Machado to be a Father (10/$300m)

I guess, the IsoPs he tends to run are more borderline top 5 for a 3B. I admit a certain irrationality to my thoughts here too, but Machado feels like one of those guys who is capable of everything and has demonstrated it all in short bursts or in various years, but I don't think there's ever a version of him that is everything he could be(and is played up to be in a productivity sense). The best example of that is his defense taking a statistical nosedive when he filled out and actually started hitting for those power numbers. He's averaging ~5 WAR a season through his career, and unlike Harper he's doing it it without a lot of variability. What more do you want from the guy? The game is frikkin' hard. I don't think he's the other-worldly defender that he was early in his career and I don't think he's going to be a .370 wOBA guy consistently. I wouldn't be at all surprised if he doesn't clear 4 WAR more than once going forward, if at all. I also get the argument for Machado, I don't pretend I'm going to concretely convince everyone of my position. -

I'm having a hard time articulating this well, but good for San Diego dropping cash, good for Machado getting paid, and boy do I still not believe in Machado as a star player going forward. The Padres can use all the help they can get so I don't want to make it a 'they'll rue the day' conversation, but there's still not one aspect of Machado's game I can look at and think 'ah yes, that's what he's elite at'. -
this guy pitched in games for the cubs last year? i have never heard this name Only a couple, and the results didn't match the stuff, but yeah. I think around AA or so he found another level as a reliever and has been pushing triple digits with the fastball. Across AA & AAA last year: 50.1 IP, 2.50 ERA, 36 H, 57/24 K/BB, 3 HR If you want a 'Cubs prospect becomes a late inning fixture this year' story, it's probably Norwood throwing some more strikes.

I didn’t realize the extent of it until i saw multiple references recently, but really it’s up to Boras. Harper, Machado, Keuchel, Moustakas(until today), Marwin Gonzalez, all of the notable remaining FA outside of Kimbrel(and relievers have their own market weirdness outside of collusion) are Boras clients.

Personally, that's not true. horsefeathers, it would an insanely refreshing miracle if an abuser was actually upfront about what he did wrong and actually was sorry and wanted to be/do better and what he was actually doing/has done to be better. Not that it would absolve him, but holy horsefeathers, it WOULD make at least a bit of a difference. Dude, however, isn't even gonna sniff that, as per usual with these dudes. Would you have changed course on wanting him on the team? If so what would that have looked like? What you're describing would be better no doubt, but it's hard for me to imagine even a completely transparent and honest and truly rehabilitating Russell giving an answer that would cross that line for me. Especially given how much of the damage he inflicted was in manipulating his partners, the harm/apology/harm cycle, etc.

It seems like a situation where easily impressed people are going to be impressed by him actually discussing the topic with even 1% depth, and folks who don't want him on the team are never going to hear any words from him that will change their minds. So I guess kudos to Russell for not going full Chapman's first interview about it, but 'not actively making things worse' isn't improving the situation.

The number of very good pitchers who hit arbitration and don't end up making 40+ million is...substantial. Pitching is fleeting, take the money.

Wouldn't the Cubs have to forfeit their 1st round draft pick to sign Kimbrel since I believe the Red Sox gave him a qualifying offer? Regardless, it's all a mute point b/c Ricketts won't let Theo spend any money anyways. No, there aren't any outcomes where a QO player causes a team to lose their first round pick any more. Because the Cubs were under the LT threshold last year, they would lose their 2nd highest pick and 500k of IFA money. If they had been over the LT last year, it would have been 2nd and 5th highest picks and 1 million of IFA money.

I believe in Theo's sincerity and also think he's taking the easy way out. You can revamp the org's approach to preventing DV and dealing with those situations, but that's the relatively easy part. It's retreating into improving process while the bigger statement is to be made by actually acknowledging fans who are most hurt and conflicted by Russell's presence on the roster.

Based on how this winter has gone it's probably more like Darvish has late stage leprosy and they're scrambling on a containment plan It's actually a lot of detail basically guaranteeing that Russell is going to be a Cub this year, so worse.

Agreed, with as quickly as he's acclimated at Leipzig it feels like him being at least a strong 6 in a Champions League team is a near certainty. If he can pick up a taste for line splitting passes(probably at his next stop since he won't get that chance with Leipzig's style), watch out.

Now is probably not the right time to trot this out, but one of my hottest US soccer takes is that Carleton is/will be Harry Shipp with a ponytail. It'd be real nice for the national team if that were wrong though. Still tough to see a path for Carleton to get too many minutes either way, with Pity and Barco in front of him and the 3-4-3 that de Boer wants to play doesn't do him favors either.

Wikipedia sources an article from 2005 that mentions the police were sent to his house multiple times that August about domestic violence, but he wasn't charged with anything, and especially given the times I don't think that was more than a footnote for most people. The stuff that got him arrested started in 2011, after his one Cubs season in 2009.

ZiPS hates the Brewers again: https://blogs.fangraphs.com/2019-zips-projections-milwaukee-brewers/ Really illustrates how much Cain and Yelich carried them last year, since those are pretty healthy projections for both and that's still more than 4 wins worse than what they did last year. That depth chart is 2 wins worse than what's forecasted for the Cardinals even though the graphic includes an extra SP for Milwaukee. 41 WAR for STL, 39 for Milwaukee, 35 each for Pittsburgh and Cincinnati. 11 teams still yet to be released, including the Cubs. -

I'm surprised about that assignment (if that's the plan). I think he's ready for AA and I was surprised by how well he did in the AFL. He only had 7 games in Eugene and 4 in South Bend, I think Myrtle Beach is a pretty good starting spot. He'll still be able to move quickly if he hits as expected.
