  1. yeah, but he's much more patient. I do like Brady---he's gritty and comes to play every day. His defense looked to me to be very good. But as the SLG indicates, he's a singles hitter Who cares??? If a guy can get on base, that's 90% of the battle. There's enough power in the lineup from the corner IF, C, and the projected LF. Honestly, when are people going to stop falling in love with bashers who K more than they reach base? :steps off soapbox: I don't know. When are people going to stop taking one comment and flying off the handle because of it?
  2. Not necessarily my own view, fwiw. Who wrote that? I would also like to know. Aren't 3 of the best closers in history Eckersley, Lee Smith, and Eric Gagne? 3 Americans?
  3. And the Cubs already had 8 candidates for the back of the rotation with similar ZIPS projections: http://www.baseballthinkfactory.org/files/oracle/discussion/cubs_signed_marquis/ Do we have any figures that ZiPS is an accurate predictor?
  4. They were thinking that mediocre veteran pitchers are worth more than unproven prospects, which, interestingly enough, seems to be the way the baseball world is thinking now. Thankfully, Hendry has only been acquiring that type of pitcher via the free agent market. Before the offseason got too deep in moves, I was kind of looking forward to what the Dodgers would be like next year with a line up of: Furcal Ethier Nomar Kent Loney Martin Kemp Betemit Now, it's looking more like: Furcal Pierre Nomar Kent Gonzalez Ethier Martin/Lieberthal Betemit I wonder how much better they think their new line up is? They think it's much better. So do all the national talking-heads, who are proclaiming that the Dodgers have had the best offseason and could be the team to beat in the NL.
  5. Now we know why Hendry couldn't land Jennings. Rockies were looking for a sucker, and they found the Stros. We also now know the Stros are desperate to the point that they've lost all sense of reality.
  6. Man! When those goals came, they came quick! Havlat/Bondra accounting for 2/3 goals last night. Finally some good personnel moves.
  7. Packers are playing the Lions @ noon, and I'm heading deep, deep into Packerland for a Christmas gathering this weekend. I'M NOT GOING TO BE ABLE TO CATCH THE GAME!!! :x the horror.....
  8. He'd be stupid not to take it. No he wouldn't. He could still get more on the open market. He could have his choice of the team he wants to play for. He could get out of Canada. I wouldn't take the deal at this point. Worst case scenario, he gets severely injured and gets a 1-year deal for a ton of money and gets his shot as a FA after 2008. Yes, he most certainly would be stupid not to take it. The minimal amount more he MIGHT be able to get on the open market is just not worth the risk of something happening to him on a permanent level. These, as we all know, are guaranteed money contracts. He'd be crazy to turn down that kind of money that is most certainly at least very close (I think above) his market level. Unless he REALLY hates Toronto, there is no sane reason to turn down that deal. ...unless the deal doesn't really exist.
  9. I think Pagan/Pie is a disaster if it happens. Who cares about long term? Let's just get someone who can get on base. I see no reason why Brady Clark couldn't fill that bill for a year or two. Pie will struggle at the plate once pitchers figure out his weaknesses. Pagan is a utility player at best. Come on, we're talking about a 7-8-9 of Pie, Izzy, and P. On days where Barrett rests, it's Blanco, Pie, Izzy, P. Talk about black holes.
  10. only problem I have with that article is he doesn't lump in Fox, especially Joe Buck, for being the original and most persistant windbags in this whole affair. So true. Buck was doing the same with Eli on Sunday. All he ever does is harp on the same thing over and over and over over the course of a telecast. Man, they focused those cameras on Plaxico and Shockey the whole time, just waiting for reaction shots. They sure did. The transformation of sports from athletic competition to soap opera has been disappointing to witness. I can't figure out if Joe Buck or Bryant Gumbel is worse. Only Tirico and Michaels still have enough self-respect to simply call the ball game instead of going for the ratings by player-bashing.
