  1. No, what happened? My favorite part was when Seth Davis asked him what he thought about people calling him a liar. His response was something like "Is lying the same thing as not telling the truth? I'm not sure." He also cried. I'm not usually prone to schadenfreude, but that sounds glorious.
  2. No, what happened?
  3. He probably just got tired of watching his team being dominated all game long. Tennessee just isn't a good team right now, or even close. Couldn't happen to a better guy.
  4. It was definitely a "win now" move. The downside is that if they don't win now, it could backfire pretty badly. The Brewers went from having a top farm system to maybe the thinnest in the game in the past few seasons. Fielder will walk after 2011, with Greinke almost certainly following suit after 2012. After that year, they may well have one good SP and holes in CF, 2B, C, SS, RF and 1B. Mat Gamel will probably fill 1B, but he's no Fielder. They traded away their SS as well as their top prospects at CF and 2B and top pitching prospects as well. They could be holding onto the fool's hope that winning in 2011 will influence some to stay, but it's a gamble either way. But given that the Brewers' time with all those lauded prospects could pass with nothing really to show for it a distinct possibility, I think it's a move Melvin had to make.
  5. meh, Mitch Atk...err Randy Wells could do that. Last year, Wells gave up 1 or less ER in 11 of his 32 starts (34.4%). Garza did it in 13 of his 32 starts (40.6%). In 2009, Wells gave up 1 or less ER in 12 of his 27 starts (44.4%). Garza did it in 8 of his 32 starts (25%). So, yeah, Randy Wells could do that. Again, let's remember Garza did it in the AL East. I'm fairly certain Wells wouldn't fare as well.
  6. He's not too popular around here, but I like Grace as well. Especially if the alternative is Stone. Or Otto. Or Plesac.
  7. It wasn't anything unusual. They hit that 3 to go up 19 and then took their foot off the gas. They do it all the time when they have a comfortable lead and then they stop being aggressive and trying to score and the other team makes a run. Yeah, it kinda was unusual. There were several passes to no one. McCamey was even turning the ball over. It was bad. If it was against a decent team, it would have been a lot worse. The hot shooting in the first half is the only thing that saved us from a bad loss. If Iowa was even mediocre the Illini lose. I'm over all the "they just took their foot off the gas" and "they lose their concentration against bad teams" rationalization. Playing like crap is playing like crap. Turning it on and off isn't a real solid strategy. This was a pretty discouraging game, given that the Illini had supposedly been concentrating on their "focus" recently.
  8. We won, but this has been one of the worst performances of the season. So many bad passes and unforced turnovers. Thankfully Iowa is really, really bad.
  9. they do???? Potentially, I suppose. If Wood stays healthy and pitches like he did for the Yankees, it will be strong. If Guzman can pitch, it could be great. Having Grabow pitch decently would go a long way as well. That's a lot of if, though.
  10. That would be the ultimate indignity. That said, Iowa was easier to hate when they weren't god awful...nah, they're still really easy to despise.
  11. Someone should bump the Nomar thread from time to time, it was epic.
  12. I'm not defending Weber but, the game was decided by the officiating not his coaching or lack there of It wasn't the officiating that decided the game. The intentional foul was an atrocious call, but our fate was sealed when we didn't get a defender back after the three. The Illini just played like crap the last 90 seconds. A lot of it was just inexplicable stupidity.
  13. Because the Crew are probably desperate to make a run before Fielder walks, which he will. Still, it's a bit surprising. Still, it's a good short term move for the Crew, even if Greinke is a tad on the unpredictable side.
  14. its also disgustingly patronizing and quasi-racist so yeah perhaps i'm projecting but i squirm everytime i see something like 'kicking out that great hardworking white player (mark grace) for some lazy latin player (literally name anyone denigrated in the article)' quasi-racist?
  15. I'd call it karma if I believed in karma. what kind of karma? your coach is a dirty cheater and ours isn't. Your karma personally, I think.
  16. The more I think about it, the more disgusted I am by that article. What disturbs me the most about it is that I know there are thousands of mouth breathers out there who were shaking their fists, saying "Yeah Steve, you tell 'em!" as they read that steaming pile.
  17. I've always been a big fan, but Kerry has moved way up my list of all-time favorite Cubs as a result of this. You just don't see this kind of loyalty to a team. If it was just about being in Chicago, he could have signed with the Sox for over twice as much.
  18. that's probably it for his career Nah, he'll be right as rain once he gets one of those adamantium treatments.
  19. Unfortunately he's still a Cub. He spent much of the second half of the season on the DL, which is why you didn't see him in August or September. also because nobody watched the games in august or september. I did. I'm also a glutton for punishment.
  20. I have a feeling Kerry was so eager to play back here again he took the first lowball offer Hendry gave, not caring about the money and wanting to end his career with the Cubs. I greatly admire that, if it is indeed the case. He might have some explaining to do to the Player's Union, though. Here's the Trib article on the signing. It's Sullivan, but it's the most write-up I've seen on it so far.
  21. Let's just go cheap and add Dernier to the roster.
  22. That, and being frozen to death.
  23. I'm struggling to find the humor in this deal, regardless if you're a douche bag White Sox fan or not That's amusing, seeing that Kenny Williams offered Kerry more than twice as much as he signed with the Cubs for.
