    NFL Offseason

i thought there were enough fat white linemen to even things out That's literally all there is other than QBs, some LBs, the occasional safety, some slot WRs, and Christian McCaffery. But yeah, NFL coaching is a microcosm of institutionalized racism at work. The hot NFL head coaching candidates are offensive guys. The hot offensive guys are offensive coordinators or QB coaches. QB coaches and OCs are unironically usually former QBs. Because of the stereotype of black QBs not being smart enough as recently as like 5-10 years ago, you naturally don't have a lot of former NFL QBs who are black. Throw in the fact that a lot of black coaches in the NFL are defensive guys and the natural tendency for people to hire people that look like them (whites hire whites, blacks hire blacks, women hire women), and that's how we got to this point.
  2. Is Saadiq Bey a reach at 7 (where the Bulls will inevitably pick)? Because I really want Saadiq Bey if they pick outside of the top 3. He's not the best athlete in the world, but can spot up shoot with anybody in this draft and projects to be a solid defender with what looks like great length. Not really crazy about many prospects in this draft.
  3. I'm watching the Bears/Titans game from 2012 (10-6 season missed playoffs in Lovie's last year). And my God did was this organization flat out negligent to Jay Cutler. I mean, this is the year they got Brandon Marshall and they had Forte, but the rest of the offense is putrid. Hester the #2 WR. Kellen Davis is the TE since they previously traded potential future Hall of Famer, Greg Olsen. The OL consists of J'Marcus Webb, Chilo Rachal, Lance Louis and Gabe Carimi with Roberto Garza being the only respectable player at center, and he's 33 years old at this point. Mike effing Tice is the offensive coordinator. I guess rookie Alshon Jeffery is on this team, but I haven't seen him on the field. Granted the Bears put up 51 points in this game, but right now it's 31-2 and they have about 60 yards of total offense. Blocked punt for TD, Urlacher pick 6, Hester return inside the 10, Peanut punch recovery inside the 20. The 2012 Bears had 3 games under 190 total yards of offense. They had 2 more games under 250 total yards and 4 additional under 300 yards. This was the infamous season where 11 QBs threw for over 4000 yards (14 over 3,800) and Cutler threw for just 3,033 in 15 games. Only Christian Ponder and Mark Sanchez threw for less with at least 13 starts. Almost HALF of the passing yards went to Marshall. The Bears invested a ton in Cutler in terms of picks and eventually money, but never actually invested in the OL. Invested in WR finally with Marshall and Jeffery, but Marshall was a known headcase and then they gave him offensive coordinators/a head coach that weren't fit for an NFL job. This franchise seriously could have won multiple rings under Lovie had they ever even had 2 of competent offensive weapons, OL investment, a legit NFL OC.
  4. And they have used several top 100 picks on interior OL (Long, Daniels, Whitehair, Grasu) while drafting 0 tackles in the top 100. Sent from my moto e5 supra using Tapatalk
  5. The point wasn't that it was untrue. Just that a lot of it didn't really seem necessary. I actually think it was a very mediocre documentary in all honesty. Supposed to be a 1998 documentary, but there was very little 1998 footage and it was kind of the footnote to basically was a Jordan career doc. Point out Scottie berating Krause, but no actual footage of it. Point out Scottie sitting out in an irrelevant season. Point out Scottie couldn't play thru certain things while pointing out Jordan could. It just felt like Jordan had a chance to explain his way out of things, while Scottie had no say (granted, he did say he wouldn't change anything that's not really an explanation just a statement). Not really trying to start a conspiracy theory, just that I see why Scottie is reportedly, upset.
