  1. insightful post. Indeed. There's no insight to be had with this subject, so I did the best I could. Until he's back, he's injured. That's pretty much it.
  2. I have a right to cuss out the mentally handicaped kid at the grocery store for not bagging my groceries quick enough. But my right, doesn't make me less of an a-hole. I never said it didn't. People have a right to be a-holes, too. Are you suggesting we start handing out fines for people booing too early in the season? Fines? Are you kidding? I'm suggesting we don't boo because booing isn't warranted in this situation. I want Jacque Jones to succeed, and I think the best way for him to succeed is for him to not get treated like complete sh-t for making an out. I'd rather they don't boo too. But from the sound of it, they aren't listening to us
  3. KERRY WOOD UPDATE: He's still injured. Thanks.

  5. Isn't that the way it usually works? The superstar player goes 0-fer, and some benchwarming scrub has the best 3 games of his life. Yes. This goes hand-in-hand with bottom dwelling teams that come to Wrigley and look like playoff contenders, only to return to their bumbling ways once they leave town. Then after dropping 3 to them, we head off to Houston and win 2/3. :?
  6. Then the organization would be forced to bring up someone from within, and Sing would be our RFer. Are you suggesting that would be a bad thing? Because I, for one, would like to see Sing get some kind of shot at the big club.
  7. I agree it shouldn't be done this early. But fans have a right to boo. You also have a right to not like it.
  8. It's all about mopping up in the close ones. Unless we're talking about the bottom dwellers, teams will all have their share of blowouts during the year. It's always the good teams winning a high percentage of their close games, and the also-rans losing a high percentage. Plus when you get into the playoffs you have to assume every game will be close. Maybe that's why the Cards get beat in the playoffs. They don't get much experience in the close games during the year so they can't handle it when someone kicks them in the teeth in the post season (that's just wild speculation on my part).
  9. And if Detroit got hot for 5 games in the middle of July, nobody would be making such a huge deal about it. of course not, but they have justified their ranking. I don't think a hot stretch of less than 5% of the season justifies anything. For all of Detroit's hotness, they're an entire one game ahead of Cleveland. Nobody has justified their rankings yet. I am happy I started Verlander today, though. True. I think there are few folks in Detroit who are cocking their eyebrows and re-considering whether a trip to the ballpark might be a good idea this summer though. If they can keep it going, Tiger fans will at least have something to cheer about which they haven't had in forever. Cleveland looking much better since the debacle in the opener...
  10. Once again, Mariotti garners attention for himself, and therefore success as a columnist. He wins because nobody can stop talking about him.
  11. I'm not convince about the Brewers. Yes, they are 5-0, but in every game they HAD to come back to win. Playing "cardiac kids" is not a good way to win. There are some intriguing talent on that team (*Turnbow, OMG, what a friggin' stud) but I do think Brewers ultimately will falter, and finish behind the Cardinals and the Astros, as those two teams will finish behind the Cubs. Question: What WERE the Angels (or for that matter Philadelphia) thinking by letting Turnbow go? They've had to come from behind against the likes of Pittsburgh & Arizona. These two are not really the cream of the NL crop. They go on a tough 9 game RT next week & will probably get a little bit of a wake-up call. STL,NYM,HOU True. Sheets is still on the shelf though right? Fielder just had his first decent game---before that he was 0-fer. I think a case can be made there are more pitching pieces in place on the Brewers than the Reds, which is why I would buy them hanging around for longer than Cincy. Never know how it will actually shake out of course.
  12. Yes. That was a disappointing loss. They didn't even show up tonight. It wasn't Deng either. There were open shots all over the place.
  13. Cardinals players should hate Wrigley. I'd be more upset if Edmonds said "oh hell yea this is our home away from home."
  14. God, will someone please hit an open shot? Freaking 6ers don't play a lick of D and we can't take advantage.
  15. Learn to embrace your disgruntled Cub fan side... Of course, that makes you unpopular with fellow Cub fans who still sport the misplaced optimism. 8) I think it's better than drinking though.
  16. Yeah, I didn't know you could just run with the ball until you run into someone and draw a foul. The word has obviously come down from Stern to the officials: "do whatever it takes to get Iverson in to the playoffs."
  17. Brewers were winning without him. That's sort of disturbing.
  18. If you get good tix for face value, I'd be suprised. It's Wrigley & the Cards are in town.
  19. I don't think the people who posed the question are the same ones who give Corey "unlimited slack". Also, some of the reason that people would prefer Corey over Jones isn't over performance, it's about age and contract. But at the same time Jacque has had a couple good seasons in the majors while Corey had half of a good season. I understand your point but at least Jacque has proven to be a decent player. He's 30, going on 31 while Corey is 26 so I see your point on that matter as well as Jones' 3 yr contract. Here's hoping Jones turns it around. Corey had a good season in '04. .266/.320./.452 with 168 strikeouts is a good season? That's a bit generous, don't you think? He was very good the first half of 2003. I do remember a couple times in 2004 where he looked like he was putting it together, but it was always a fleeting moment and he returned to the same old Corey.
  20. Yeah, unless their pitching begins shaping up they'll start to sink. The Brewers though---that might be a different story.
  21. Interesting turn of events to be sure. I was on the "miss the playoffs" bandwagon because I felt an early defeat to Detroit wouldn't be useful, but if they can miss both Detroit and Miami, well then we're talking Gotta keep it rolling though. One little slip and we could lose back all that ground.
  22. Fasano. Interesting. I don't see how we need a CB in the first round. Everyone blasts Tillman. Nobody covers Smith 1-on-1. Nobody. Put Vasher on him, same result. Tillman actually had his most productive year as a pro stats-wise. I'd *definitely* draft a corner, don't get me wrong. But not in the first round. I'd go playmaker in the 1st-----a TE or field-stretching WR. Remember, neither of our CBs were first rounders. One of them just made the pro bowl (I think Vasher was a 4th round pick!). So, why spend all that cash on a CB when you need offense? I guess I'm just perplexed why everyone is just buying into this idea so easily. We need offense much, much more than D.
  23. And I'd disagree with this statement as well...I remember being unhappy with Corey last year for taking a big swing on the first pitch he saw...even though he did hit it out...I figured we were due for 4 more at bats with big swings at first pitches...and I was right. It depends which pitch is the first pitch, and when the hitter decides first-pitch swing is the best approach. Corey's problem was he had no clue what to do at the plate, so he figured his best guess would be the first pitch. Once pitchers figured this out, they made him look silly. Other hitters know when to work the count and when to swing at the first pitch. Nobody complains when Pujols swings at the first pitch, because they know he's got a method of hitting that works. I, too was frustrated with Cory even when he succeeded on the first pitch. And it was because I knew he just happened to guess right that time. There was never a sense he was actually getting better or beginning to understand how to hit. Other than the first half of 2003, Cory had as bad an approach at the plate as I've seen.
  24. Dusty isn't really back office though. Hendry is, and he's been around for a little while now. Hasn't gained us much. MacPhail was around forever it seemed, and that pretty much netted us nothing. Now he's even further in the back office.......still nothing. It depends who you are giving the stability to.
