  2. I'm starting to wonder if the Ricketts' took away Theo and Jed's phones, and put them in the corner or something. They're not signing players. They're not trading players. Are they even still alive?
  3. Tulo is no lock to he healthy a whole year and Didi may miss most of the season. Torres at short, DJ at 2B, Tulo backs both up if healthy/gets some DH at bats Well, since they have such a dearth of infielders, we've got one they can have for a bag of peanuts...
  4. There (arguably) is if they're genuinely concerned about the starting rotation. Even if you're worried about the rotation, I have a hard time being convinced that Hamels is the solution at $20M. I hope I'm wrong, but I'm worried about repeat of 2017 John Lackey.
  5. I'm guessing that if Toronto thought he was 100% healthy, they would have kept him to start the season and then try to trade him. Even if they ate most of the salary to get a decent return, that's what they're doing now anyway with no payback at all other than goodwill. Too bad he wasn't worth Jason Heyward and some cash...
  6. They can just sell them to each other. Problem solved!
  7. Yeah, and I don’t think that’s a bad thing. Most high school kids get chewed up by the system, and 10 years later have nothing to show for it. Granted, this gives the NCAA more power, which is never a good thing, but kids going from high school to the minor leagues usually doesn’t end well for the kids.
  8. I really like the idea of control starting when a player becomes a pro. Let control be 7 or 8 years, but that includes your time in the minors. It would disincentivise things like keeping players like Vlad Jr. down in the minors just because. That doesn't fix everything, but it's a good first step.
  9. Also every team has to send two tributes to the capital every year to participate in the hunger games.
  10. It's the offseason, and the Cubs haven't done squat. Everyone is cranky.
  11. The player cost was at $186.2M last year, which is what the article stated: https://www.apnews.com/245ac5e3fe864a94aa432359b2a5ce7a Sure, that number is averaged out, but since we're not talking about a 1 year contract, it's a wash. Since the Cubs don't give us their balance sheet, we can't say for sure how profitable they were, but as the 3rd most valuable baseball team per Forbes, it's hard to believe they're anywhere near the tipping point.
  12. I'll be shocked if he takes a contract without opt outs. It's the mega contract thing to do these days. Short, long, it doesn't matter. Unless they're paying him like $60M a year or something.
  13. Very much so. My parents were Pakistani, and coming from Nigeria when we immigrated. Well educated or not, they are precisely the type of shithole countries he's trying to limit immigration from.
  14. I hope they worry about the central, considering how, in the last 4 years, we've only one it easily once, with great difficulty once, and ended up WC teams the other two times. The NL Central is probably going to be a grind again, and your division always needs to be the #1 consideration. After that, the playoffs are a crapshoot.
  15. I can comment on this, as someone who immigrated to this nation legally, as a child. Immigration is a time consuming and expensive process. I was fortunate that both my parents, despite being from the 3rd world, happened to be part of a minuscule middle class, and had 2 PhD's and 3 Masters between them. They were well educated, and had *some* money. Most of the people President Trump seeks to block with his wall are poor people, desperately seeking a better life. Many are seeking asylum, and literally cannot afford the time commitment required to immigrate legally. I don't believe in purely open borders. There needs to be common sense constraints on who comes into our country, and how many people come into our country. However, I don't believe in the idea that only those who are already relatively well off should be allowed it. That belief is antithetical to the American ideals, and what made this nation great in the first place. Also, you still haven't responded to my request for a source on the volcano statement. If you'll note, I haven't said anything mean about you. I'm all for civilized debate, and if I'm shown that I'm wrong about something, I'll own up to it. I hope you'll do the same.
  16. Yes, because the core's horrible failure to hit only got us to 95 wins last season. There's no way a bat like Harper could push this team over the top.
  17. Please source this. When Mt. St. Helens blew, it released enough CO2 to account for 2.5 days of human activity. Are you saying there was an eruption 1825x larger than Mr. St. Helens somewhere in South America recently? https://volcanoes.usgs.gov/vhp/gas_climate.html Once the planet stops being able to support us, all those societal needs don't mean a thing. I wonder what's contributing the water issues around the globe.... But here's the thing...none of that was my point. The problem with Sinclair is that they force stations and newscasters to air pro-Trump segments. This is literally propoganda during a newscast. Just because a private entity is carrying water for the government doesn't make it any less propaganda.
  18. The biggest problem with Sinclair isn't their bias, their support of bigotry, or their penchant for climate change denial. They are literally turning news broadcasts into propaganda. And it's not by hiring the Hannity style ultra-partisan folks. They're forcing their anchors, despite their beliefs, to run pro-Trump segments. That's what you see in North Korea and Saudi Arabia.
  19. I just pretend Heyward gives half his annual salary to Rizzo out of guilt. It makes me feel much better. I like to pretend that Heyward plays better. It helps me sleep at night.
  20. It's a boys' club, and they don't turn on one another. Remember how the Brewers trotted out every minority player on their roster to talk about what a great guy Hader is after his tweets surfaced?
  21. No, really, you don't. You cut your losses and move on. I'm not even comfortable with the idea of trading to try to recoup some value. I get that it's the right business move, but some things should be bigger than business. I don't want to gain anything from his shitty existence. I want the team to drop him like the flaming bag of horsefeathers that he is. If I were more vindictive, maybe I'd want him sent off to the minor leagues to sit on a bench and burn a number of his most valuable years. But I don't know that that accomplishes anything, and I'm pretty sure that would result in a viable grievance claim.
  22. Holy horsefeathers! His argument is that being an abusive horsefeathers reduces the cost for the Cubs, so they should take advantage of that rather than doing the morally superior thing: "...but Russell’s bigger-than-baseball issues provide salary relief that should keep them side by side in 2019..." horsefeathers Phil Rogers right in the ear.
  23. What’s the last major win by the Players Union? This has been a gradual move in the owners direction for decades and the players extended Tony Clark as Union leader. I’d expect it’ll continue to move in the owners direction moving forward. Tony Clark is working for the man. Send him to some negotiating classes for God’s sake. Or surround him with some good attorneys. Jesus. Tony Clark is no longer negotiating. MLBPA is getting aggressive because the players finally realized how much they allowed themselves to get screwed the last time around: https://www.fangraphs.com/blogs/the-mlbpa-has-a-new-chief-negotiator/ and
