  1. I think the Cubs could have matched and/or beaten that offer, but I don't think Hendry was about to trade for Castillo with Walker still on the team. That takes away a good bit of leverage, since neither can really play any other position(Walker could be a 1B, but we have someone okay there). If we didn't already have a very good offensive player at 2B, I would be much more upset.
  2. Tyler was 21 in BA's top 30 last year. Neither had breakout years. Looks comparable to Wuertz and Grant Johnson, or similar.
  3. There is this annoying little thing called player choice. Numerous reports have stated that Hendry did ask Nomar to play LF, and that Nomar said basically 'no thank you'. If Nomar had said yes, several writers have indicated a deal would have been done already. It isn't always Hendry's fault for not pursuing/acquiring the public's desired target. The players have a say. http://www.nytimes.com/2005/12/01/sports/baseball/01sportsbriefs.ready.html
  4. just asking how many times has kerry been on the dl? That's relevant.
  5. That did really happen? Unreal. Yep, the assistant was Dooley.
  6. He's 100% right. He already said he didn't want to go into a detailed post saying how wrong that is, that's not childish or arrogant. Runs and RBI are terrible to use since they are entirely dependent on your teammates, and partially your spot in the order. HR are nice, but using them to make a point about how one player is better than the other isn't effective. Numbers like SLG(which Sulley posted) do a much better job. Same with SB. They're useful to show how often a player is effective at their percentage, but SB% is much better. Plus, those numbers together show you nothing about the most important parts of hitting, getting on base, and how often they get past first base by themselves.
  7. i must come to burnett's defense here, he's only had one injury. although i'd take a healthy wood over him any day. I thought I read that Burnett had 2 TJS's? 2001: 173.1 IP 2002: 204.1 IP 2003: 23 IP 2004: 120 IP 2005: 209 IP
  8. Inge would be a very solid move for the bench, just don't think that we're going to get his 2004 production(because of said BABIP).
  9. Jacque Jones? The Jacque Jones with the exact same OPS(with lower OBP) than Burnitz last year? The Jacque Jones who was even worse the year before? At least with Pierre you can make the argument that he was better than the embarrassment we trotted out in CF last year. You can't even make that argument with Jones.
  10. No, but by only backing "your" players on this forum, you're definately inferring that anyone else is pointless, therefore we most surely "have to get" Player X. That's my entire point - you can't approve the best canidates only, you have to be selective. I'm not implying anything so important to start an argument about, I just think you're too picky man! What are you talking about? "My" players? Because I'm one of many that don't want Pierre, or whoever else that you think I'm overly critical towards? Because I don't like or want certain players means I only approve of the best candidates only? And inferring that anyone else is pointless? That's an astonishing leap of logic.
  11. What? All of the players I listed at first have been mentioned multiple times in rumors, some(in the case of Bradley and Wilkerson) directly to the Cubs. AJ Burnett has been linked to the Cubs in the media, you think we'll sign him? Manny Ramirez has been linked to Seattle, you think they'll sign him? You have to be realistic. For crying out loud, I never said that we HAD TO GET, or WILL GET any of those players. Where did I say that?
  12. Wilkerson maybe, but several different outlets have been onto Bradley being on the Cubs radar. Of course, I never said that we had to get these players or bust, I was just asked to name players I liked, and I responded with some of the names that have been discussed.

  14. I like all kinds of players, out of the targets that have been brought up this offseason, I'm a fan of Bradley, Michaels, Wilkerson, Abreu, Giles, Furcal(not a fan of his price most likely), Lugo, etc. While I agree with each player you listed except for Lugo (I question his commitment), you can't be so specific. If a team went into the offseason saying "OK, we have 10 guys to choose from, and we need to sign 4 of them" - you have a very low percentage of that happening. When did I say or even imply this? You asked for players that I liked, so of the current names that have been bandied about I told you which ones I preferred. I just as easily could have said Adam Dunn, Placido Polanco, Lew Ford, Rafael Betancourt, Scott Linebrink, Travis Harper, David Riske, and Coco Crisp. I'm not going to be very satisfied with any upgrade, considering how terrible we were last season at CF, and that there are several better options out there that are cheaper and/or more effective. Pierre isn't that great. He slaps singles, takes a moderate amount of walks, and gets caught more than he should on the bases. I'm not the one that's trying to give him powers of putting teams over the top or the like. I see him for what he brings to the table, and it's not much IMO.

  16. If Quinn feels he's NFL ready, I don't think he should put off for a year to try to get a better spot in a weaker class. There's been too many players that have great Junior years and poor senior years. But, if the chance to compete for the National Title and/or Heisman is worth risking that payday to him, then it's not a bad decision at all to stay.
  17. kU lost to Nevada tonight, Nick Fazekas scored 30+ for the Wolfpack. In the post game handshake line, a kU assistant distinctly says "f- you" to Fazekas.
  18. Trade for Bradley + Lowe(Hill + Patterson to take on the salary and "headcase"), and then for Lugo + Gomes(Williams, Mitre, ? for one year SS and young player at an overloaded position). Offseason over except for the bench.
  19. One doesn't have to include '05 to figure out that Pierre isn't a great player. And why in the world would we hit him after Furcal? Furcal can actually hit for extra bases, so if we had the misfortune of acquiring Pierre, we'd definitely want Pierre to hit before him, not the other way around because Pierre is better at an out-wasting tactic. Also, how exactly does Pierre push a team over the edge? What force does he represent?
  20. I'm not a fan of acquiring a guy that will cost players to acquire, has a pretty hefty salary, and isn't very young, for the purpose of hitting 8th.
  21. Funny how these things play out. Right out of the gate, the Cubs looked like geniuses in taking Prior. Now, two years removed from 2003 and going on a third, it's looking more and more like Tex was the better pick. The guy is an absolute monster bat, and will be a star for a long long time. Prior OTOH, I hope his regression in 2005 was the result of lingering injuries he wouldn't disclose, and not indicative of where his career is heading. Because when you look at his soaring pitch counts, more than double his "prior" (hehe) BB rate, the declining K rate, the increasing ERA and WHIP--it's a very alarming situation. If he doesn't get back on track in 2006....I'm just sayin' Teixeira was pretty pedestrian away from Arlington last year (.809 OPS). For his career he's sub-800 OPS away from the hitters haven.

  23. In the future, if you want to know any updates if there are extended problems, there is another emergencyNSBB set up. Link
  24. ^^^^^ That's what I was talking about in my previous post. Thanks bc2k