  6. Word is Scottie is pretty upset about how he was portrayed. I tend to side with him. 1. Berating Jerry Krause on the team bus. Was portrayed as him being way out of line, yet Jordan spends the whole special making fat and short jokes about Krause. 2. Didn't want to F up his summer, so waited to have surgery because he was mad about being underpaid. Jordan points out that he was underpaid for years too, though made tons of money off of endorsements. 3. Sitting out the last second because shot went to Kukoc instead of him. Was a Jordan and 1998 Bulls doc, but this incident happened in 94-95 when Jordan wasn't on the team so wasn't really relevant. 4. Scottie has a game 7 migraine. Jordan played in the "flu game". 5. Scottie has a bad back in last game. Jordan had to play extra minutes and score 40+ after playing every game to keep the team afloat with Scottie having in-season surgery. I don't know that Jordan intentionally tried to make Scottie look bad, but moreso tried to make himself look good. Even with his bullying coming to light, Jordan was in tears explaining why that made him great and a winner. I don't know if it was in response to LeBron fans when confronted with "he had to run to another superstar to get a ring" who point out Jordan didn't win without Pippen (Jordan showing Pippen fell apart without him, and wasn't built the same to fight thru adversity). Or if it was to show why he's the GOAT and the only other superstar he had footage/inside knowledge of was Scottie. But it all seemed pretty shady to me.

Yeah, if they are really guilty of what it appears they are being charged for, a suspension is the least of their worries. They could end up doing 15 years. Yeah and now I'm reading things like a mandatory 10, Baker hasn't turned himself in, the Giants have been in contact, he's ignoring calls after hanging up on a cop...The first thing I heard was Baker decided to rob the party because he was losing money gambling, took watches and cash worth like $40K...$40K!! Baker was scheduled to make nearly 2.4 Mil this year, with 8 Mil total guaranteed over the next 3 years, along with a possible 5th year option in the double digit millions. Dunbar was scheduled to make 3.4Mil and was in line for a bigger payday after the season as a free agent. They had lost a combined 70K the night before, I'm assuming playing against the same people. I'm guessing at some point they figured out some cheating of some sort was going on and came ready the next night. My guess is they think they caught some cheating, flipped out, started a fight and planned to get revenge/their money back. Police reports state the 3 cars were parked outside for easy getaway.

I'm less sold on the draft pick ideas. The other changes about not allowing teams to block candidates for coordinator roles and extending the Rooney rule to minority candidates are easy ones. With the draft comp thing, I'm not convinced it will affect teams decisions that much, but it will definitely create questions for every minority candidate who gets hired whether they were the best candidates. I know it's easy to rag on the NFL as being a cesspool, but on the issue of minority hires it's easy to forget they're the only league really doing anything like the Rooney Rule. The NBAs coaching/executive representation issue is just as bad and they're doing nothing formal (they have some diversity advisor in the league office that teams can consult and that's it). The NBA is doing much better than the NFL. Not sure what the numbers are now, but at one point there were as many as 14 black head coaches. Several NBA assistants are minorities. The NBA has also been the most proactive by miles in hiring women as coaches, referees and executives. NBA executives aren't really as diverse as it should be....but they are doing better than any other league. 20% of NBA exes are minorities. Over 36% of the NBA league office are minorities. Almost 46% of assistant coaches are black. I'm sure the NBA has some sort of program, they just don't feel the need to announce. Even if they don't, they are still doing pretty well, all things considered.
  9. Schedule works out pretty well for the Bears, IMO. A late BYE week (11) will bode well if they are a contending team. Helping them contend is a schedule that starts with 6 straight losing teams from 2019 and the non-playoff Rams thru 7 weeks. Granted, one of those teams is the revamped Bucs, but the Bears get them in Chicago on a short week (Thursday night) for both teams. Good chance to get off to a fast start and have teams playing catch up if they can go 6-1, 5-2 ish in the first 7. Of course, that means 7 of the final 9 are against playoff teams. Of those 7 though, 4 are against GB and Minnesota. If the Bears are any good, they'll have to beat those teams anyway. And Nagy is 4-0 against the Vikings. Saints is at home, but almost assuredly a loss. Getting the Texans in Chicago in December should help get a win there if the Bears are actually any good. However, it's of note that the Bears have never beaten the Texans in franchise history. The Bears have also never beaten Tom Brady. 4 primetime games (1 TNF, 1 SNF, 2 MNF) 11 noon/1 EST starts
  10. I'm actually pretty pleased with this offseason. I'm surprised that they accomplished as much as they did without extending Robinson. Although I would like to see that get done soon. The offense looks a lot more dynamic than what they had last year. I don't know how I feel about the offseason. I like upgrading the pass rush from Floyd to Quinn, especially when possibly downgrading at CB. I've been calling for them to take a CB early (top 60) for years, so I like that they did that, even though it wasn't the pick I necessarily would have made. I like trying to open up the field offensively with a deep threat. I don't like that so much of the 2020 offense seems to be predicated on "oh, we just struggled in 2019 because of position coaching and health". Injuries to Long and Burton did hurt the offense, but it already wasn't good enough. And their replacements seem to have been brought in based on the simple fact they stay healthy. Graham (at his age) isn't the talent that Burton is anymore, but he's stayed healthy. Ifedi is basically the bad version of Long we saw in 2019 and based on his history, isn't an upgrade other than he's been healthy for 16 games. As for QB, I completely understand the resources it would take to truly upgrade from Trubisky. Just wasn't going to happen. So, I'm fine with taking 1 year to try to get one of them to take them to the playoffs. But I don't like hoping to find lightning in a bottle from 2 mediocre QBs while not seriously upgrading either the weapons or the line.
