  1. Did people really think they were going to non-tender him? Even setting aside the argument about whether it's the right thing to maximize Russell as an asset, non-tendering him(not a defensible baseball decision) after he's agreed to his punishment that was collectively bargained would basically be begging for a grievance and for Boras(who if you want to get real cynical, also represents other...players of interest this offseason) to spend the winter shrieking at them in the media about it.
  2. 1.2 was MLBTR's estimate, so savings of 600k or so. I'll be interested to see if La Stella keeps playing or not. He claims he was thisclose to retiring during his gap month after getting demoted 2 years ago, and said he would have were it not for the people in this particular org.
  3. Updated for TLS trade.
  4. I could look very stupid later, but I feel like 'we're waiting for Arenado' is such an obvious honeypot that the front office isn't serious that I'm kinda surprised people have published it even as a rumor. Say what you will about their spending for 2019(not pursuing Harper and not being cheap are both quite possible, if a very bad idea IMO), but the Arenado bit is just so absurd on its face.
  5. Ditto. I'm maybe most excited that soccer twitter can take a momentary pause from shrieking about every coach that didn't get interviewed, on the grounds that they know they're a good candidate without having interviewed them.
  6. I follow the minor leagues reasonably closely, and even went to an Iowa game last year where they gave out baseball cards of the whole roster, and I have never heard Kyle Ryan's name before today.
  7. Roster Resource says he has one option left. That seems right from scanning his career but I never feel confident about this. Arizona Phil will be able to confirm soon enough.
  8. My memory of Torreyes was that his best quality was his hit tool and that he was limited to 2B defensively, now Fangraphs is telling me he's been above average in limited time at 2B, SS, and 3B in MLB, while the hit tool is basically all that works in MLB(this part isn't surprising). Fine by me to have the backup SS be a high contact guy if that's what it is, now get Russell off the roster.
  9. That's fair, and I agree that he has easily the most potential. In a perfect world for his development it'd have been nice if he was moving back to Europe for a team that wanted him as opposed to Man City hoovering up assets where he might get stuck in loan hell(especially as a keeper where playing time is pass/fail), but hopefully he can make it work in La Liga(I saw Girona's name floated) or wherever so his time there is more fruitful than his time in Freiburg.
  10. LaStella bouncing back to what, exactly? He had a .350 wOBA the previous two years/300+ PA
  11. This might be a silly question, but what is Dietrich good at? He’s a minus defender everywhere, he doesn’t hit for average, and while he has some pop in his bat he’s not likely to exceed a .330 wOBA, plus he’s about to turn 30 so it’s not gonna get better. I’d rather bet on La Stella bouncing back if choosing between them.
  12. I like Steffen a lot, but it’s weird that this move comes after a season where he was wholly unremarkable in MLS. By one measure there were over 30 keepers better, and he definitely wasn’t in the top 5 this year.
  13. *does shot of koolaid* Getting arms like Wick and to a lesser extent Clarkin is the type of thing you might do if you’re filling Chavez’s spot for cheap to use money elsewhere.
  14. You mean Reinheimer? like he said, Runamoker
  15. Even in a friendly against a US B team where they have like 75% possession, Italy can't help but spend the entire game gooning it up with cynical gamesmanship
  16. Seems like a situation where you tell the guy 'you're a reliever now, you throw only two pitches, go get it' to see if that unlocks the potential.
  17. [tweet] [/tweet] Wick seems like he has big velocity but more control concerns than Brewer.
  18. The Indians also have similar concerns as the White Sox do as to how much the bottom can fall out of attendance(they won 90+ games and were 21st in attendance, outdrawn by the likes of Minnesota and San Diego), that might inform how they would want a trade return to look like.
  19. Save it for the semantics dome, E.B. White
  20. I haven't read a lot of the specifics, but it sounds like the big lever is that they're trying to better negotiate in-market streaming and similar stuff with RSNs across the league, and that probably has a far bigger impact on the TV deal.
  21. Setting aside everything else, Mexico City is 2000 feet higher in elevation than Denver. It would barely be the same sport.
  22. If the Mariners are tearing it down, why would they trade for an arb eligible headliner in Schwarber? Especially for Diaz, who would garner tons of interest and Seattle could define the shape of the return.
  23. 3 years from now you're talking about essentially a different franchise. Bryant, Baez, Rizzo, Lester, Zobrist, Hendricks, Schwarber, Montgomery, Quintana, the whole bullpen sans Edwards, all at free agency. If anything Harper extends your window of competitiveness by having a star caliber player to build around instead of completely starting from scratch and spending your money on worse players than Harper anyway. Great. Sounds like we'd be the Angels, just not quite as good. If we use this logic then without Harper they're what, the Orioles?
