  1. I like the Indians too. But I'm definitely rooting for the Tigers this year. Not just because they're the chief rival for the Sox, but also because I think it's a pretty good story, and I know a couple guys at work who are going absolutely bazonkers right now over them.
  2. I think it has to do with his track record for producing major league talent. He had 12 straight 1st round picks make it to the bigs. That's pretty darn impressive. Guys reaching the bigs is nice and all, but that doesn't win championships. You need to draft impact players. That does seem like a pretty low standard to me as well. So I guess if Neifi had been picked in the 1st round we could chalk up another big success to Mr. Wilkin.
  3. Heck with the horses. Give me that $4million salary. For just one year. :P
  4. Look, Jim Callis mentioned he prolly wouldn't take Colvin at 13, but then that is still based on opinion. Yes...Colvin was a stretch at 13, but NOT, I repeat NOT an outreagous reach as some are overblowing. So, I trust Tim Wilken ability to judge talent, and if he believe Tyler Colvin is worth the gamble at 13, then WHO is anybody to argue with him. That's pretty funny. The guy admits they had Colvin picked 170th, then goes on to basically say BA's rankings mean nothing. Perhaps Callis ought to recommend a change in the way they do their rankings then? And he still says it's a reach, but not an extreme one. I disagree. And there was no reason for the Cubs to make this kind of a high-gamble pick with literally a ton of other, less risky picks waiting on the boards. 143 of them, to be exact. By BA's own count, that is. As for trusting Wilkin---not sure why a guy who hasn't had a single position player come out of his minor league system to make the All-Star team for his club becomes sacrosanct, but I'm not buying it. Certainly not because Callis thinks so, you can bet on that. Show me an All-Star position player who was drafted and came up through our system to play for the CUBS, and I'll start taking Mr. Wilken's reaches on "faith." Not before.
  5. That's really the point. Sure, there's plenty of blame to go around. But it's pretty clear Baker looked at the injuries and just decided he can't win. He packed it in without really even trying this year. If that's all it takes to earn $4mil/yr, then someone show me where to sign up.
  6. This thread is awesome. Roast: that kittens thing is freaking hilarious. 8)
  7. Done. End. Finito. Even the Marlins, with far less payroll and a cavalcade of youngsters, outperform the Cubs pretty much every day of the week. That's on BAKER. Nobody else. BAKER. He needs to be fired. Go back to Cali. Have a breather, sip a few drinks. But manage the Cubs? No mo'
  8. :-k We do? Anyhow, it's the manager's job to get the most from whoever he's putting out there, and clearly Baker hasn't come close to doing that.
  9. Don't misunderstand me. I'm not saying we should write Colvin off. But as an appropriate #13 pick? No way. As for Wilkin: I'm not seeing the track record that makes his decisions beyond contestation. Not saying he's terrible, but I'll certainly argue this pick was a reach all day and twice on Sunday.
  10. Yes. No matter how you slice it drafting Colvin was pretty much a waste. Wow. I understand we reached for him, but give the kid a couple years before you call him a "waste." Agreed. He was STILL considered a 1st rd guy. So, if for nothing else, he went about 15 picks before he should have gone. But Tyler Colvin, will be a very good player for the Cubs. Not even close. Who told you this? He was ranked 170th by BA, well outside the first few rounds. Here, read this: http://msn.foxsports.com/mlb/story/5713564 Or this: http://chicagosports.chicagotribune.com/sports/baseball/cubs/cs-060607cubsdraftsep,1,2979325.story?coll=cs-cubs-headlines This was a reach of the most extreme variety. There can't even be an argument about this. Seriously man, this pick just shows what a complete mess the Cubs are as a franchise. They're treading water in a sea of poor decisions and bad information.
  11. The Cubs have lost the right to be given the benefit of the doubt. There wasn't a single person on the planet who had Colvin anywhere *NEAR* 13. This is an extreme reach of a pick, there's just no question about it. Even the kid can't believe it---he knew, as well. If he does work out, which I nevertheless hope he does, it won't be because it was a solid pick at that position.
  12. Len's a great guy. 8) But uh, how embarrassing is it that the play-by-play guy feels the need to apologize for the team? Hah. Silly me, I thought that was Hendry's job! Ask for a raise Len. Bob too.
  13. bynum to the DL must be the 25-man move to bring lee back. It is. Confirmed on the telecast today. At least Murton is staying in the majors. Whether he stays in the starting lineup remains to be seen; there's talk of Nevin starting in LF. If the Cubs were contending this year that might be a good move because of Nevin's power, but since they aren't contending you do NOT start a player with no future over one who may have a future. Unless you're Dusty, that is. :x Of course Hendry could sign Nevin to a two year contact. Then he would have a future. Why stop at two years? :DGood point! Lets give him 5! :? I also heard Nevin is likely to start in LF today. Has Murt officially been sent back down? Or is this more of a platoon now?
  14. Yes, we are a bastion of overall suckage this year. Bad teams are still bad at home. Unfortunately even the fans and Murphy's and yes even HiTops can't drag a little performance out of this group. You'd think with all those nice lookin' ladies wearing pink Cubbie hats, it would inspire some semblance of decent baseball from these guys. But alas, no----the badness simply continues...
