Yeah, with Tomlin on the mound and a crazy wind, it's an easy compromise to let Soler play RF and leave Schwarber as a pinch hitter. The conversation for Game 4 is much more interesting, I don't think I have a strong opinion on what the best option would be. -
Beware Roberto Perez. Napoli. Ramirez. Santana. Lindor. I mean, not to be a dick or anything Lindor had 15 HR in just under 700 plate appearances. If that's the standard for home run hitters, then the Cubs will have 8 of them in the lineup tomorrow. The Cubs had more HR and a better IsoP despite not having a DH and playing in a much worse park for HR(Wrigley 24th for HR, Jacobs Field 5th). Their 2 best power hitters play 1B and DH, so one might not even get to start unless they want to abandon defense worse than starting Schwarber and put Napoli/Santana in LF. I can respect the desire for as few variables as possible given that the Cubs have an advantage straight up, but as far as variables go, this is one that we can be the most comfortable with. The Cubs are better at hitting home runs, their starter is great at preventing home runs, and the Indians starter is one of the worst in baseball at preventing home runs. Advantage Cubs.

Arrieta's stuff is by far the hardest to handle on the staff, and Montero has done the best job of receiving that stuff. I haven't checked recently, but IIRC every strong outing Jake has had in the 2nd half has been with Montero catching. It's not a guarantee, Jake still has the most influence, but Montero is going to do a much better job of stealing strikes and knowing his stuff best for how to attack hitters. As far as the running game goes, that's definitely something to keep an eye on, but I don't think it's reason to avoid Montero's game calling benefits. Here's Arrieta's recent starts: NLCS/Montero: Reddick stole 2nd and 3rd NLDS/Montero: No attempts Pittsburgh/Montero: No attempts St. Louis/Montero: No attempts, Montero picked Adams off Milwaukee/Contreras: Villar steals 2nd twice Houston/Ross: No attempts San Fran/Contreras: Crawford stole 2nd and 3rd Pittsburgh/Contreras: 2 of 3 SB successful San Diego/Contreras: Jankowski steals 3rd Milwaukee/Contreras: Perez steals 2nd Not only does there not seem to be a huge uptick in attempts, but Contreras doesn't seem to have much of an impact either way.

Contreras can play in the outfield, and against a RH starter there isn't much difference between Montero and Coghlan when you consider the defensive alignment needed for either to play. So do you think there's no real difference between Coghlan and Contreras in the outfield? I know tonight it didn't end up mattering at all (from what I can remember). Genuinely asking, not necessarily trying to dispute. And I guess long term picture, since you said 2017, when Schwarber comes back how would you want to play it? I'm a longtime skeptic of Coghlan's defensive abilities, so given Contreras' arm and footspeed I'd probably prefer he be out there from a defensive standpoint alone. As far as 2017 goes, this is subject to change, but I imagine Montero will catch most Arrieta starts and also be used against RH starters when rest needs it(e.g. night/day combos), Contreras will get the bulk of the remaining starts, and Schwarber will catch 10 games at the most(he'll be a mainstay in LF).

Sometime in 2017, if then. Does that mean you prefer Montero tomorrow over Contreras? It's not like Willson is some terrible defensive/framing catcher. I mean, if he can catch for Hendricks, why not Jake? Anyway, that's about as good as a 6-0 loss can go. Miller threw a ton of pitches, the Indians scored on a fluke BABIP inning and 2 home runs from Roberto Perez, who took time off from his home on the spaceship from Wall-E to play in the World Series. Even if they don't win tomorrow it's not the end of the world, but do what you've done the whole postseason and tee off on any pitchers that aren't Top 5 relievers or Cy Young contenders.

I can't tell if I love that Joe spins through similar relievers so quickly so they're all fresh later, or if I hate that he didn't just let Strop finish the job this inning.

It'll be interesting to see if Miller comes out for the 8th. He already threw 21 pitches in the 7th, and while Shaw and Allen are pretty good, they aren't Miller either.

That wasn't a strike. Ask the guy who watched it on gameday Bring on robot umps, until they tell me something I don't like. Then I'll trust my eyes, just like the umpires I hate. Listen if you want me to make a gif illustrating that the Gameday zone isn't accurate today, we can make that happen. Yes, the Cubs deficit is more about Kluber than the umpiring, but that's what makes the poor calls especially exasperating, because he didn't need them. You're making a fool of yourself.

Issue: Lester gets borderline (very close) call Kluber gets call 4 inches outside to whiff Bryant Same? http://i64.photobucket.com/albums/h184/soccer10k/Bryant.png Which one was called 4 inches outside? Strikes 2 and 5 were both swung at. Again, the overhead camera angle, which isn't going to have the bias of a CF view, showed strike 3 to Bryant never came within 3 inches of the plate. You're dealing with a measurement error.

Seeing what Lester did to Napoli when the zone was called correctly doesn't make me happier that he got jobbed with 2 outs before both runs scored in the first.

Fox's overhead cam has caught at least 3 Kluber pitches being called strikes when they never touch the plate, and they're only showing that on decisive pitches of an at bat.

Bryant swinging at sliders biting out of the zone after being rung up on a pitch 4 inches outside is not an accident. Also a fraction of the 2 seamers to lefties are actually getting back to the zone, I'd like to invite Larry Vanover to retire at his earliest convenience.
