  1. I don't think the people who posed the question are the same ones who give Corey "unlimited slack". Also, some of the reason that people would prefer Corey over Jones isn't over performance, it's about age and contract. But at the same time Jacque has had a couple good seasons in the majors while Corey had half of a good season. I understand your point but at least Jacque has proven to be a decent player. He's 30, going on 31 while Corey is 26 so I see your point on that matter as well as Jones' 3 yr contract. Here's hoping Jones turns it around. Corey had a good season in '04. .266/.320./.452 with 168 strikeouts is a good season? That's a bit generous, don't you think? He was very good the first half of 2003. I do remember a couple times in 2004 where he looked like he was putting it together, but it was always a fleeting moment and he returned to the same old Corey.
  2. Yeah, unless their pitching begins shaping up they'll start to sink. The Brewers though---that might be a different story.
  3. Interesting turn of events to be sure. I was on the "miss the playoffs" bandwagon because I felt an early defeat to Detroit wouldn't be useful, but if they can miss both Detroit and Miami, well then we're talking Gotta keep it rolling though. One little slip and we could lose back all that ground.
  4. Fasano. Interesting. I don't see how we need a CB in the first round. Everyone blasts Tillman. Nobody covers Smith 1-on-1. Nobody. Put Vasher on him, same result. Tillman actually had his most productive year as a pro stats-wise. I'd *definitely* draft a corner, don't get me wrong. But not in the first round. I'd go playmaker in the 1st-----a TE or field-stretching WR. Remember, neither of our CBs were first rounders. One of them just made the pro bowl (I think Vasher was a 4th round pick!). So, why spend all that cash on a CB when you need offense? I guess I'm just perplexed why everyone is just buying into this idea so easily. We need offense much, much more than D.
  5. And I'd disagree with this statement as well...I remember being unhappy with Corey last year for taking a big swing on the first pitch he saw...even though he did hit it out...I figured we were due for 4 more at bats with big swings at first pitches...and I was right. It depends which pitch is the first pitch, and when the hitter decides first-pitch swing is the best approach. Corey's problem was he had no clue what to do at the plate, so he figured his best guess would be the first pitch. Once pitchers figured this out, they made him look silly. Other hitters know when to work the count and when to swing at the first pitch. Nobody complains when Pujols swings at the first pitch, because they know he's got a method of hitting that works. I, too was frustrated with Cory even when he succeeded on the first pitch. And it was because I knew he just happened to guess right that time. There was never a sense he was actually getting better or beginning to understand how to hit. Other than the first half of 2003, Cory had as bad an approach at the plate as I've seen.
  6. Dusty isn't really back office though. Hendry is, and he's been around for a little while now. Hasn't gained us much. MacPhail was around forever it seemed, and that pretty much netted us nothing. Now he's even further in the back office.......still nothing. It depends who you are giving the stability to.
  7. Anyone who watched yesterday's game understands how badly Mark Prior and Kerry Wood have let this organization down.
  8. These are priceless. Thanks for sharing.
  9. I'm not an expert either but I've read that roids make your muscles grow too quickly for your connective tissues such as tendons and ligaments. If you build up naturally those tissues are supposed to toughen up as your muscles grow. I think there might be a good deal of misperception out there, because I always thought it was when you stopped taking them that injuries were more prevalent. Then again, it might just be a case where each athlete reacts differently.
  10. Sorry, no such luck. The Astros have one more starter that has shown he is capable of being decent, Backe. If Pettite keeps pitching like this and Oswalt and Backe have to carry the load, and if they continue to average 1/2 a run a game, the Astros are in biiiiiig trouble. :D I *think* Oswalt can handle the load, but I'm not sure Backe will be able to continue at a high level all season long if he has to pitch with a tired bullpen every time out. That's alot of pressure on a youngun. Please God, grant us an entire season of Pettite suckage. One time! 8)
  11. There are plenty of legitimate things to gripe on Dusty for. I'm not going to start parsing his every phrase.
  12. Can we see Pettite get slaughtered again tomorrow? Oh pretty please? With sugar on top? 8)
  13. Mwahahahah!! Pettite gets SHELLACKED by the fishies!
  14. But if a SS throws the ball in the dirt on the back half of a DP and the 1B can't pick it, the SS doesn't get an error, right? How is that different than the 1B dropping it? Official scorer's discretion. Had it been an extremely close play, there probably would have been no error because you cannot assume the DP. However, if it's not a close play, it's the same as any other play where a fielder throws to him. If he drops it when, in the scorer's opinion, the out would definitely have been recorded, it is an error. OK so then did Stats Inc. change their ruling to come in line with the official scorer? Or is there a disparity?
  15. No, I don't think rubbing steroid cream on himself resulted in 73 bombs. I believe that his use of human growth hormone, cow steroids, and all kinds of other PEDs obtained through his BALCO-linked trainer Greg Anderson resulted in it, and also in his being walked a billion times since. but this is the part he has not admitted to...so if we use the previous theory we can not say we know he did this. i will also be the first to say i am positive he did all of this...and i am doubly sure about hgh because steroids do not make your head grow...growth hormone does. also to defend barry a little, he has not pulled a giambi and wasted away to nothing, he is still very big and very strong..obvioulsy he did put in a lot of work in addition to taking enhancers. the real shame is that we will never, ever know for sure how much was barry and how much was additives! People go to the gas chamber without anyone knowing for sure that they did it. We don't need to know for sure. All we need is to know beyond a reasonable doubt. And we do.
  16. It's so early on Murton, so I try to rein in my enthusiasm, but he just seems to have everything right. His approach at the plate is excellent. He seems to really study the game and work to improve. He looks like he has been working out to improve his power. I must say I'm very impressed with him right now. He could be a true Godsend for this team, bringing us from one of the worst outfields in baseball to average/passable. Please keep going as you are, Murt 8)
  17. I can understand analyzing this from a baseball strategy standpoint, and coming to the conclusion that Dusty's moves weren't the best or didn't fit the situation. But given the lead we had it's going a bit too far to crucify Dusty here. If it's a close game, and he blows it big time (which we all know will happen), then I'll take it the next step.
  18. Much as I like to criticize Dusty, this wasn't a mistake. It was a blowout. And in blowouts, you have a chance to put in bench players for vets. As for putting the pitcher in the 3rd spot......again, who cares? It was a blowout. Your logic only applies if it's a close game, and it wasn't.
  19. I would be very suprised if Z doesn't pull it together soon and start putting out 7+ innings regularly. He did this last year too. Z will settle in, and Eyre can kick his feet back and watch the fun 8)
  20. Williamson. Almost did us in. I need some Jack. But it's too early. Oh my goodness.
  21. One day we will find out how they've been cheating. I just know it.
  22. jumping out of my seat!! GET SOMEONE OUT!!
