That one was bad, but it wasn't monumentally bad. Not nearly as ridiculous as Rollins winning it this year, IMO. Sosa was 7th in VORP that year and a whopping 36 runs worse than McGwire. Cubs made the playoffs, Cardinals didnt? Just trying to look at it how the voters did. Obviously statistically his OBP, SLG, VORP, OPS+ were worse than Big Macs. IIRC, that was the prevailing "wisdom." Sammy had "carried" the Cubs to the playoffs and Big Mac didn't make it. Honestly, we can quote great stats all day long but I'm pretty sure very, very few of the voters look at anything beyond the basics.
