  1. 2015 Jake is not here, not even first half. Unless his slider and/or command improve, that Jake is not coming back. 2016 Jake is plenty good, but he's also going to be prone to having days where things don't go like they should. For a point of comparison, 2015 Lester gave up 4+ runs in 8 different starts and was still a 5 win pitcher. They struggle in different ways, but in terms of putting their quality/mortality into place, it's a helpful analogy.
  2. The most obnoxious thing about the strike calls is that they are made even more ridiculous by handedness. The K calls to Zobrist and Bryant were from LHP so they never had a piece of the plate. Cervelli's multiple pitches both were in the zone for the entire flight of the ball, you don't even need framing or to be fooled to call it a strike.
  3. There's only so many options too. Edwards still isn't going back to back games, Grimm and Chapman are the only other late inning options. Pena is bad until proven otherwise in low leverage, Cahill has thrown the previous 2 days, and Zastryzny isn't really any better an option to finish that inning.
  4. Harrison ups his wOBA to .292 with that double, and should cross 1.0 fWAR at the 470 PA mark
  5. Willson I will paypal you a million dollars if you backhand flip the ball to the mound on strike 3
  6. getting very excited about the prospect of Harrison striking out to end this inning
  7. well at least he's had a narrow zone the whole night and didn't ring up Zobrist on a pitch a foot outside
  8. Despite that laundry list of stuff the Pirates were 90% more tolerable when Cervelli had gangrene or whatever the injury was
  9. today's 7th inning chant is movie listings for the night of the wild card game
  10. Josh Harrison interrupts his multi-year heist of millions of dollars from the Pirates to make a nice catch yes I'm salty about that celebration
  11. Assuming that's a reviewable play(I have no idea), then yes they'd be able to do that. We've seen a similar process happen where a runner is called safe at the plate, challenged and then reversed to out, and then challenged by the hitting team to check the plate blocking rule.
  12. So that challenge was either Hurdle not having any idea what the rule is, or Hurdle hoping that the people paid to review plays have no idea what the rule is.
  13. I haven't seen a great angle but I'm reasonably certain that Marte was out on Contreras' tag
  14. he's made of rubber so I don't think that's possible
  15. Are they calling up Bell only for Cubs series? How does he only have 33 PA?
  16. You can't spell 'Amateur Apiarist' without 'A Pirate's trauma', so maybe you're on to something.
  17. Against RHP Heyward and Schwarber are going to be in the lineup already, Blanco is a hedge against Almora(probable), Baez(possible to probable), or Soler(possible if he's still around) not being very good against RHP. He also gives you a hedge against Heyward not being as good as hoped in CF or Almora proving not to be worthy of MLB at bats at all.
  18. Did Baez slip? I thought he'd be 2 steps further.
  19. a lifetime of instinct the play and runner were in front of him he could see gonzalez wasn't even a third of the way down the line when he picked up the ball. you're taught to go with the ball, once he played it off that hop the instinct is to go to 2nd instead of taking several steps to re-orient to go to 1st. It wasn't the right decision, but it shouldn't be a super surprising mistake. After all Zobrist was in RF and Baez had to slow the throw to wait for him and Seager might have still been out.
  20. ooh did he clip the front of the base, if not he is 100% out
  21. to walk Seager? To bring in Edwards. Cahill getting a ground ball (or any kind of non-run-scoring out) is much more likely than Edwards not walking somebody in this spot, IMO. lol you are so convinced that Edwards is a walk-monster
