How have our recent lottery picks fared? Curry? Brand? Chandler? I'd rather make it 2 playoff appearances in a row, take our top 3 pick from New York, and in the process become a more attractive destination for veteran players who can help us now. That 2nd pick will still be reasonably high in the 1st round. I wish that wasn't the case, but vets in this league seem to favor winning ballclubs over the also-rans, more so than in the other big sports. I guess it's because they know they are going to get paid anyway. I think it's time to start focusing on bringing in legitimate veteran talent. We have alot of young guys.

There is absolutely nothing, either in our recent history or in what has already happened this Spring, that would suggest our starting pitching will remain healthy this year. I do agree substantial improvements have been made to our bullpen, and it's good to see. The "big guns," though, are showing they will miss a significant number of starts once again. AGAIN.

Neifi starts a min. of 50 games at SS. I guarantee it. He'll deserve that time if Cedeno doesn't get his stuff together. I have my doubts about Cedeno too. Hitting well for a few games before pitchers have had a chance to adjust does not mean it will turn into a career. What about hitting for 2 years against pretty good minor league competition? How do you explain NOT hitting well for any period of time turning into a career for Neifi. I don't have to. Neifi's career is a joke and everyone knows it. Hitting well against minor league pitching also does not translate into automatic success at the major league level.

I still have goodwill for Corey. I just don't think he's panning out as a baseball player, that's all. Maybe I'm wrong. -
Combined record of those teams: 74-137 (.351) Of the 3 next opponents, the worst team--Charlotte--is the one we face on the road. This week is set up very nicely for the Bulls. If they can't take care of business it's their own fault.

I like Z's passion too, but when it gets him ejected from games that doesn't help him or the team. By the way, he was ejected last year for ridiculing the home plate umpire. He has already turned his temper on the umpires. He had already left the game on opening day when he made those comments. And against St. Louis, he was about to leave that game, too. It's not like he's getting tossed a few times a season in the third inning. That makes it OK? Look, I *love* Z too. I just want him to grow up a little bit and direct his emotions better. That's all.

And I hope he drills Edmonds again. He got panned for it but I thought it was appropriate and should win his teammates affection. I remember watching that game. IIRC, Edmonds got plunked once, then hit a HR and Z was yelling at him to go around the bases quicker and then didn't Edmonds get drilled a second time? The thing that bothered me was, Zambrano is young. No matter how good your stuff is you have to earn respect to be able to yell at a veteran for trotting around the bases during a homerun. Usually when someone hits a HR off of Clemens he will make sure they run or else he's likely to throw at them. I don't have much of a problem with this because Clemens has been in the league and has been a top 10 pitcher basically his whole career. I'm not the biggest Cubs fan, just come here to post since it seems much more civil than other Cub fans I've been around. But I do think Zambrano is a terrific pitcher, his emotions may hurt him once in a while, but I think he's just super competitive which is something you want in a pitcher. I think he's terrific too, but if he continues to act like a baby when things don't go his way he's going to lose his teammates and coaches real quick. He needs to grow up a little.

If he's going to try and throw harder because he's upset then it's a problem. Exactly. Someone please show me the legions of Hall of Fame pitchers who whined when their teams failed to turn a double play, or made a fielding error.

Self destruct and put up a sub-3 era. I was thinking more along the lines of burning out early in his career and no longer being the Z we know and love......

Bottom line: there is not yet enough proof to keep Sammy out of the Hall on the basis of steroid use.

That question will be answered by his play with Baltimore. Looks like the verdict is in: .255/.288/.364 It was Corey. Time to move on. He'll be lucky if he plays in 50 games this year. I have my doubts that Patterson will ever be able to put it all together but I don't looking at his spring training numbers this so far this spring shows that much. Yes, but you know it's not just his spring training numbers from this year that counts against him. -

That's a good point. If Grace named names he would be getting killled for being a sellout. either way he can't win. Maybe it would be better if he pretended he couldn't speak English like Sammy? .......or how about he just keep his mouth shut instead? Wow, there's a novel idea. Agreed.

I'm not sure what to make of this idea. On the one hand, Barry definitely deserves to have his records expunged, but on the other hand, so do other steroid users who we don't know about yet and possibly never will. It wouldn't be acceptable to chase one guy in particular when there are dozens who are guilty. In my opinion, baseball built this mountain for themselves and now they're going to have a heck of a time climbing it. There are plenty of lawbreakers out there who are guilty but never caught. I would definitely be against emptying our prisons because we can't catch them all :) I think we should wipe Bonds & Palmiero, because we know they did it. Then continue investigating the others, see where it leads.

.500 sounds about right. 3rd or 4th place. I wish I could be more optimistic, but this baseball team needs to do something to justify that optimism such as putting together a roster that can stay healthy, hiring a manager with a clue, and either picking up more top FA or developing more & better talent in the minors.

With 12 games left, right? It's possible I suppose. We do have a home/home with Philly coming up. Upcoming schedule is Boston, Orlando, Charlotte. That's very winnable. Philly has Detroit, Indiana, Cleveland in the immediate future. Bulls need to pull it together. Any more 4 game losing streaks and its over.