  11. Gipson's solid though. Good pickup by the Bears. Roster at a full 90.
  12. Yeah, not as excited about this move as I was when he first signed. He dropped 7 passes last year, which was the same as Allen Robinson. Only issue was ARob had about 100 more targets. Dropped 7 of 37 catchable passes. That's not good.
  13. Bears signed Ted Ginn Jr. This is an interesting move. I would think they would have done this move before the draft. I liked the thought of bringing in a veteran field stretcher to pair with Allen Robinson and have Anthony Miller in the slot. I probably would have preferred Demarcus Robinson (knows a variation of the offense) over 35-year old, Ginn. But I think this is a decent move. The Bears need to get the ball to Robinson (96 catches last year) and Miller (90 catch pace from weeks 11-16 last year when the QB was good) first and foremost. Graham gives them a reliable TE, in the sense that he'll actually be on the field and be a height mismatch. Cohen is still here to get a bunch of targets. They honestly only need a guy that can give them about 4 targets per game in a different area of the field (AKA down the field) than where everyone else operates. No pressure on Mooney to come in and be the guy charged with keeping the defense honest down the field, which is good because he may not be ready for that role anyway, coming from a small school like Tulane. The role of the outside WR across from Robinson doesn't really fit Wims (who is too similar to Robinson in skillset) or Ridley (who is more of a slot guy) either. So, one of them will likely be the odd man out. Overall, I think the Bears' offensive weapons are probably slightly above average. But if they get half decent QB play, they have the ability now to hit teams at all levels. Robinson in the intermediate-to-long game outside. Miller with 2-way go's short, intermediate, and occasionally deep from the slot. Graham up the seam. Cohen out of the backfield. And now Ginn deep. Then there are still the wildcards like Patterson, who can line up anywhere. Montgomery, who can really catch and is hard to deal with in the open field. And then whatever they get out of guys like Mooney, Ridley and Kmet.
  14. Of the UDFAs, I like Pierce. Beating out Ryan Nall shouldn't be a tall task. He's got breakaway speed, can break a big run, and is a viable pass catcher out of the backfield. Also very intrigued by McSwain from Duke. Probably more of a developmental practice squad guy that won't make the 53, but kinda has the Roy Robertson-Harris body type. Traore, I've never heard of, but being the top JUCO tackle and getting a scholarship to LSU means he has some ability. Mack's brother is probably gonna be an inside LB, based on his size. Wagner, as you might expect based on size and basketball background, is going to be a TE, bringing the total back to 10 TEs on the roster.
  15. Damn dude did you hack into my spreadsheet? I have a Bears/fantasy football spreadsheet that I keep for data for any articles I may write. One of the things I have is "who I would have selected" sheet, and I try to do it right after the pick so as to not be one of those people 3 years down the line that's like, "I would have taken Mahomes, Kamara, and Kittle". But anyway, I have these guys who I would have picked yesterday: Grant Delpit Denzel Mims Bryce Hall Curtis Weaver Hakeem Adeniji David Woodward Darius Anderson
  16. Neither of you make any sense. He's a B- player, but the pick is a failure? WTF does that even mean? I understand that he was a top 10 pick and should have an A player. But him being a failed pick because he's a B- instead of an A is some Ricky Bobby "if ya ain't first ya last" type of BS. I don’t really think you understand he was a top ten pick. If your top ten pick doesn’t make it to his next contest with you, it was a bad pick. A bad pick and a F pick is not the same thing.
