  1. 10 minutes in and the gamesmanship is already beyond tedious.
  2. His career was over like 4 years ago, just no one told him. I should clarify, it's kinda weird that he'll play mostly every day for the final 3 years of his contract and then the moment it's over be basically out of baseball. Doesn't happen very often for sure.
  3. it's got to be a little weird for Howard to know that his career is pretty much over after this year
  4. http://www.foxsports.com/mlb/story/los-angeles-dodgers-outfielder-new-york-mets-complaint-defense-laser-markers-ken-rosenthal-052816 Boy the Dodgers have about the least likable approach to analytics you can imagine. Let us mark these outfield spots ahead of time or we'll dig up the field to do it anyway, are they serious
  5. The Cardinals are bumslayers. 8-16 w/ -26 RD against >.500 teams, compared to 7-6 and -5 for the Pirates. Duke's point about quality of schedule is definitely illustrated here though, yesterday was the first time the Pirates have played a >.500 team outside the division.
  6. It is very important that you report back with Eloy's walk up song.
  7. Cubs also have 5 of the top 21 pitchers in fWAR. Related note, I was comparing fWAR to bWAR and saw Hendricks was 71st in bWAR. Can someone explain to me why Chad Bettis (4.90 ERA, 1.30 WHIP) has a higher bWAR than Hendricks (3.30 ERA, 1.06 WHIP). I know Hendricks has thrown 25% fewer innings (46 1/3 vs. 60 2/3) but that can't be all of it. I thought bWAR was based more off runs allowed rather than the peripherals and just thought it was odd. Park adjustments?
  8. I dunno, I kinda want them to keep going so by the end of next week they have the 2nd best record and baseball and are still 5 games back. Imagine the players their fans will want to throw at.

  10. Yes, 3-0 zones are statistically larger than average, and 0-2 zones are statistically smaller. There's an argument to be made for making the players decide at bats instead of umpires, but at the major league level where the players are so good and the stakes so high, I don't really think it should be as significant as it is.
  11. That might have been the most spiteful K I've ever seen from an umpire.
  12. there was probably an instant where he was off the bag with the tag applied, but I didn't see a camera angle that showed both Bryant definitively off the base and Hernandez tagging him
  13. Ron Santo used to do the same, (or there was some guest announcer that did for 1 inning while Pat went on break?) and they just continued the tradition "tradition" I'm pretty sure Hughes has the 5th inning off contractually, the problem is not having an actual PBP person do it like they have in the past, where someone like the updates guy is an aspiring PBP guy(for the life of me I can't remember any of the names) and does it.
  14. Last year followed a similar cadence, one of the reasons the offense didn't really click until July(aside from Schwarber) was that Wrigley played huge until later in the year than normal. Last year's Cubs averaged 3.2 runs per game at home in April/May/June and 4.7 runs per game in July/August/September. Considering that this year's Cubs are currently averaging 5.2 runs per game at home(6.1 on the road), that bodes very poorly for opposing pitchers.
  15. He did have cosmetic surgery on his eye so he could open it wider, I believe, but the overwhelming reason his workfload has been so light has been an abundance of caution from the Dodgers. BBRef doesn't have pitch counts for all his games, but in those they do have he's never cracked 90 pitches, and his high this year is 82.
  16. I'm tapping out a lot earlier than that listed package for a reliever, even one as good as Betances. Ken Giles is a fairly recent reminder of the line all of them walk, and gutting the top of the farm system for one(especially in our current state where the back end of the pen is quite good) isn't worth it for me.
  17. Why would the Padres trade Pomeranz?
  18. Yes but they easily could have gotten him in the Garza deal the week before and probably were more familiar with him due to scouting the system for Garza-specific purposes. Also that was a very serious post.
  19. COUNTERPOINT Archer: 10.6 fWAR in 103 starts, currently leaking command on the path to arm surgery like a junker car leaks oil Hendricks: 6.1 fWAR in 53 starts, only looks like a ventriloquist doll from *some* angles
  20. Isn't Kellyn Acosta in that mix too? He just got called in as a defender, right?
