  1. Being similar in how a grievance would be allowed is not the same as the likelihood of success. Russell is still subject to arbitration in future years with his new team, and the negative signal of being cut by a team that would have kept him without the DV is pretty straight forward. Wait...if he were released, and became a free agent, he would still be subject to arbitration with his new team?
  2. I hated when they used her ever yeah awful, bitter character. Although she was sort of meant to be that way. I mean, her name was Livia for a reason. In a show about Italians, that can't be coincidence.
  3. Happ, Zobrist, Almora, Rizzo will get his token game or 2, Schwarber, LaStella, Baez/Russell and some AAA/FA guy are all options I see getting at least a game That’s going to be hard when Happ hits 162 leadoff dongs. While only seeing 162 leadoff pitches.

  5. So they gave a 32 year old CF a 5/80 contract, when their OF was their strength? CF was not a strength. They got all of 1.3 WAR out of that position last season. This year they're projected to get 3.2 WAR, thanks to Cain. Not to say that I think it made sense to go after CF rather than a SP, but they probably thought they would be able to trade Santana for a pitcher. Once that fell apart, doubt they wanted to hand out another big contract to a pitcher.
  6. That seems almost insulting. Their offseason still confuses me to no end. Brewers wanted to be able to say they were in on all the pitchers, but didn't want to get saddled with any big contracts.
  7. It should be a feature of MLB.tv. All players mic'd all the time, and as a subscriber, you get to choose which audio stream to listen to.
  8. I think its nearly exactly what fangraphs predicts what will happen. It's precisely nearly exactly what Fangraphs predicts will happen.
  9. That's got to be the least bold prediction I've read in ages...
  10. He's using a new grip this year. Really? Curious to see what it looks like now... I know Contreras is trying to get him to throw it more often and have full confidence in his repertoire. Here's a longish quote from a much longer article on The Athletic: The article is quite good - worth signing up for a trial subscription to read the whole thing. https://theathletic.com/261590/2018/03/05/with-a-new-grip-on-his-curve-even-kyle-hendricks-cant-contain-his-excitement/
  11. Heyward puts up a 1.100 OPS and opts out of his contract at the end of the year. How's that for bold?
  12. He flamed out pretty spectacularly on the Bewers forum: http://forum.brewerfan.net/viewtopic.php?f=66&t=36484&p=1090696 That's after deleting his account on Twitter because, supposedly, the Brewers brass had become aware of him, and it put his source in jeopardy.
  13. It's the long con, man. The last 12 season have all been to set up start March 31st, 2018.
  14. If the Cubs had snagged Ohtani, as cheap as he was, I wonder if they would have skipped signing Chatwood, and gone straight after Darvish from the beginning. If I'm not mistaken, Ohtani made his choice a day before the Cubs inked Chatwood. Eh...probably not...
  15. Since Russell will hit FA quite a bit younger, and since he received a $2.6M signing bonus, there isn't quite the same urgency for him to jump. And based on the year he had last year, I don't think there's quite the same urgency for the Cubs to offer him such an extension. Now, if he has a 4WAR season this year, the Cubs calculus might change, but Russell's is less likely to sign if he thinks he can sustain it.
  16. Maybe a bit, but it's not like this is unprecedented. Strasburg took the extension rather than FA, as well. For the right amount, Boras clients will extend, and it's not like the Astros got a discount rate. Boras has made some miscalculations, but overall he's pretty shrewd. There's little chance that at ~30 Altve would get a bigger contract.
  17. "Sometimes I doubt your commitment to #sparklemotion!" I may have watched Donnie Darko a few too many times...
  18. Screw different attempts to speed up the game. They should try to make it more exciting. I say booby trap the field. If the fielder steps on the wrong spot, he falls into a large water tank and has to wrestle a giant squid. If he wins, it's an out. If he loses, he's dead and that position is vacated for the remainder of the game. Also maybe spike the water coolers with a fast acting hallucinogen, and force the hitters to drink before each AB. Oh, and each inning the umpires should be replaced with poorly restrained, increasingly terrifying animals. Or not...I don't know...
  19. Post 1900, for the people with 3 or more, it would be: Babe Ruth - 10 Willie Mays - 9 Walter Johnson - 7 Rogers Hornsby - 7 Ted Williams - 6 Mickey Mantle - 5 Pete Alexander - 5 A- Rod - 5 Mike Trout - 5 Honus Wagner - 4 Stan Musial - 4 Roger Clemens - 4 Albert Pujols - 4 Cy Young - 3 Christy Mathewson - 3 Bob Gibson - 3 Carl Yaz - 3 Cal Ripken - 3 Greg Maddux - 3 If you did it irrespective of league and just went with overall MLB lead: Ruth - 7 Mays - 7 Johnson - 6 Hornsby - 4 Mantle - 4 Williams - 4 Bonds - 4 Wagner - 3 Gibson - 3 Ripken - 3 Clemens - 3 Maddux - 3 Trout - 3 Maybe I don't understand the top list, but how does Bonds lead MLB in WAR 4 times (per the second list), and not crack the top list? Shouldn't he have *at least* 4 in the top list?
  20. But when he pulls a Lester on us...
  21. We're all going to be devastated when Chatwood is only as good as 2015 Lester rather than 2015 Arrieta...
  22. By bWAR, at least, it’s closer to mid-60s for Sandberg and high-50s for Sosa. By fWAR, the Sandberg trade, once you account for all the players involved, came out as net +59.8. The Sosa trade comes out to +61.3. Bell's -2 fWAR season in '93 puts Sosa just a bit ahead of Ryno in net value.
  23. And there's this latest quote from Kershaw: Some of these guys sure are salty about his choice...
