I wish we had better plate discipline metrics for MiLB, I feel like he and Javy are perfect illustrations of the the pro and con arguments for 'can plate discipline/pitch recognition be taught/developed?'

Arrieta's velocity and Hendricks' results ticking up takes a big chunk of any worry I had away. I'm mildly worried that Lackey might be toast and that Anderson isn't quite good, but those are much more tolerable problems. The bullpen has exceeded expectations. On the offensive side, Almora and Jay have been much better than expected, Almora's peripherals in particular are really encouraging. Montero with a hot start is nice too. Baez has been disappointing, but he's had crummy months before(in 2016 alone he had a .243 wOBA in May and .252 in August), so that's part of the price you pay for the hot streaks. It'll be tricky to decide how much rope to give him with Almora/Jay hitting so well though.

In a mathematic sense a tie isn't possible, and Uehara having a more direct step to the base even visually gives the impression of beating Hernandez to the base, but the umpire is trained by experience to be looking for a guy to potentially be safe if a pitcher has to take that many steps after catching the flip. In any case, it shouldn't have mattered because Rizzo got lazy feet in multiple ways on that play. -

As an aside, I love that Joe basically alternates days with Koji/Rondon as the setup men one day, and Edwards/Strop the next. The end result is that out of the top 5 relievers(Davis, Rondon, Strop, Edwards, Uehara), there was only one instance of one of them throwing on consecutive days, and that was Davis getting 2 saves in a row prior to an off day.

This Cubs group has had disproportionate success against Kimbrel, also it's a 1 run game so literally any pitcher shouldn't be seen as an insurmountable obstacle.

Bryant started the year 1 for 17, now he's got a .392 wOBA at the end of the month and it didn't even feel like he got hot. He is so, so, so good.
