  1. Update from the Tennessean. Sounds like murder-suicide with McNair as the victim.
  2. Lilly deserves it as well.
  3. Chestnut won today with 68.
  4. When was this? He was great for 14 games in July last year. 2.08 ERA, 1.154 WHIP, 12:3 K:BB
  5. Yeah, you're probably right. It'll be interesting to see how he does with Manny batting behind him again, though.
  6. WBIR has updated their story. It no longer refers to it as a murder-suicide.
  7. Man, with college football on Saturday, the NFL on Sunday and Monday, college on Tuesday and the UFL Wednesday through Friday, there will be football every night of the week for a while. That'll be great.
  8. Thanks UMFan. This is really sad. McNair was easily my favorite player in the NFL through my teen years and into my 20s. One of my favorite all-time players (along with Peyton Manning and Walter Payton) and, in my opinion, one of the best QBs of this generation. I hope the murder-suicide rumor isn't true. WBIR is usually pretty accurate, but they're the only source reporting it right now. McNair was definitely one of the toughest players I've ever seen and was one of the primary reasons the Titans are a legit franchise.
  9. As much as I'd love to have Yunel Escobar, he's not expensive contract-wise so I can't imagine they'd give him up for just prospects. We'll have to come up with some kind of a legit ML bat to give them and we're not exactly overflowing with them. Three-Team Trade Alert How about sending the prospects to Oakland, Holliday goes to the Braves, Escobar comes to the Cubs. I'm not sure of what Oakland might want, but Hoff or Fox, Blanco, and some pitching might start the conversation. We might have to throw a prospect to the Braves too. I doubt they'd have much interest in Blanco. If he was hitting at all they might, but they won't be very interested in a .560ish OPS. I also don't know if Hoff is slugging well enough to make up for his sub .300 OBP to make him valuable in a trade. The general idea might have something to it, though.
  10. A second baseman having a great year for a starter having a mediocre year and a second baseman who has been awful? I doubt it. Harden has the potential to be great - we saw it last season. But his value at the deadline isn't going to be based on what he could do, it'll be based on what he is doing. And he's not been very good this year. Hudson had a great start to the year. He's stunk for the last month and a half. Through May 13: .348/.429/.539/.968 in 163 PA's Since: .243/.296/.322/.618 in 199 PA's Of course, he's still likely to be better than Fontenot (Hudson's never had a sub .700 OPS). Hm, didn't realize how bad he'd been recently. I wonder if it has anything to do with Manny not being in the lineup? Or just natural regression.

  12. lol this cannot be true Here's the thread from last year where the Cubs had an interest in Willits. Most of the comments are of the "well, he could be a decent platoon option but he's not that good" and "well, he has a decent OBP, but he can't hit for any power." Generally there was support for paying a little for him, but there wasn't that much excitement from most posters.

  14. McLouth's overall numbers are being pulled down by a rough A+ line. His numbers at Lynchburg (High A in 2002) were .244/.324/.392/.716. He repeated that level and OPSd .797. They then promoted him to AA and he put up an .846 OPS, much better than Fuld has ever done. His 2005 season in AAA at age 23 consisted of a better OBP and SLG than Fuld has been putting up at AA and AAA at ages 26-27. McLouth showed an ability to hit AA and AAA pitching. Fuld has not.
  15. Fuld hasn't been a particularly good minor leaguer throughout his entire career. Two ML games and a couple of weeks in the minors isn't going to change that. Fuld had a .758 OPS in AAA this year - even if he converted that perfectly to the majors he'd be mediocre. The likelihood is that .758 OPS will drop further. There's simply no good evidence that Fuld can be a quality major leaguer. And if Soriano is hitting well, he scores lots of runs. That's what you want your leadoff man to do, is it not? You also want your best hitters toward the top of the lineup because the higher in the lineup they are, the more at bats they get and the more productive they are. Why then, if Soriano is producing like he's capable of, would you drop him down in the lineup and take away 100+ ABs that he could be incredibly productive in? Fuld has a career minor league line of .287/.370/.409 which is good for a leadoff guy. A leadoff hitter doesnt need to slug .500 or OPS .850 Most of that was accrued in the low leves (A-, A+). He hasn't had an OPS at or above .800 since he left Daytona (high A). That's a sign that he feasted on barely professional talent and then when it was time to take on legit prospects, he fell off. His slugging hasn't topped .400 since Daytona and his OBP has dropped from .376 his first year in AA/AAA to .358 the past two seasons.

