also, I just re-watched the Soler triple, and he hesitates for like a split second before booking it out of the box, he didn't cost himself a bunch of steps, and that reaction is instinctual to the flight of the ball too. But just in case we think it really does matter, a quick point of comparison. Using the broadcast, From the time the ball hits the bat to the time Kipnis receives the relay throw just into the RF grass was 13 seconds. For comparison, here's Tyler Naquin(an unequivocally faster runner than Soler) hitting an inside the park HR where he slides across at 16 seconds: http://m.mlb.com/video/topic/6479266/v1070372483/torcle-naquin-hits-insidethepark-walkoff-homer That means that even if we assume that Soler with 'hustle' is as fast as someone faster than him, that Kipnis has 3 seconds to get the ball to the plate. For comparison, for Soler to be safe in those circumstances would be like him beating the throw to 1B on a line drive to short that the SS drops right in front of him. Again, 0 percent chance of that happening.

Assuming Heyward was standing in the exact same place Soler was when the ball was hit, sure. [tweet] [/tweet] And with a huge wind and Davis on first with 1 out, Heyward sure wasn't going to be playing more shallow than usual. 0.0% chance Soler or any other RF makes that catch, and 0.0% chance that Soler scores on his triple if he books it out of the box. He should run hard either way, it's the world series and you're a part time player, there isn't a tomorrow to keep yourself healthy for. But it didn't hurt the Cubs yesterday, and Soler had another hit to boot on a night where the Cubs had 5 total. I fully expect him to not be in the lineup today against Kluber.

I appreciate that thought but Cleveland had 11 baserunners in the game. Maybe ding them for being unable to plate more runs but I think they overall hit well and chased a really good pitcher who I thought has a good game plan against them out before 5 innings. The Dodgers in game 2 did look rather bad at the plate overall. No extra base hits and half their singles were seeing-eye or bloopers. One run was a very deserved result.

One more thing before I drown my sorrows in calories, this is the same thing that happened in the NLCS, the Cubs dropped a home game and people were sad and didn't notice that the opposing team wasn't hitting at all. Throwing on 3 days rest(and then again after that, but let's cross that bridge if necessary) is not going to be the same guy, get Kluber for a couple runs and bring things back to equilibrium.

He's not leaving stuff over the plate, and the Cubs aren't punishing any early strikes. The two baserunners part is on the Cubs, but he's deservedly shut them out thus far. Keyword is thus far, it'll take very little time for him to drop a couple runs if he isn't careful.

both position players hit the ball sharply, I bet the 2nd time thru the order gets them a couple runs. Would've been real nice to cash in Zobrist or otherwise scratch across a run the first trip though, if Tomlin is going 4+ IP there's a decent sized difference between 2 and 3 runs.

Smoltz shocked that a schedule that matches the Cubs and Indians once every 3 years would prevent players from those teams from facing each other.