  17. Agreed. Floyd himself may be a B- player, but the pick success was a failure.
  18. He started for 4 years for them. I don't think you can give Leonard Floyd the same grade as Kevin White, who started 0 games and is out of the league before his 5th year. Floyd was cut because he was scheduled to make 13Mil. He was signed like a day and half later for 10Mil. Same logic makes Adrian Amos a bad pick because they made to effort to re-sign him after 4 years.
  19. Those are not real people.
  20. His picks in a general sense have been fine. He's drafted better than average overall. The issue is and has always been he missed the QB pick. Nothing else really matters. Seattle blows the draft every year by picking 3rd rounder in the 1st and still win 10+ because they hit on the QB. You really think he’s been better than average overall? If there’s anyone I trust about football on this forum it’s you but I can’t see it. I agree if the Bears drafted Maholmes instead of Trubisky and he developed to be as good he’d have nearly infinite job security but he didn’t. And he missed on White (yes I know injuries were a big reason but he was also someone who many said needed development), he missed on Floyd too. Smith has been a solid pick so 1 out of 4 in the first round. Second round we have James Daniels, Anthony Miller, Adam Shaheen, Cody Whitehair and Eddie Goldman. Is that 2/5 or 3/5? So 3 or 4 out of his 9 picks in the first 2 rounds? Even with solid drafting later on it’s hard to be good when you hit on ~40% of your top 2 round picks. I wouldn't call Floyd a miss. Granted, I know he was a top 10 pick, but he's a solid NFL player. He does everything well accept his primary job, rush the passer. But he got cut and is going to make 10Mil this season. That's not a paycheck for a player I'd call a miss. Probably a C to C- type pick, which is not ideal, but it happens. Those 2nd rounders are mostly hits. Anthony Miller is really good. He's had shoulder issues, but his biggest issue has been the QB. When Mitch was good last year (for 4-5 weeks late in the year), he was playing at a 100/1100 pace season. Good QB play and he's an 80 catch, 1000 yard guy in 2020. Daniels is decent too. This is probably a big year for him if he's a hit or miss, but he's shown enough to warrant a starting job this coming season. Can't discount his mid round work either. Jackson (all pro), Amos (who's loss became Foles), Howard, Nichols, were all great picks.
  21. What's the details on this trade? Both 6ths and the later 7th for the 5th and a slightly higher 7th. Got 173, 227 Traded 196, 200, 233
  22. You can still get plenty of oline help in the 6th and 7th Help me out on that one. What’s the likelihood of finding plenty of help this far in? I’m trying to see it with Pace. I really am. But his picks consistently leave me befuddled. His picks in a general sense have been fine. He's drafted better than average overall. The issue is and has always been he missed the QB pick. Nothing else really matters. Seattle blows the draft every year by picking 3rd rounder in the 1st and still win 10+ because they hit on the QB.
  23. Kenny Robinson, S, West Virginia Hakeem Adeniji, OT, Kansas James Lynch, DL, Baylor Brycen Hopkins, TE, Purdue. What the hell, I'd take him at this point for the future U. 10 TEs, why not 11? Natane Muti, OG, Fresno State Rashad Lawrence, DL, LSU Curtis Weaver, Edge, Boise State Bradley Anae, Edge, Utah Prince Tega Wanogho, OT, Auburn Kenny Willikes, Edge, Michigan State Donovan Peoples-Jones, WR, Michigan Darnell Mooney, WR, Tulane Geno Stone, S, Iowa Kenny Robinson, S, West Virginia Hakeem Adeniji, OT, Kansas For the love of God, just don't pick Jake Fromm
  24. Kenny Robinson, S, West Virginia Hakeem Adeniji, OT, Kansas James Lynch, DL, Baylor Brycen Hopkins, TE, Purdue. What the hell, I'd take him at this point for the future U. 10 TEs, why not 11? Natane Muti, OG, Fresno State Rashad Lawrence, DL, LSU
