  1. Ahhhh, but silence can say so much. Instead though, Hendry chooses to publicly endorse Baker again and again. And let's not forget it's way past time when most other managers would have gotten the axe. My vote is: Hendry means every word of it. And we're stuck with Baker for the rest of the season, and perhaps beyond.
  2. The '06 Cubs: wallowing in the belly of badness.
  3. The mass sucking continues.... sucking and sucking and sucking and sucking and sucking and sucking and sucking and sucking and sucking and sucking and sucking and sucking and sucking and sucking and sucking and sucking and sucking and sucking and sucking and sucking and sucking and sucking and sucking and sucking and sucking and sucking and sucking and sucking and sucking and sucking and sucking and sucking and sucking and sucking and sucking and sucking and sucking and sucking and sucking and sucking and sucking and sucking and sucking and sucking and sucking and sucking and sucking and sucking and sucking and sucking and sucking and sucking and sucking and sucking and sucking and sucking and sucking and sucking and sucking and sucking and sucking and sucking and sucking and sucking and sucking and sucking and sucking and sucking and sucking and sucking and sucking and sucking and sucking and sucking and sucking and sucking and sucking and sucking and sucking and sucking and sucking and sucking and sucking and sucking and.....and...................more sucking. God must hate us. Or maybe Satan sent Hendry & Baker to torment us and there's nothing God can do about it!! SAVE US FROM THIS INSANITY!! OH LORDY!
  4. I saw one of those when I went to Wrigley on the last homestand. Between a guy and a girl. Baker not only destroys baseball teams, but also marriages. He kills puppies too.
  5. Read it and weep... http://chicago.cubs.mlb.com/NASApp/mlb/news/article.jsp?ymd=20060627&content_id=1526163&vkey=news_chc&fext=.jsp&c_id=chc It's like banging your head against a brick wall listening to these bozos. And people think *BUSH* doesn't get it?!? Bush has NOTHING on Hendry and Baker.
  6. Sadly, not enough fans remain to boo as this team deserves.
  7. Pwahahaha. yeaaugh. that's the way to play 'em. winning? we don't need no stinkin' winning.
  8. Gammons is great---he's a BoSox fan and he can't help it. He's only doing what every fan would do for their team if they were in his position. And he still knows a ton about the rest of the league. He's a giant in the business of baseball journalism. I hope he gets well very, very soon.
  9. Well---I guess we'll have to agree to disagree on it then. I turn a very skeptical eye to what I consider to be the hysteria of an approaching draft and what it does to players and their value. I'd go with the original ranking, which is based off a much larger body of work---pretty much his entire young career as a player, rather than the spurt, which is based on supposed "enlightenment" which occurs right before a draft. I've seen these things happen quite a bit, and because of my perception on it, I believe Colvin is a huge reach. The articles I quoted earlier are from some folks who I believe are doing the same thing: disregarding the momentary hysteria of the draft in favor of what they consider to be the true, earlier assessment of the player. It's like when you get into a court room with a witness who suddenly changes his/her testimony. Do you just believe the brand new stuff in the heat of the moment? Not me---I tend to go with what was solidified during much, much cooler times. That said, it's about opinions and I really do hope Colvin works out. I don't want anyone to think I'll be rooting against him or something. Far from it.
  10. I don't call this "rooting against the team" though. Realizing changes need to be made and hoping they happen is really just looking out for the best interests of the team. Too bad Hendry and MacFailure can't see it, but that doesn't mean the fans should blindly root for a .500 ballclub and a Dusty extension that would most certainly only extend the misery of the fans. Rooting for the Cubs to lose right now is, in a very tangible way, rooting for the club to ultimately win.
  11. Bob scored a few points with me when he did that. I hope he doesn't stop doing it, when it's called for----and I certainly hope McF.A.I.L. hasn't decided to have a little "talk" with him about it.
  12. Vernon Wells? That was 9 years ago!! Plus, all this talk of Colvin "shooting up" the draft boards. Not sure I buy into the validity of that. I know it happens, don't get me wrong. But it has been my observation over the years----not just in baseball but in any draft----that these late-cycle jumps in draft position are something that should be taken with a grain of salt. Here's a good example: Michael Haynes. Nobody thought he would be much more than a very late 1st rounder, more likely 2nd rounder in the NFL draft. But---he has a dominant senior bowl, and suddenly he's shooting up the draft boards. So the Bears take him at 14. But you know what? Ultimately the original value that was placed on him was probably the right one, because we found out in fairly short order that his talent level just wasn't upper-half 1st round. I would tend to go with the original ranking of 170, rather than buy into a late surge up to as high as perhaps 30 on Colvin.
