm is more fundamentally broken, I'm very comfortable with Grimm in a tight game, although I also recognize as the 3rd best reliever he isn't going to be flawless(and historically he may struggle with control, like 80% of relievers).
  6. These are all things you've said in the last 90 minutes.

  8. Almora still has a pretty high floor, and if Happ continues to put his May behind him in the next few weeks I think you can make the argument for him too.
  9. Torres since May 1: 154 PA, .316/.389/.534, 6 HR, 29/16 K/BB, 10/13 SB
  10. Donaldson for Jamaica is having an all-timer in terms of missed opportunities, it seems like every 5 minutes he blows a different chance.
  11. The original Shawon has a job in the Giants organization, maybe they sold him there as a courtesy instead of releasing him. Kinda the inverse of when the Cubs traded for someone else's kid(I forget who it was now, Scoscia?) so they could be the ones to release him instead of dad's team.

  13. 2, 3, 4, 5 and 14 in the NL. Absurd. [tweet] [/tweet] EDIT: I just realized that Lackey is the team leader, which is maybe the most absurd of all considering he gave up 18 baserunners in his first 2 starts.
  14. Almost put this in the Theo thread in Baseball discussions but let's do it here: [tweet]https://twitter.com/jareddiamond/status/740691683902390273[/tweet] With Almora's debut, this means that in this decade(2010-2015): Theo has had 9 of 13 1st rounders make the majors, and 2-3 of those that haven't still have a fair shot of getting there(Happ, Johnson, maybe Blackburn) McLeod has had 6 of 10 1st rounders make the majors in that span, with the same 2-3 having a chance, and an 11th pick that wasn't signed. For a point of comparison, in the same span Neal Huntington is 2 for 9, with 5 having a chance to join them(mostly HS draftees in A ball) plus Appel going unsigned, and Mozeliak is 4 for 15, with ~7 having a chance to also make it. If you look at it by impact the math is pretty good too: Theo: 15.2 bWAR, 1.16 per pick McLeod: 14.6, 1.46 per signed pick Huntington: 9.2(all Cole), 1.02 per signed pick Mozeliak: 12.0, 0.8 per pick
  15. It's very good and clever, but Ross pretending he has someone on the other line when he gets the invalid number message makes it great.
  16. So, Peru is up 2-0 on Ecuador already. If they win then Ecuador is practically(if not mathematically) done, and Peru only needs to bunker for a tie against Brazil to win the group. As a reminder, this is the group that the USA is paired with, so if the US finishes 2nd(most likely option), they face the winner of the group in the quarters.
  17. Yeah, could Schwarber have a 6 win season? Possibly, especially if he can catch a few dozen games. More likely he's going to be in that Nelson Cruz category of big bats whose lack of speed/positional value limit his ceiling. No need to give him away by any stretch, that's plenty valuable and worth having around, but when it comes to trade value he's not on the Bryant/Russell/Rizzo tier.
  18. Arrieta threw 119 pitches in his no hitter and entered the 9th with 103 pitches. He threw 92 and 100 pitches the two starts after. Even by your own criteria that wasn't a bad decision, so why bring it up as a devil's advocate point? PS Johan Santana was 33 and had just missed a year due to injury when he threw his no hitter, and had 107 pitches entering the EIGHTH inning before ending with 134 pitches.
  19. Someone should ask him why he looked like he was on the verge of tears the entire game then.
  20. That 4th goal was big for any chances of being top of the group. That's predicated on Colombia dropping points to CR or Paraguay, but one can dream. Aside: Fox Sports Go is shockingly bad
