  1. The Packers have finally filled their vacant DC role. Apparently, the info was wrong about Dom Capers to the Giants.
  2. yes, but al davis wasn't completely senile back then. Always a good point.
  3. The Jets have apparently found their new coach and the Raiders may be closing in on one. Al Davis has fallen for Don Martindale, Oakland's LB coach who was interviewing for the DC position. Instead, Davis apparently now has interest in him as head coach. Interestingly, the last time Al Davis promoted a LB coach to head coach it worked out pretty well - that coach was John Madden. The Jets, reportedly, have decided on Ravens DC Rex Ryan. I'd think the announcement will be made sometime Monday.
  4. I wouldn't be suprised if Notre Dame bought out tubby, and made a move. I would They probably want Urban Meyer. Weis will likely last this year and then the Irish will make another run at Meyer. Why would Meyer want to go their? He is at a better program now, and Florida can probably match what anybody else is offering. Yet, Urban Meyer has called Notre Dame his "dream job" TWICE. Even if Urban Meyer does decide to leave UF after Tebow's SR yr, Florida won't be hurting for a replacement. As long as they don't find another Ron Zook, UF could live without Meyer, to be honest. So yeah, I do believe Urban Meyer will be at Notre Dame within two yrs. If Weis can win 10-11 games this year, I don't necessarily think he'll be gone. If the rumors are true, though, and Meyer is looking to head to ND once Tebow's gone, ND may be pressured into making a move, though.
  5. I wouldn't be suprised if Notre Dame bought out tubby, and made a move. I would They probably want Urban Meyer. Weis will likely last this year and then the Irish will make another run at Meyer. what if Notre Dame goes 8-4 next year? 9-3? 8-4 is a guaranteed firing for Weis and 9-3 might be. If ND has a great year, though, I think they'll keep Weis. I'm assuming, though, that 9-3 is the top end of what Weis will do and I think they'll try to pry Meyer away from UF at that point. why is it a guaranteed firing? it's a 2 game improvement on last year and continued upward trend They made a bigger improvement over the past year than that and the overarching sentiment was that he should be fired. Three wins two years ago to seven last year (including the bowl) and he was almost fired. Notre Dame fans (for the most part, many on this board are an exception) tend to be on the side of ridiculous expectations. I just don't see them being satisfied - even if they should - by incremental improvement. If they were, Weis' job would not have been in grave danger this year.

He wanted to go to Notre Dame the year he left Utah. I don't know if he'd leave Florida now, but he doesn't hide the fact that he'd like to coach at ND one day.