  15. Why don't you look at some of those other stats, compare them to other pitchers, and then tell me Kerry Wood only had 1 good game? I think a lot of his hype is based solely on that one game. Sure he had some good outings in his career (even Rusch has the occasional good day), but I don't think he is the elite MLB pitcher that his salary suggests. Wait. Remind me when Rusch dominated one of the hottest hitting teams in the majors twice in the playoffs again? I think I missed it.
  16. It hasn't translated into a high number of wins for Z either. Are you saying he's overrated too?
  17. Len & Bob were even eluding to it last night. It appears there are more than just some nsbb members who are suspicious the Cubs might be rushing Lee back. Or even that Lee might be rushing himself back. They better hope and pray it turns out O.K.
  18. Actually, in Prior and Lee's case, I would hope the BALLCLUB realizes the season is over, therefore don't rush them back in any way shape or form. '06 is trashed, so I want my best players strapping and ready to go come '07. Rushing Lee or Prior back just makes no sense right now, and it shouldn't have anything to do with the players. In Woody's case I'm not sure he will ever be back, certainly in a Cub uni. So that's a bit different. And you have to remember: Wood's in a contract year. There's no way he's being lazy unless he gets off on throwing millions of dollars down the drain. Highly doubtful.
  19. I'm glad you're still able to have fun with this, Scott. I admit it: I'm pretty miserable right now over the whole thing. I mean, sure I predicted the Cubs would miss the playoffs and all. But I had no idea we'd be sitting in mid June with 80+ games left of playoff-implication-less baseball to look forward to. And the injuries, and Woody..... I thought we'd hang around longer than this. There's really just a few things left to care about. Sox series, deadline, hopefully a managerial change, Cards games. That's not a whole lot when you think about it.
  20. Pretty much how I feel. I wish he would have rectified his problems. The future seemed so bright after 03'. Now it looks like curtains. Poor Woody. Gonna miss him. God what happened to this team...... Reading that SunTimes story this morning was the saddest news I've seen yet this season. It feels like the end of an era. Contrary to some posts I've seen in this thread, Kerry NEVER struck me as a bad attitude ... just the opposite: a very likeable, conscientious, old-school baseball player. Likeable? Definitely. I do wish he would have changed his delivery much earlier, though. But that's all water under the bridge now. I will say it's kind of hard to tell a guy who has achieved a level of greatness that he needs to change. The tendency is to continue doing what got you the success in the first place.
  21. Well, there's the obvious ones: 1. Derek Lee with a major injury. Impossible to predict it. 2. Pierre the bastion of suckage that he is. I mean we knew he wasn't incredible, but this bad? No way. 3. Ramirez with the crappiness. This kind of ties into the Lee injury I think, but I still expected more. And then there are some others: 4. Maddux with the incredible April, then the slowdown---pretty much the exact opposite of other seasons. 5. I wouldn't have guessed Prior would just be coming back now. I thought it was going to be mid-May. 6. Marmol & Marshall: two young guns with some promise. Gooz: young gun faltering. I would have picked it the other way around :) 7. Jones catching his wind. After that brutal start, I'm surprised. Good for him. 8. Howry not all that great: seems like he struggles a bit too much for a guy who was supposed to be so solid. I realize his numbers say otherwise, I'm just going on observation. He seems to struggle whenever I watch him.
  22. I can relate. I expect to win the Powerball every Wednesday and Saturday. The Cubs chances of getting to 500 are about the same as my odds of winning that jackpot. In fact, my odds may be a little better. I started this thread to point out the date that .500 could be achieved if just winning the up coming series, not every game for 16 games. Right now if we win tomorrow we win the Cleveland series on the way to Minnisota. Just a series win after series win will get us there by Aug 2nd. It's not likely but possible. Just saying. I hear ya. I'm reserving my optimism more for next season at this point though. Kinda waiting to see if there will be any kind of shakeup in the management of this club, and also waiting to see if Hendry can do anything positive at the deadline. Right now I'm not sure how positive it would really be to get back to .500. It doesn't accomplish anything for this year, and it greatly increases the chance Baker will be back----which to me isn't all that great a proposition.
  23. Too sad. If this is indeed the absolute end for Kerry, then as with Sosa I will remember the good times. The 20 K performance vs. Houston. The 2 dominating starts against Atlanta in the playoffs. Listening to Chipper Jones saying "we're trying to solve the mystery that is Kerry Wood," and knowing that they can't. Damn.
  24. Had to happen eventually, but geez what a run, especially in the latter years after they broke up the Smoltz/Glavine/Maddux tandem. They've been winning that division with much lesser lineups recently. A true testament to the organization and Bobby Cox. Not that I don't want a new top dog over there. It will be nice to see someone else win it for a change. An NL playoffs with no Atlanta will be refreshing.
  25. Hendry's going to let Baker manage. Not because he wants to see what happens with Lee back or any of that jazz. ....because he genuinely thinks Baker is a great manager.
