  1. But there is no mystical "clutch" ability. There are those who can maintain focus and there are those who cannot. The best simply do their job in the same manner in every situation, and let the law of averages play out. However, those players who cannot maintain their focus under pressure can appear to be "unclutch". This is simply a case of them not doing their job well (see Jacque Jones in key situations). Having said this, players are not automatons, and there are a number of psychological factors than can cause a player to fail under perceived pressure more often than usual. It is incumbent upon them to deal with this, though. As for the Cubs' problems this year, they have had to do more with the bullpen and a lack of fundamental awareness than anything else.
  2. yikes...did you notice a difference between the cubs and braves today? the cubs clutched their way to a hard-clutched clutch from behind clutch, while the braves choked away a lead in the ninth. Gutless dogs, those Braves.
  3. http://chicagosports.chicagotribune.com/sports/baseball/cubs/cs-070614cubsbits,1,6116993.story?coll=cs-home-headlines.com I'm sure the Cardinals are willing to spend $100M+ for Zambrano. Even if they were, Omar Minaya will offer Z more than Walt Jocketty has ever seen if Z hits the market. It is the Cubs or the Mets for Z after this season. I would say the Yankees, but Z likes to hit too much, IMO, and the Mets would make a comparable offer.
  4. If Kenny is demonstrating some pathology here, perhaps teams will stop dealing with him.
  5. I spent most of my life there too. And there are many many many worse places to live. If nothing else, in Iowa, you can always find a good steak (or chop, for those that don't eat red meat). I know there are many worse places to live, I was mostly joking. But I'd never move back.
  6. I just picked up I'll Sleep When You're Dead the other day. Good stuff. It's good in the same way that Michael Jordan is good at basketball. Well, I can only bring myself to actually buy maybe one or two albums a year, fwiw.

  8. I swear I think a third of your all time posts are derisive of me i swear two thirds of your posts are worthy of derision. You are being a jerk and your negativity is really spoiling a light hearted thread and competition. Isn't abuck from Iowa? If so, that would explain a lot. Leave him to his misery. FTR- I lived in Iowa for most of my life, I just managed to escape.
  9. I wouldn't call that worst case scenario. Worst case is Murton doesn't regain his stroke, Floyd scuffles but racks up just enough service time to guarantee his option, and Jones stays. Even if Floyd is great for 2-3 weeks, his chances of reaching those goals are not great. Right, but that's not really the point. The point is this move hasn't solved anything for us, long term. And, in my opinion, makes us worse. I don't know that it made us worse. Murton was not good as a PH, not good without consistent AB's. Jones and Floyd were going to get most of the PT anyway. I don't think the move made the team better (though it is better for Matt), but I don't think it made the team appreciably worse, either.
  10. There's a thread in transactions.
  11. It's not about getting every at bat. It's about getting a reasonable amount. In August and September last year he had 82 and 92 at bats. In April and May of this year he had 44 and 61. He's had 14 in June. He's not in a platoon, he's been the 6th OF. It's so blatantly obvious you'd have to purposefully look away from the facts to think this hasn't been the root cause. Yeah, when you look at the splits you can clearly see Matt plays at a completely different level when he gets the lion's share of the at bats.
  12. I don't see how anybody could possibly think it's not about the lack of consistent time. No kidding. Good track record in the minors. Good player in basically a full year in MLB. Suddenly can't find it when he's put in a platoon of sorts (a very random one, at that). Seems to me, if you're looking for a culprit, you have to at least start w/ the lack of consistent playing time, don't you? He was playing well in a platoon in July/August of last year. He played well in a platoon in July of 05. That's 3 of the best 5 months of his career in the major leagues. Murton showed consistently before this year that he could play well when he wasn't getting every at-bat. I don't see why that would suddenly change this year. He was getting most of the AB's in August and September last year (his best months by far) - about 90 a month. He has 119 total this season. The platoons aren't comparable.

Seems to me, if you're looking for a culprit, you have to at least start w/ the lack of consistent playing time, don't you? It's as clear as day. Matt just looks like a completely different player in this ridiculous "platoon", from his approach to the results. He looks lost.
  14. Mephistopheles was the incarnation of the devil that made the deal with Faust.
  15. Ditto. Without consistent AB's, Murton is useless. Best thing for him.
  16. I'm actually having a hard time with this. It's Yin vs. Yang here, I'm afraid I'll upset the balance. Plus I actually like them both.
  17. Would Guillen have made the play. He isnt the best SS around. No, Guillen doesn't get to that ball, IMO.
  18. He'll Pierre out. Yup. Jacque is the new 4-3.
