  1. The football player being required to meet, practice, travel, and play in close quarters with a group of ~100 people is at significantly higher risk of getting sick. Just to put a number to it, in Lafayette County, MS there's a 97% chance a group of 100 people has a covid-positive individual. Brian Jones hanging out even in a group as big as 10 people is down to 30%. https://covid19risk.biosci.gatech.edu/ These are averages and testing helps, but the lack of an actual bubble environment means the realities still exist even if they might be able to help prevent runaway spread. Absolutely, football should go the way of boxing.
  2. Glad Robinson was able to find a Premier League home and where he has a decent path to playing time, though he'll definitely have to step up defensively to keep playing since Fulham seems likely to be battling relegation.
  3. Edman is a flash in the pan, but Canha(over 7 fWAR in his last 1000 PA) is probably a decent comparison of Happ's potential caliber.
  4. I don’t care what broadcasters wear. I mildly care that people in charge of Cubs broadcasts force broadcasters to wear something specific, because it demonstrates they don’t understand what makes a worthwhile broadcast, and may do other things I do care about. Like forcing a 3 man booth so Mark Grace has the opportunity to rant about his ex-wife.
  5. My Machado hatred is well documented but imo that is a very ordinary play once he makes the (admittedly unconventional) decision to try to track that ball.
  6. Miller is left handed, so they wouldn't be competing for the same at bats. That said, I haven't been paying close attention but especially since Phegley isn't catching I'm a little surprised Caratini hasn't gotten the nod there(and in a couple other past spots I did notice).
  7. terrific work from Happ all around there
  8. audible lol at “hey...must be the money”
  9. they abandoned their style . . . shockingly low scoring game although PSG looked pretty hapless until Mbappe came on. This week rocks. I wasn't able to start watching til the 70th minute or so, had they bunkered in before Gomez went off? I assumed between their talisman getting hurt and tired legs they didn't have much other choice, especially with Mbappe's speed being a huge threat.
  10. the MLS St. Louis team released their name and branding today: [tweet] [/tweet] I give it a 7/10. Best parts are the colors(hard to be unique in MLS and pulled that off), the design(arch, city flag, and city layout all blended together), and not being pretentious and saying SC. I probably would have put the text on top, and City is a bit uninspiring(though it is what St. Louis used to be called, and leaves room for organic nicknames), and nothing really leaps out and grabs you as a neutral, but it avoided catastrophe.
  11. I like Bradley, but if you're trading Bote for a reliever at this point they better be Bradley quality and have similar team control as Bote. More preferable is that if Bote is traded he's helping the rotation, a more expensive and consequential problem to ensure is solved for 2021 and beyond.
  12. I will say the one rule I feel strongly about is not liking the extra innings stuff. Making the best of a pandemic is fine I guess, but all the talk prior to Covid was fixing a problem that doesn't exist. 8.5% of games went to extra innings last year, less than 5% went more than 10 innings. I'm not typically a 'coastal bias' person, but I did notice that the AL East had 23% of 12+ inning games and can't help but wonder that a couple famous teams having outlier seasons in that regard is part of the institutional energy to make changes. Plus, expanded rosters and 3 batter relievers help with the problems created with long games.
  13. papu gomez didn't die for this
  14. I like the 3 batter rule and don't mind the DH and 28 man roster. I still think tying the DH to the SP is a good idea, not only for the strategy elements, but also as a marker of preserving the idea of a starting pitcher, especially with expanded rosters. A 14 man pitching staff with a DH is going to trend towards having a few short relievers and a lot of guys who can get through the order between 1-2 times. I'm not overly opposed to that future, but if you are one way to hedge against it is putting more value on SP stamina by attaching the DH to them.
  15. what a great day, Real Madrid and Juve go down
  16. There are some really good young players on that list, also Martial and Mount made it
  17. I have nothing to back this up, but I suspect that Kimbrel's incredible pre-Cubs career made it less likely that he'd go off the deep end, but now that he clearly has, I'm not sure how much likelier it makes him to climb out of it. Having consecutive seasons start in the summer with significant layoffs is one thing that is at least consistent in his Cubs tenure that hopefully won't happen next year, so that gives some future optimism to cling to, but that won't help with this season.
  18. Coomer with some unintentional satire this inning that would make Christopher Guest blush
  19. I think the reason it’s not reviewable is that too many things happen dependent on the original call after. Imagine this identical play happens in the bottom of the 9th of a tie playoff game. You review it and see it hit the ground, but what’s the ultimate call? If the call on the field was no catch Bryant is going to ensure he gets the lead runner, can we assume he would’ve been out or that there would be a double play?
  20. How far does the moustakas home run go without a juiced ball, i say maybe 300 feet
  21. If you start the next inning you have to get to three total batters faced.
  22. This is not specific to golf(I hate playing and think it’s borderline immoral/90% of courses should be parks instead), but in similar circumstances i find site:reddit.com searches and poking around/searching any specific subreddits that turns up ends up giving me a fairly useful barometer after 30 mins or so.
  23. Robel was a fun story last year, but he can’t field and got exploited pretty bad at the plate with minimal MLB exposure. Can’t say that I’m too worried about losing him given his age and the presence of Hoerner, Kipnis, Bote, Dietrich, and even Happ and Short.