  17. All those moves sound good to me. It would also be awesome if we could find away to sneak Aaron Miles into a deal for a bullpen arm. Maybe other teams don't realize he's Aaron Miles... Hendry has to man up and cut his losses with Miles. He shouldn't have been signed in the first place. He can barely play SS so what kind of bench option is he really? I'd rather have Blanco on the team. It's so frustrating seeing Miles have so many at bats this season. Cutting Miles at this point wouldn't give us any real benefit. Cutting him just to "admit a mistake" or to "man up" isn't a good way of doing things. The contract shouldn't have been handed out, but Miles provides depth and is as good or better than any backup infield option we have (save, maybe, for Jeff Baker). He's been incredibly unlucky this year and still is just slightly worse than Blanco offensively. If Miles can get any sort of luck he'll be better than Blanco on offense. If we can trade him, fine, but cutting him isn't going to recover the $4.9 million he's under contract for and will only give us less depth. I can't think of any option that is worse than Miles. He's not good offensively or defensively. At least the other options have at least one strength. He's better than Blanco offensively, Blanco is much better defensively. Overall, Blanco is probably the better option, but not by enough to outright cut one of only three players who Lou is prepared to play at SS. If we cut Miles and Blanco gets hurt, there's no one in the organization left to backup Theriot. Plus, we'd still have to pay Miles his salary either way - where's the benefit to the team?
  18. I think Lou is rearranging the lineup because Soriano is not producing, not because Fuld has to be in it. If they do DL one of Bradley or Soriano, I have no problem with keeping Fuld on the roster for that period of time. Otherwise, he shouldn't take the roster spot of a better player. I agree with this, but even then I want to see Hoffpauir playing instead of Fuld. As long as Fuld is hitting well he can play but Hoff is definitely the better option over a significant period of time.

  21. It is hard to imagine Fuld and Reed on the team at the same time, but remember, at the start of the season we had Gathright and Reed at the same time, and we didnt have a backup shortstop, so if Fuld has 2 great games, dont be surprised to look around Monday and not see Andres Blanco and Micah Hoffpauir. Demoting Hoffpauir - who's slugging .447 over the course of more than 160 ABs - because Fuld has a few good games would not be a good idea. The bench needs all the power it can get with guys like Blanco, Hill, Miles, etc. on it.
  22. If they work it as sort of a minor league system for the NFL and can work with the NFL, I think it can work. If they try to compete with the NFL, no. I've thought for a while that a minor league system in the NFL would be a good idea, so I'm hoping this works.
  23. Kendall, Soriano blows. Kendall OPS: .606 Soriano OPS: .718 I'd take Soriano.
  24. Im just saying ride the hot hand. Nothing more. I just wish that rathe than sending someone down theyd try to shop these guys around for a reliever which is what we really need. I cant take Heilman or Patton anymore. We're not getting much better than Heilman if we trade a 29-year-old whose only real benefit is his power. He's worth more if we keep him. Hoff is a bench guy. He'll probably get another 5-7 years out of it. Hes not the 1st baseman of the future, as he'll be 31 years old by the time Lees gone, assuming Lee remains through the duration of his contract. Even if we can get a reliever from an AL team that the NL hasnt seen much of, id take it. Even if we get like a Russ Springer, Id take it. Fox and Hoff on the same team is like Daryl Ward and Cliff Floyd again. If we can get more for Fox, then try to shop him. In a perfect world, Jake Fox could be the backup catcher, but thats not going to happen. Our bench should look like Power/backup 1B/5th outfielder-Fox/Hoff 4th outfielder-Fuld/Reed backup SS-Blanco utility-Baker/Miles catcher-Hill You're right, Hoff is a bench guy. That's why he won't provide much value in a trade. I'd rather have him available as a power bat off the bench than trade him for a mediocre veteran reliever. Teams don't value 29-year-old bench players who only slug highly enough to give us a significant upgrade in the pen.