  11. It's the silly season. Bruce, One question. Do you know if the Cubs have any interest in upgrading at either SS (Izturis) or 2nd (DeRosa/Theriot)? There is a rumor that Marcus Giles might be non-tendered. The Cubs will not look into Marcus Giles if he's non-tendered. They're happy with their infield, as you heard Mr. Hendry say. I kind of figured that. Thanks Bruce! Well that really sucks. Thanks anyway though, LOL.
  12. More than likely they will attempt to kick it to the opposiite site of the field that Hester is on, or kick it to the up man, like when a half is about to end. They can try to kick it away from him, and I'm sure they will, but ultimately on kickoffs they're going to have to kick it deep most of the time. Otherwise the Bears will have the ball at the 40-45 every possession, which will pin their offense deep all game. There's really not a guaranteed way to stop a KR/PR from getting the ball.
  13. I was wondering the same thing. I thought he was supposed to be signed by Monday? I'm also suprised this thing hasn't been confirmed yet.
  14. Please forget about any notions of DeRosa and just sign Giles, Jim. Thanks. Call me if you have any further questions.
  15. Then according to Chris Carpenter's "past performances", http://www.baseball-reference.com/c/carpech01.shtml he would had continue to be a talented, but crappy pitchers. "Past performances" is not the best predictor, because doesn't take into account different variables. It's a definition. You cannot predict by things that have not happened yet. I think what you mean is that there are things beyond stats that can be used to predict, but those are most assuredly still past performance. There is quite literally nothing aside from past performance and wholely irrational beliefs that can be used to predict future performance upside? tools? makeup? what do your base them on? your crazy imagination, or his past performance? What if you're a scout, and a guy has great past numbers, but you go out and see him play somewhere and talk to him and it becomes painfully obvious the man has suffered a mental collapse? Do you still sign him because of his past performance? Or let's say there's a guy who has been pretty mediocre all his minor league career, and you visit him, ask him to get an eye test and he comes back with 20/200 vision? Do you write him off because of past performance?
  16. No, actually I'm not nauseated by it. I would be if I didn't think they're legit. But I do. That was a huge road win Sunday. NO is definitely a legitimate contender.
  17. I'd be fine if he sat out again. TB isn't going to be a passing threat. The Bears are going to get to Gradkowski and cause more turnovers this week. Agreed. St. Louis was the last challenging game on our schedule. Let Vasher get to 100%. Personally, I wouldn't mind seeing Hester get a few more snaps at nickel back to begin developing him a little bit. It has become painfully obvious how thin our CB corps are. One injury and we're doing crazy stuff like attempting to have Hillenmeyer cover in nickel situations. No good. Get Hester some experience these last 3 games.
  18. I was wrong about this game. Well---what I thought would happen, happened but only in the first half. After that, I completely underestimated that Rex would continue to make great check-downs, that Turner would call a very, very good game (SCREEN PASSES!!!!! :D :D ) and of course that Devin Hester would just take the Rams over his knee and spank them like a group of schoolgirls 8-) People are making a big deal over the Rams scoring 27 points. The last touchdown was against a prevent, and they racked up alot of yards just throwing short passes while our defenders were simply playing "no big plays." But yea, the defense looked predictably less effective. You can't lose 2 pro bowlers in one week and suffer no effects.
  19. Great play by Tillman. He's having a solid year to date.
  20. Honestly unless we win the NFC championship those defensive stats mean nothing. I know. Actually, maybe some more teams will underestimate us because of it.
  21. What sucks is all this garbage time yardage is really going to hurt the Bears Defensive stats.
  22. Hit him too high: penalty. Hit him too low: penalty. Except if the refs don't feel like it. Gotta love these rules! :x
  23. Game's over, so now the refs decide there's no reason to let the holding go anymore.
  24. Linehan's a PUNK. Whip the passing game back out. You wanna play punk? Let's play.
  25. is that sarcasm? He hit the hell out of his head. No its not sarcasm. He hit him in the shoulder his helmet didnt touch the Rams WR helmet. You must've missed the replay then. No the first replays they showed I thought he hit him in the helmet. But when they showed the side view it showed he didnt touch his helmet. Agreed. Side view showed it never actually made contact. But he did still lead with the head.
