  1. We don't really know what we're looking at in the majors until we see how his adjustments work out at the big league level. But that's the gamble, of course. If the Cubs bring him up and he stinks even with the adjustments, he loses a lot more trade value. If he were to be included in a trade now, I'd like to see it maximized by expanding it to include more players than just he and Ross.
  2. That's overstating it. Even if he plays like he did in May (his April was good but not stellar), we're not talking about a huge WAR difference over the course of two months. It's just not a huge position of need. If he came with another year or two of control, that would be a much different story.
  3. Why? Well, another SP is almost a necessity.
  4. If Theo wants Ross, he needs to get it done. The Dodgers and Yankees are still in the market, and the options are dwindling.
  5. I pretty much agree, but I would see what it would take to land a Ross/Kimbrel/Venable package.
  6. His July has been markedly worse than his June. Sure, some of that can be chalked up to babip and the injury, but it hasn't been a good run the past couple of months. I'd want to see more an a good series before I declare him "fixed". But the bigger issue is that corner OF isn't on the top of the priority list, no should it be. Coghlan has been a 2 WAR player, too. Giving up much to potentially eke out an extra ~1 WAR over the rest of the season seems like a waste of resources when there are bigger fish to fry. Like I said, if Preller want to tack Upton onto a Ross deal for a mid-level prospect or two, great. If the ask is significant at all, you have to pass.
  7. Okay, he's been terrible for a while. He had a decent April, a good May, and he's been bad since. And he's a rental who has been rumored to not want to play for the Cubs, and a corner OF (probably a marginal upgrade over Coghlan over 2-3 months if he plays well), which we're not really in the market for. Again, I'd take him with the hope he plays like his pre-2015 self, but it shouldn't be a priority.
  8. He's a rental who has been terrible pretty much all year. It's very premature to say he's "good again" (though he might be). I'd take him for sure, but I wouldn't give up much of anything. Maybe as an addition to a Ross trade.
  9. Now you're just being cruel. someone mentioned it...like a writer but hasn't he been awful lately? Justin's been awesome lately. If by lately you mean two of the last three games, sure. He's been terrible this month.
  10. Yeah, and he's all but declared his desire to come to the Cubs. I can't believe that he would preclude that option by signing an extension.
  11. The Jays do have a lot of resources, but I think there's little chance that he doesn't test the open market.
  12. That was a steep price to pay for a three month rental.
  13. IIRC, several sources today said the Indians were trying gauge Carrasco's value, and have very little interest in trading him. Probably a "we'll deal him if we're blown away" situation.
  14. I think there's a decent chance that Theo really wants to make a run at Price in the offseason, and doesn't want to add too much payroll now.
  15. Yeah, I don't get it. Easily my favorite and most fun player to watch play baseball aside from trout. He's been fairly pedestrian this year, and pretty much the entire second half of last year. I don't hate him (or the idea of trading for him), but I would be very hesitant to give much up for him at this point. It might be buying low, but the Dodgers know that, too.
  16. Some transmissions he picked up on his fillings.
  17. 1. To be fair, he was a pumpkin several other times during his career before he signed. 2. I don't think he will, simply because the Cubs sucked bad during his tenure and so he just sort of blended in. Meanwhile, he never said or did anything wrong. But who knows? He was worth 12 fWAR over the four years prior to his signing. He had been inconsistent, but his descent into total and complete suckitude was not a likely development. And apparently he was very popular in the clubhouse, though that doesn't help the W/L record much. It'll be nice to have a useful player in that roster spot, but I have no ill will for EJax.
  18. I'm still perplexed as to why he turned into a pumpkin as soon as he signed with the Cubs. Oh well, glad to see this problem resolved. I hope this doesn't turn into another shameful Hawkins situation where he gets [expletive] on by the fans every time he visits with another team.
  19. No, not really. Many did, but there were still a lot of glaring problems, and as the article pointed out, they essentially emptied their farm system for question marks and guys who figured to be out after one year. IIRC, quite a few people were questioning whether the gains on offense would be at least partially wiped out by the ballpark and the huge downgrades defensively. And of course little was done to address the infield, which was and is an offensive disaster. I think the casual fan was probably pretty impressed by the offseason, but the flaws were pretty easy to see from the beginning of the season. Personally, I felt like the Padres' season was either going to go really well, or they were going to be bad.
  20. +1 +1 Also, I'd rather watch the MLB.tv "This game is in rain delay" screen than that show.
  21. I also endorse Schwarmachine, unless something better comes along.
  22. I'm fairly certain this had as much to do with Preller and ownership getting a manager in there that they chose as it had to do with the disappointing start.
  23. God [expletive] damn it, I wish someone would just launch that guy into the sun or something.
