  1. oh man that was a very fun 30 seconds the hit, Almora's reaction, Rizzo and Bryant going nuts, awesome
  2. It is definitely a pointless extension of Gonzalez.
  3. I was mildly amused that they treated Schwarber's injury a bit like he lost a limb. "Well obviously I'd take Schwarber, but with the injury we kinda have to take Michael Conforto and his .304 OBP instead. RIP, Kyle"
  4. I can't believe I forgot about Mister T and his Tall Teeth. What a great post.
  5. The Cubs BABIP is a concern in their quest to win 115 games, it is not a concern as it relates to the actual strength of the team or postseason success.
  6. I think it's the Cahill plan, just with the added step of some AAA starts. Keep him stretched out enough that future starting isn't ruled out, have him as a multi-inning RP option late in the season, bring him back in free agency(or arbitration if he's down long enough) as rotation depth, and have him settle as a multi-inning reliever after he inevitably fails to make the rotation. How many of these do we need though? the Cubs need someone to come in in the 6th or 7th and get Bryce Harper or Matt Adams or David Ortiz out. I think matusz can still be that guy. When you have more than one then those two roles aren't mutually exclusive. Much like Wood last year, you can use him to eat innings when needed, and you can use him to erase left handed hitters in close games.
  7. I wonder if they're doing that in an effort to help him find his proper mechanics again. Or if that was the hook they used to get him to sign with us. Or if they seriously think they can Arrieta him.
  8. In his last 8 innings Shields has allowed 6 home runs. That's more than Arrieta's allowed in his last 234 regular season innings.
  9. Just to give a somewhat mathematical starting point, Miller has been about a 2 win reliever for a couple years now, which puts him consistently among the Top 10 relievers. Let's say that he gets a 50% bump on that value because of the high leverage of relief(generous) and also say that he'll stay at that threshold through the rest of his contract and not decline(unlikely). That means for the 2.5 years you have Miller he's giving you 50ish million in value and being paid about 23 million. That surplus value is below Contreras in trade value, never mind silliness like Schwarber or Baez. The Yankees(being who they are)might need greater value to deal him, and prices are higher at the deadline, which is fine. That doesn't mean that the Cubs should be remotely interested in that deal though, especially since they have 2 very good high leverage relievers already.
  10. The left center back completely whiffing on the tackle the way he did is crazy, the soccer version of being posterized.
  11. As of now, I'm just happy that it looks very likely that one of the Mets, Cardinals, or Dodgers will miss the playoffs entirely, and at the moment the two that make it only get the wild card. I'd prefer the Pirates come back and take one of those WC spots though.
  12. Going from watching Copa matches to watching Italy bunker for 70+ minutes is like watching a different sport.
  13. Russell is in a slump, so all the macro comparisons are going to be less friendly. At the start of the month(less than 2 weeks ago) he had the same wOBA he had last year, so I'm hesitant to be too disappointed, especially since he was much better in the 2nd half/warmer weather last year. If that continues then he'll likely end up with a small step forward offensively, not the leap that was hoped but not limiting to his future ceiling either.
  14. To quote that PSD thread from page 1: Imagine being so frustrated by the 2016 Cubs that you need to stop watching. It's only the best Cubs team you've ever seen and a good chance it's the best one you'll ever see.
  15. what is happening
  16. Yes, they are mathematically locked at 2nd in the group. Brazil/Peru has similar stakes as USA/Paraguay, Peru wins the group with a win, Brazil wins the group with a win or tie.
  17. Ecuador getting a 3rd goal pretty much guarantees them 2nd in the group and a trip to Seattle, because Haiti getting 2 in the last 30ish minutes is a looong shot.
  18. Remember in the spring that people were wondering if A.J. Reed was going to make the Astros out of spring training? At the least people figured that he'd be ready and waiting if the other options floundered. As it turns out, AAA is harder than the California and Texas league, and Reed is hitting .244/.348/.471/.819, and at Fresno. I point that out to make a comparison to Vogelbach, who didnt' have the A+/AA outbreak that Reed did, is now hitting .314/.431/.536/.987 in the same AAA league. His bounceback year is probably the most underreported positive development in the system.
  19. he wasn't wrong, though. coghlan scored on an E9 Yep, Jones was right but when Markakis inexplicably tried to barehand and kicked it, going home was the right choice(and still a wee bit close a play).
  20. that is probably the best bunt Lester will place in his career
  21. oh man now I have to decide on whether to get tickets for thursday and then second guess that decision each day until then
  22. That happened to an assistant in one of the other games, but I can't remember who. Hilarious. Less hilarious, how terrible Fox Sports Go continues to be.