  9. Yep, I scooped you about six posts back. :D Raheem Morris, who was Hofstra's defensive backs coach just eight years ago and has never been a DC in the NFL, is now the head coach in Tampa Bay.
  10. Damn it. The established DC candidates are beginning to dwindle some. There are still openings in Dallas, GB, Tennessee, Detroit and New York - plus the teams who haven't hired coaches yet (Jets, Oak).
  11. To replace Spags as DC, the Giants appear to be focusing on Dom Capers.
  12. This certainly didn't take long. The Bucs have decided on their new head coach and GM. (Hint - it's not Mike Shanahan) Fire a coach who led you to a Super Bowl and promote a coach who's never been a coordinator in the NFL? Interesting is the nicest thing I can say here. They better really, really like Morris.
  13. Yeah, this is a weird time to fire a coach They may not have been considering any of these guys, but Jim Schwartz, Josh McDaniels and now (possibly) Jason Garrett are all off the table. You're right, it's odd.
  14. I heard that they may name their coach today. May not be til tomorrow at this point, but there may be something to the rumors you're hearing.
  15. Here's a shocker. The Bucs have fired Jon Gruden and GM Bruce Allen. Never saw this one coming. Probably more surprising - especially at this point - than the Shanahan firing.
  16. They may, but then you wonder will the replacement - and the subsequent loss of ability to upgrade elsewhere - be worth cutting loose of a up-to-now good to very good RB. Although, I haven't heard anything about cutting LT until Sproles had the two big games against Denver and Indy to close out the year.
  17. Everyone (including myself) who didn't give this a chance forgot A.J. Smith - one of the dumber GMs out there, apparently - was making the decisions in San Diego. Why would people scoff at the idea that a team would give up on an expensive RB with a ton of miles on his legs who just can't stay healthy or produce anymore? If I could remember which thread I suggested it in, I could go find out. I know Truffle really though I was dumb for suggesting it. I'm not necessarily advocating it. But I don't understand how anybody who has paid attention to the NFL for the past decade could scoff at the idea. RBs don't last, they fall apart in a hurry, and LDT has shown signs of wearing down after taking on a huge workload for years. I wouldn't scoff if they had a legit replacement for him. I don't see Darren Sproles as a legit replacement. This bandwagon to start Sproles didn't start until he diced up the Colt defense - which even Colts fans were admitting was a great matchup for Sproles to have success in. After that game, he piled up all of 15 yards on 11 carries. I've seen no evidence to this point that he's a feature back.
  18. 1,110 yards and 12 total TDs is not producing? He's not the greatest RB (possibly) ever anymore, but he's still a whole lot better than Darren Sproles. As for staying healthy, he's played in less than 16 games in a season one time in his career - 2004. He got hurt in the last two playoff appearances for SD, but three games out of 35 doesn't indicate he "can't stay healthy." He's averaged what, 400 touches a year for 8 years? He went under 4 yards per carry this season and his production dropped a lot, and he hasn't been able to finish two seasons in a row. These guys fall apart quickly. NFL teams can't afford to pay exhorbitant dollars for pedestrian numbers. He's got Shaun Alexander written all over him. Teams can get in a lot of trouble from trying to squeeze every last yards out of a RB. The last time he had 400 touches was three years ago (348 rushing, 56 receiving). Since then he's had 375 and 346. He's had more than 400 touches three times in his career (2002, 2003, 2006). Yes, he's been hurt in the final game or two the past two seasons, but has also played all 16 regular season games each year. LT is definitely past his prime and may begin to fall off some, but you don't cut him because you have Darren Sproles. Cut back on his carries? Sure, but don't cut him after he's missed three games in the past 35 opportunities. Now, if we were discussing signing him - I wouldn't give him a mega-deal at this point. But since he's already signed and you're going to take a cap hit whether you keep him or cut him, then you might as well see if he can still be a very productive back. If he can't, cut him next year.

  21. Plenty of Packer fans on this board. Green Bay has interviewed Dom Capers for their vacant DC position, according to Adam Schefter. They previously interviewed Mike Nolan and Gregg Williams, but lost out on both.
  22. I remember people laughing off this idea earlier, but now there may be something to the idea that LT may not be back with San Diego next year. Dumping LaDainian Tomlinson for Darren Sproles would be an absolutely horrid decision. But I thought the same thing about dumping Mary Schottenheimer for Norv Turner and A.J. Smith thought that was a good idea too.
  23. According to Thompson (on Tennesee's Rivals site), Saban offered him more money to stay then he'll make at UT. In other news, UT completed their staff today by adding Eddie Gran (RB's), Frank Wilson (WR's- recently hired by MSU to be their recruiting coordinator), and allegedly Willie Mack Garza (DB's). I'm very happy with the most recent moves - though admittedly I've never heard of Wilson and Garza. Gran and Thompson should certainly be terrific additions to the staff, though. Wilson was Orgeron's "go-to" recruiter at Ole Miss, and was the lead guy on Joe McKnight, who almost chose Ole Miss over USC. If you read Meat Market, Orgeron is insanely high on Wilson. Wilson was also the director of high school football in New Orleans at one point, so he's highly thought of in LA. He was just hired by Mullen and MSU and named Recruiting Coordinator (giving UT 5 former RC's on their staff) but will leave before coaching a single day at MSU. His hiring has not even been offically announced in Starkville. Garza is a little more unknown, but he's got a pretty good rep in Texas. Most recently the DC at North Dakota State. Sounds pretty awesome, just so long as these guys can coach. Monte's the only one I'm certain can, but I have to think some of the rest of these guys can. Any clue who the "special teams guru" will be? Gran. Makes sense.
