    Alright, let's get weird then. Happ and non-MLB stuff for Realmuto Contreras and Chatwood for an elite reliever of preferably low cost(Diaz would've been perfect here, maybe LeClerc) Sign Harper I'm not sure if that adds up dollar wise, but it's a decent framework to start from.

    I'll stop here because again, I don't want Russell back, and I don't care if they get anything for him or not. Even so, I had zero doubt that they would tender him so I'm surprised that so many appear to be shocked/angered by that outcome. I think there's a reasonable argument to be made they need to tender him regardless of their intentions, but even if not it's more than fair to think it doesn't matter because they wouldn't have non-tendered him even in a zero-risk situation. More broadly, similar to Badger this is a frustrating situation because there isn't a great and just outcome. If banishing Russell to be a full-time Pokemon trainer would help with future DV in his life or others, then it'd be easy. But it doesn't so I'm caught between feeling like the only outcome is an unproductive exacting of a pound of flesh, and also being okay with never seeing him again because no fans need to have a conflict of cheering him on knowing his past actions.

    Being similar in how a grievance would be allowed is not the same as the likelihood of success. Russell is still subject to arbitration in future years with his new team, and the negative signal of being cut by a team that would have kept him without the DV is pretty straight forward.

    I'm saying there is no grievance. He wasn't under contract. Non-tendering makes him a free agent. Anybody else can sign him, end of story. From a mechanical standpoint, non-tendering is the same as releasing him. I don't buy that non-tendering him is some sort of non-action that is immune from CBA complaints, it's the same argument of bad faith inaction that's not explicitly against the rules that led to Bryant's grievance(non-tendering Russell, not promoting Bryant).

    If you want to defend the baseball side of the decision, sure. But claiming that non-tendering an arb eligible player who had accepted a punishment would somehow create blowback that the player was being mistreated is laughable. Are you saying Russell/Boras would lose a grievance? I completely disagree, with the obvious IANAL caveat. It'd be a slam dunk that it was punitive for the DV and above and beyond the collectively bargained punishment he accepted. Just to be 100% clear since there's a lot of reflexive reactions to this, there are zero circumstances in which I want Russell on the 2019 roster. I also understand that until they actually trade him they're in a difficult spot because of the CBA, whether they truly want to act on it or not. Given their history I don't begrudge people for thinking they're giving lip service to Russell's treatment, but you can also make the argument that it shows at least some sensitivity to the situation and if the details are true, are as much as you could hope to see in terms of actually trying to get Russell help. Especially since there are no obvious or perfect solutions on how teams and leagues should act to actually deter future domestic violence.

    Did people really think they were going to non-tender him? Even setting aside the argument about whether it's the right thing to maximize Russell as an asset, non-tendering him(not a defensible baseball decision) after he's agreed to his punishment that was collectively bargained would basically be begging for a grievance and for Boras(who if you want to get real cynical, also represents other...players of interest this offseason) to spend the winter shrieking at them in the media about it.

    1.2 was MLBTR's estimate, so savings of 600k or so. I'll be interested to see if La Stella keeps playing or not. He claims he was thisclose to retiring during his gap month after getting demoted 2 years ago, and said he would have were it not for the people in this particular org.

    I could look very stupid later, but I feel like 'we're waiting for Arenado' is such an obvious honeypot that the front office isn't serious that I'm kinda surprised people have published it even as a rumor. Say what you will about their spending for 2019(not pursuing Harper and not being cheap are both quite possible, if a very bad idea IMO), but the Arenado bit is just so absurd on its face.

    Ditto. I'm maybe most excited that soccer twitter can take a momentary pause from shrieking about every coach that didn't get interviewed, on the grounds that they know they're a good candidate without having interviewed them.

    I follow the minor leagues reasonably closely, and even went to an Iowa game last year where they gave out baseball cards of the whole roster, and I have never heard Kyle Ryan's name before today.

    Roster Resource says he has one option left. That seems right from scanning his career but I never feel confident about this. Arizona Phil will be able to confirm soon enough.

    My memory of Torreyes was that his best quality was his hit tool and that he was limited to 2B defensively, now Fangraphs is telling me he's been above average in limited time at 2B, SS, and 3B in MLB, while the hit tool is basically all that works in MLB(this part isn't surprising). Fine by me to have the backup SS be a high contact guy if that's what it is, now get Russell off the roster.

    That's fair, and I agree that he has easily the most potential. In a perfect world for his development it'd have been nice if he was moving back to Europe for a team that wanted him as opposed to Man City hoovering up assets where he might get stuck in loan hell(especially as a keeper where playing time is pass/fail), but hopefully he can make it work in La Liga(I saw Girona's name floated) or wherever so his time there is more fruitful than his time in Freiburg.

    This might be a silly question, but what is Dietrich good at? He’s a minus defender everywhere, he doesn’t hit for average, and while he has some pop in his bat he’s not likely to exceed a .330 wOBA, plus he’s about to turn 30 so it’s not gonna get better. I’d rather bet on La Stella bouncing back if choosing between them.

    I like Steffen a lot, but it’s weird that this move comes after a season where he was wholly unremarkable in MLS. By one measure there were over 30 keepers better, and he definitely wasn’t in the top 5 this year.
