Seemed like the Pirates were trying to ice him a little bit. Obviously, the pitcher had no book on him to speak of, so the mound visit made sense. But then after the mound visit was two throws to first base, which would have had my anxiety level in anticipation of that first pitch even more nerve wracking. It might have been a better idea of throwing one outside of the strike zone on that first pitch, because after that long wait, Willson was clearly ready to swing the bat. And that he did. I loved Joe all but getting someone to chain Baez to 1B. Reminded me of a travel ball coach I had who would show up kids who missed a sign more than once. He wasn't above yelling "steal second on the next pitch" across the field to a baserunner on his team. I particularly liked that what got the message across was Jones doing the 'be cool' hand signal over to him.

RH hitters are 1 for 13 against Taillon and they faced LHP the first 2 games of the series, today is an obvious day to load the lineup with lefties.

The US had the better of the run of play against Ecuador until it went to 10 v 10. Then Ecuador's speed advantage was magnified and they had way more urgency to throw numbers at the goal. In the last month the US has given up 3 goals: a corner, a PK, and a run of play goal 10 v 10. I feel pretty good about their ability to prevent a blowout, even if odds aren't great that they win outright.

Castillo turns 29 in a couple weeks and owns an OPS in the .670s in both AAA and the Majors. Not a lot of optimism or upside to be had there. -

The Rangers are also 5 games above their pythag, Desmond is the only regular with a wOBA over .340, and A.J. Griffin is the only SP they have with a FIP below 4.20. That's unfairly painting them in a bad light, but they aren't going to win 100 games. -

I'm nitpicking, but a 1-2-3 of Cole/Taillon/Glasnow would not be hard to beat. In future years with more development from Taillon/Glasnow sure, but this year it'd be somewhere between 6th and 10th in the NL. That said, the Pirates aren't going to trade McCutchen. They could trade Melancon, and they might sell off a bench bat like Rodriguez or Freese that is near FA, but they don't need a cosmic shift.

8 teams in baseball are at least 10 games out of first place. Half of those are the rest of the NL Central.

2 walks, 2 HBP, been on base 4 times, and scored a run. get your head in the game, Rizzo. I don't care if he's early 2000s Barry Bonds. That was an absent minded play from Rizzo. Not sure if you have the TV broadcast, but Len made the point that Rizzo may have been intentionally doing that so he could be as fast as possible to the 2nd base bag and have the run count. My first guess was he put his head down too early(thinking the ball got past Mercer or that Mercer was going to 1B), but in watching the replays I can see the case for it.

well Harrison's glove probably didn't touch him until well after Rizzo started trucking him, but that's probably a dubious interference call. It's not like Rizzo is obligated to get out of his way.
