  1. He's a little bull. He's not going to be muscled around. He may be too short to consistently (successfully) attack the basket, but the physicality of league play won't be much of an issue, imo.
  2. Just finished watching the game. It seemed like the Illini really dictated the game, and had a strong response to every Gonzaga push. And I can't say enough how impressed I am by Leonard. Last year he was the proverbial bull in a china shop, but he's really brought his game under control. I'm amazed by what a soft touch he has developed to go with the power and athleticism. If he maintains this progress and stays another year, he's gonna be a monster. As for Maniscalco, given how well he's played against Maryland and Gonzaga, I'm not too concerned about him really dropping off when conference play starts.
  3. Yeah, if it seems like guys who were mediocre or worse players tend to make good coaches then a guy who had a legendarily bad stretch of baseball might just be a [expletive] genius. Hell, Neifi might be some kind of coaching mastermind. I forget who it was, maybe Len or Bob said it's because those are the guys who spend most of the game on the bench chatting with the coaches and managers and get a better feel for the decision making aspects of the game rather than those who are actually good at it. It makes sense, in the same way a studious but moderately talented musician or artist most often makes a better teacher than a gifted prodigy.
  4. It must be hard work hoisting Joe up on to that cross. Bernie Fine is a scumbag to be sure, but what happened with Sandusky and PSU was on a much bigger scale. No one is saying all of what happened is Joe's fault, but he has some culpability. People are just butthurt because the reputation of the saint of State College has been damaged (rightfully so).
  5. I'm not really excited about this move, but it's a good buy low, IMO. I also think this spells the end for the Cubs career of Byrd and/or Soriano.
  6. I don't think we'll go into 2012 with Soriano and Byrd manning LF and CF.
  7. Yes, the Cubs were going to spend most of their baseball budget on the draft, Bruce. That's brilliant. The Cubs were totally gonna spend $60MM+ on the amateur draft.
  8. So add Pujols, Johnson, Headley, Cespedes, Hamels, Darvish and Gio Gonzalez? That's madness. A ton of money and a ton of prospects. Also in that scenario you'd have to at least partially take into account the money the Cubs would be eating on Z and Soriano. I think Theo will try and position the Cubs to compete in 2012, but not go balls-out crazy trying to win the WS next year, especially not a the expense of half of our top 15. I think 2-3 of Pujols/Fielder, Cespedes, Darvish and Stewart/Headley would be the outer limit of what we could reasonably expect for this offseason.
  9. It's kind of sad. I used to love to hate Iowa hoops, but now they're just kind of pathetic. When I was growing up they were usually good, and it was more fun that way. My big three teams have always been Iowa basketball and football and Cubs baseball. I think what has happened to the Iowa basketball program has taken a small part of my soul from me. I used to live to see Iowa lose. Illinois-Iowa games were right up there with Cubs-Cards. Now, seeing Carver-Hawkeye half empty during the ACC/B1G challenge and the Hawks getting destroyed by a mediocre team, it makes me feel a little melancholy. Yeah, [expletive] Iowa. When (if) Iowa starts winning games again, the hate is gonna ratchet back up to blinding intensity, I'm sure. It's just more fun to kick them in the nuts when they think they're good.
  10. Yeah, seems that way. They're really good. Though I'm not sure if I'm more impressed by OSU or underwhelmed by Duke.

  13. Not much in the way of size or athleticism, but he's a bulldog. Plus he seems like he's pretty smart and composed. He's like the offensively oriented version of Chester Frazier.
  14. Leonard is going to be a beast. He's refined his a game a lot since last year. Another year and he may be a lottery pick.
  15. Headley is a safer bet, but I'd think he'll cost more in terms of prospects. I'm intrigued by Stewart, though. He has hit at every level in the minors (albeit primarily in hitter's parks), takes walks and hits for power. That said, I think there's still a good chance he never really develops into a really good ML player.
  16. If Jackson comes at 3/36 or so, I have no real problem with him - if it doesn't hinder a possible Wilson/Darvish addition. If he gets into 4 years and/or the $15 million/year range, I lose interest really fast. I'm in this spot as well. The FA SP class is pretty light this offseason, so I think it's likely Jackson will command quite a bit more than would be prudent to give him. I like Jackson, but he is an enigma of sorts. And at this stage in his career, I'm not at all confident he'll break out and become consistently really good.
  17. I don't get the Stewart comparison either. They're very different cases. I'm not high on the idea of Jackson, either. If he weren't going to command a fairly large contract, I'd think he was worth taking a shot on.
  18. This could turn out well, but it may go Hindenburg. My guess is that it goes well for a while, then the latter happens. Either way it should be entertaining.
  19. Sitting through 3-4 games like that a year is absolutely worth not playing under one the other 78 games a year. I'm thinking a retractable roof, which wouldn't be up the other 78 games of the year. If you only used it when the weather was inclement, I'd have zero problem with it. But since the Cubs aren't moving to the burbs and no one will be dropping a roof on Wrigley, it's all hypothetical anyway. And it's colder than well digger's ass at Wrigley way more than 3-4 games a year, BTW. A retractable roof doesn't just disappear when open. Really? I thought they just used a cloaking device. There's a difference between having an open roof looming on the periphery and playing under a closed roof. You can have a retractable roof and a beautiful ballpark. I'd trade Wrigley for a park like Safeco so fast it'd make your head spin.

  21. Why anyone would want to watch baseball played under a roof is beyond me. And while we're at it, I hate artificial turf as well. Well, when the alternative is extreme cold or no baseball due to rain, I'm fine with it. But it makes no sense for the Cubs. Yeah, playing under a roof isn't ideal but it's a whole lot better than sitting through a game when it's 40 degrees out and/or drizzling. But there's no way it happens, so it really doesn't matter.
  22. This is pretty unsurprising. Given the dearth of options at 3B, Stewart is certainly worth a shot.
  23. I'd be pretty surprised if Theo and co let any rumors slip on who we're legitimately interested in. They seem really secretive. I think the tendency of the new regime to not leak anything is primarily responsible for most of the "the Cubs aren't pursuing X" and "the Cubs won't be active on the X front" we've been hearing. To them, if they don't hear it's happening, it must not be happening. When Theo and Co. do strike, you're going to hear a lot of "I didn't see that coming" from quite a few "insiders".
  24. My personal sense is that the Cubs will pursue Fielder but not Pujols.
  25. Perhaps the closest thing to a "perfect" long term solution would have been AGon, but that ship has sailed. Obviously neither Pujols or Fielder are optimal, but the Cubs should absolutely pursue one or both of them.
