  1. His ability to miss bats is not irrelevant. I don't have those links handy, but TT or BK might. Are you just referencing K's or BB's as well? Because the walks are very much a concern. Sorry I don't have the link, but he's not just talking about K's. In the said link, it showed Wuertz was one of the best pitchers in all of baseball(like top 5 of ALL pitchers) in getting batters to swing and miss, whether that was strike 1, 2, or 3.
  2. After seeing the video on ESPN, I don't think that's what happened. I couldn't see Young himself, but it looked like it probably hurt the bat more than the umpire. He hardly even flinched. Because it hit him in the chest protector right after he turned around. That would have really, really hurt if it hit him in the side, back, head (even with the helmet), or leg. I think it's pretty to show intent to harm. I don't buy that. By the motion of the bat, it looks like he underhandedly flicked the bat at him, much like many hitters do after they've been walked. He meant to throw it at him, sure, but intent to harm? I personally don't think so. I bet he gets somewhere between 15-30 games, which IMO ranges from fair to slightly excessive based on previous punishments.
  3. Good stuff! And, Harvey walks twice to bring his BB/K to an awe-inspiring 5/20. To be honest, those are the only stats I look at for him. I don't care if he hits 60 HRs this year; I'm convinced that if he doesn't improve his discipline at the plate, he'll never make the bigs. RHarvey - 21Ks/6BBs EPatterson - 20Ks/7BBs Minor League career numbers Harvey: 50 BB, 240 K; .208 BB/K EPatt: 59 BB, 101 K; .584 BB/K
  4. If someone can find this somewhere else, please post it. It's not working in Firefox or IE for me. See if this works in any of your media players: mms://a1503.v108692.c10869.g.vm.akamaistream.net/7/1503/10869/v0001/mlb.download.akamai.com/10869/2006/open/teams06/tba/video/042606_durpaw_young_delmon_350.wmv?media_type=wms&av_type=video&event_pk=486886&product=gen_video Thanks, just found it at ESPN. And, yeah.... EDIT: On a more humorous note, is Buster Olney evolving into Peter Gammons' replacement? Screencap from the ESPN video: http://img139.imageshack.us/img139/6030/olney0xz.jpg

  6. Anthony Reyes has been bumped by Memphis. They now have RHP Brad Voyles (1-0, 1.50 ERA, 18 IP) going for them. Well FINE! I didn't want to see that matchup anyways!
  7. mlb.com's video content hates me
  8. works fine for me
  9. Clark had an ops of 1.003 last year and 30 homers in 349 abs. And from what I've heard there are no problems with him defensively. Plus he gives you that big target at 1st that Lee was. I think thats a more than a "slight" upgrade over Hairston... Again, he was great last year, but the 3 years prior to that he was terrible. I'm not sold that the guy suddenly found/regained the ability to put up outstanding numbers at age 34. It would be foolish to count on similar numbers this year, especially when he hasn't been that hot to start out with.
  10. Tampa has a glut of outfielders, and Gomes doesn't rate above Crawford, Baldelli, Young, or Upton/Cantu(if either is moved there). They know they aren't going to compete, and like Wilson in Pittsburgh they undervalue his abilities in their distribution of his playing time. Gomes himself isn't the point though. Go after a solution for RF, whether that's Gomes, Wilson, or whoever. Guaranteeing Clark a roster spot for next year is far from a flippant thing. Last year he was great, but it was the first time he put up a .300+ OBP since 2001. He'll be 35 next year, and he's limited to a position where we have a guy who plays just about every game, and we have someone in AAA(Sing) who will have a pretty decent shot to do the same things with the ability to play the OF for a cheaper price and more upside next year.
  11. If the cost is low, I don't see why people have such a hangup about versatility. It is legal to have guys on your bench whose primary purpose is to swing a bat. You don't have to double switch in every pinch hitter. And every bench player doesn't have to play 5 positions. The Cubs have an abundance of versatile players on their bench now, and it still sucks. What they don't have is bats, and they need them desperately. Well yeah, I'm not saying that they forego production in lieu of versatility, but Clark isn't a fantastically productive player, there's not going to be a lot of difference between him and Young or Hinske.
  12. If the injury forces you to make a move, then make one that has positive effects in the short and long term. Make a run at Jonny Gomes, Craig Wilson, or the like. If that fails, then make sure the person isn't confined to first base in your acquisition. Wilson again, Dmitri Young, Hinske, these guys serve a different purpose and may come at a cheaper cost. I guess I don't see much upside with paying a quality young player to get 2 months of a 1B only 34 year old, then guaranteeing that player money for '07.
  13. I totally agree with you. When he's on he's got absolutely electric stuff. I'll never forget the Houston game where he threw 15 straight sliders and made them all look like total fools. Williams is solid too. If we trade either, I'd rather it be for someone who has a more involved role than "stop gap for Lee and PHer when he gets back". I'd imagine that's about the max you'd get for either of them. We have a lot of pitchers who are right around their level, I don't object to dealing one to fill a glaring hole for 2 months. It sucks to lose Lee, but acquiring Clark or the like is only going to be a marginal upgrade over Hairston. Unless you're getting a defensive whiz too like a Mientkiewicz, the difference over only 2 months isn't worth giving up players of Wuertz's or Williams's caliber. Tony Clark is a very good first baseman defensively. Davenport Translations from BP have him right at average for his career.
  14. 296/358/676/1034 He looked downright overmatched at AAA when I got to see him last year. I don't think he's ready to provide offense, and I think that should be priority #1. Well, he's leading the Southern League (a pitchers league) in home runs, slugging percentage, total bases, and OPS. He didn't do that his first time aroud at Double A. Maybe he's learned something new... He didn't struggle at AA either last time. .306/.347/.497/.844. I looks to me like he's riding a hot streak from that spell of home runs. He's also 26 now as well. I don't think there's any big change, I think he's just having a good month.
  15. You really didn't need to qualify the first statement.
  16. I don't think anyone is suggesting to boo Pierre until he improves. I for one will hold off on booing Pierre until he shows improvement, at which point I will begin to boo him vociferously. And I think that's ridiculous. It's not as if Pierre isn't trying or showing poor attitude. Creating a hostile home environment for players who are giving their best is the last thing we need, but unfortunately it's becoming the norm.
  17. Williams is solid only in that he is not liquid nor vapor. And that he's logged significant major league innings with above average performance all before age 24.

  19. Someone needs to photoshop a Napoleon hat onto him for a Spanish American War Hero graphic. Seriously though, there's very little chance he's older than he says.

  22. I'll never forget one of my younger Cub games I attended, and they announced Froemming as the second base umpire. Immediately I hear a "Aw NO, NOT FROEMMING!" behind me. The guy was right.
  23. Z has repeatedly proven himself in the past. Marshall hasn't had anything CLOSE to Williams' meltdown against the Cards. Similarly, Marshall hasn't had anything close to Williams' 383 innings of above average(110 ERA+) performance at the major league level.