  13. I like the Indians too. But I'm definitely rooting for the Tigers this year. Not just because they're the chief rival for the Sox, but also because I think it's a pretty good story, and I know a couple guys at work who are going absolutely bazonkers right now over them.
  14. I think it has to do with his track record for producing major league talent. He had 12 straight 1st round picks make it to the bigs. That's pretty darn impressive. Guys reaching the bigs is nice and all, but that doesn't win championships. You need to draft impact players. That does seem like a pretty low standard to me as well. So I guess if Neifi had been picked in the 1st round we could chalk up another big success to Mr. Wilkin.
  15. Heck with the horses. Give me that $4million salary. For just one year. :P
  16. Look, Jim Callis mentioned he prolly wouldn't take Colvin at 13, but then that is still based on opinion. Yes...Colvin was a stretch at 13, but NOT, I repeat NOT an outreagous reach as some are overblowing. So, I trust Tim Wilken ability to judge talent, and if he believe Tyler Colvin is worth the gamble at 13, then WHO is anybody to argue with him. That's pretty funny. The guy admits they had Colvin picked 170th, then goes on to basically say BA's rankings mean nothing. Perhaps Callis ought to recommend a change in the way they do their rankings then? And he still says it's a reach, but not an extreme one. I disagree. And there was no reason for the Cubs to make this kind of a high-gamble pick with literally a ton of other, less risky picks waiting on the boards. 143 of them, to be exact. By BA's own count, that is. As for trusting Wilkin---not sure why a guy who hasn't had a single position player come out of his minor league system to make the All-Star team for his club becomes sacrosanct, but I'm not buying it. Certainly not because Callis thinks so, you can bet on that. Show me an All-Star position player who was drafted and came up through our system to play for the CUBS, and I'll start taking Mr. Wilken's reaches on "faith." Not before.
  17. That's really the point. Sure, there's plenty of blame to go around. But it's pretty clear Baker looked at the injuries and just decided he can't win. He packed it in without really even trying this year. If that's all it takes to earn $4mil/yr, then someone show me where to sign up.
  18. This thread is awesome. Roast: that kittens thing is freaking hilarious. 8)
  19. Done. End. Finito. Even the Marlins, with far less payroll and a cavalcade of youngsters, outperform the Cubs pretty much every day of the week. That's on BAKER. Nobody else. BAKER. He needs to be fired. Go back to Cali. Have a breather, sip a few drinks. But manage the Cubs? No mo'
  20. :-k We do? Anyhow, it's the manager's job to get the most from whoever he's putting out there, and clearly Baker hasn't come close to doing that.
  21. Don't misunderstand me. I'm not saying we should write Colvin off. But as an appropriate #13 pick? No way. As for Wilkin: I'm not seeing the track record that makes his decisions beyond contestation. Not saying he's terrible, but I'll certainly argue this pick was a reach all day and twice on Sunday.
  22. Yes. No matter how you slice it drafting Colvin was pretty much a waste. Wow. I understand we reached for him, but give the kid a couple years before you call him a "waste." Agreed. He was STILL considered a 1st rd guy. So, if for nothing else, he went about 15 picks before he should have gone. But Tyler Colvin, will be a very good player for the Cubs. Not even close. Who told you this? He was ranked 170th by BA, well outside the first few rounds. Here, read this: http://msn.foxsports.com/mlb/story/5713564 Or this: http://chicagosports.chicagotribune.com/sports/baseball/cubs/cs-060607cubsdraftsep,1,2979325.story?coll=cs-cubs-headlines This was a reach of the most extreme variety. There can't even be an argument about this. Seriously man, this pick just shows what a complete mess the Cubs are as a franchise. They're treading water in a sea of poor decisions and bad information.
  23. The Cubs have lost the right to be given the benefit of the doubt. There wasn't a single person on the planet who had Colvin anywhere *NEAR* 13. This is an extreme reach of a pick, there's just no question about it. Even the kid can't believe it---he knew, as well. If he does work out, which I nevertheless hope he does, it won't be because it was a solid pick at that position.
