  1. Right, which is one reason why Hill is very likely to be better than Brenly in the majors. I was just pointing out that citing Brenly's AA OPS through a month and a half isn't especially meaningful, especially when the guy you're comparing him to is 33 and was having nearly as horrid a start to the year as Brenly was. Hill is a better option than Brenly, but there's a lot more reasons why than Brenly's poor AA OPS only.
  2. Not that I'm arguing we should have called up Brenly or anything, but: Koyie Hill this season: .591 OPS in AA Mike Brenly this season: .561 OPS in AA In all honesty, I have no problem with this move. I'm not happy that Koyie is back, but for a stopgap who will only be around for a week or two and a team that isn't close to contending, the primary motivation should be giving up as little as possible in terms of assets. That's exactly what Hoyer did.
  3. Yeah, I don't think Clemson/Ga Tech/Louisville make any sense for the SEC. You expand to get more exposure in areas you aren't currently in. None of those three teams offer that. If the SEC could simply choose a school to add, I think it'd be Virginia Tech. FSU is such a national brand, though, that I think the SEC would have interest there.
  4. sosa>sandberg>wood>ramirez>lee>roberson>grace Completely forgot Ryno's number hadn't been retired yet.
  5. On taking players out of the game: http://espn.go.com/nba/truehoop/miamiheat/story/_/id/7948934/miami-marlins-ozzie-guillen-miami-heat-dwyane-wade-guarantee-fight I love Ozzie.
  6. Wood and Sosa need to have their numbers retired. I'd think about Grace and DLee, but ultimately I don't think they're that close.
  7. I get Os/Nats instead...... At least it's more interesting than Boston/Philly.
  8. Wood's one of my all-time favorite Cubs. I'll miss him. I'll always remember Harry and Steve talking anxiously in '97 (I think) about the Cubs' big 2 pitching prospects - Kerry Wood and Steve Rain.
  9. Ed Reed is "not 100%" committed to playing football in 2012. He may retire. Suggs and Reed might both unexpectedly be off that defense. That'd be a major hit.
  10. This all feels very familiar. Unlike with Vitters/Lake (I assume that's who you're referring to), though, we have the Theo regime working with Baez from the start. That's a pretty major positive.
  11. I was a big Chen fan in the offseason. I don't really have a problem with Maholm, though I still kind of wish we'd have gone with Chen over him. Still early, though.
  12. The social anxiety concerns me a lot with Greinke. Plus, I don't like giving mega deals to pitchers that will last through most of their 30s and with or without the anxiety, Greinke may get a mega deal.
  13. That's a good question and one I'm not certain of the answer to. I'm thinking he was considered a very good defender coming up through the minors, which would indicate it's not all Maddon. But even if that's the case, signing Upton and having BJax ready to replace DeJesus (or just trading DeJesus if we can get a good deal) would be fine by me as well. Or there's always trading LaHair and having BJax/Upton/DeJesus but that's a bit power-lacking and I'm getting less convinced all the time that LaHair isn't for real.
  14. Very good defensively and very good at stealing bases. Decent offensively as well, especially for a CF, and he's a 4 or so WAR guy a year. That's very valuable.
  15. Anybody have his e-mail? Maybe the purple shirt guy does?
  16. Again, it's all rumor and speculation at this point, but this was in a post you responded to on page 2:
  17. Personally, I still don't even think he's going to hit FA. Everything is just speculation at this point, but given that Pujols got 10 years and Prince got 9, it wouldn't surprise me in the least if Hamels got 7-8.
  18. And the facts in your article state that a pitcher gets more likely to get hurt as he ages after 24 and the likelihood is above 15% each season for his entire 30s. That's a very significant risk when you're paying a guy $23-25+ million every year for 7-8 years. There was also this from the guys who did the study: Pitchers are significant injury risks.
  19. Now we're parsing words and that's a pointless discussion. Not to mention it'd make others in this thread mad. Of course you do your homework, I'm not sure anyone would ever argue against that. But it doesn't matter how much homework you do, there's still a very high chance that a pitcher moving through his 30s is going to have arm problems. It's a much safer proposition to spend big in FA on hitters and that's what I'd prefer to do.
  20. Are you aware of the evil you're about to bring upon this thread? Somebody was going to eventually, figured I'd get it out of the way.
  21. davell's numbers in the OP showed that the Cubs would have around $40 million to spend this offseason without really increasing payroll. I tend to think we'd be bargain bin shopping the rest of the offseason if we grabbed Hamels/Upton. It really depends on why they dropped payroll this past offseason.
  22. Just think, Theo signing Hamilton would make up for Hendry's awful mistake of trading Hamilton away for nothing.
