  1. Could that have been an attempt at a bunt for a hit? I wasn't sure when I saw it, but he didn't seem to square up as if he were just sacrificing. That was most definitely a sac bunt attempt. Eh, maybe I wasn't watching close enough. I don't like any kind of bunt there, though.

  3. I'm deeply offended . . .
  4. Yeah, a Gamel or Escobar trade for Vazquez wouldn't be good for the Brewers. It wouldn't happen, but what about a Fielder for Vazquez trade? Both teams get an impact at their weak spot and the Brewers move Gamel into first base. Probably more of an offseason trade if it was going to happen. Braves could also theoretically throw in a good prospect or two to alleviate the age differential.
  5. Hoff is one of those players who is more valuable to us than anything we could likely get for him - even if we sold him at his peak value.
  6. The two together might be a bit too redundant, unless they wanted to platoon them. It'd also take away most of the power on our bench. I'd only trade one of the two - preferably Fox. I'd much rather trade Hoffpauir. Fox can play the positions Micah plays, and he's probably a better hitter too. Not to mention, he's younger, and can backup 3b. We'd probably get more for Fox, though. That's my reasoning in a nutshell. All the reasons you'd prefer Fox are the reasons we won't get much of anything for Hoff. His value is as a power lefty bat off the bench and that's as far as it goes. I can't imagine anybody would view him as a starter. That type of player might net us a Heilman-esque reliever or so. Hoff is more valuable to us that that, though.
  7. Only 80-85 percent? I want Aramis back as bad as the next guy, but we probably should have just waited until after the All-Star break. He may not get much better than that until he has surgery on it.

  9. DLee still can't be traded in the offseason unless he approves it. That doesn't appear likely. I still want to see more from Fox before I anoint him as Lee's successor, but I do like what I've seen to this point. Doh. Details smetails. Alright 2011 it is! The Cubs should be able to get a deal or 2 down without Fox. I wouldn't be pushing for a Fox trade, but I also wouldn't make him untouchable or anything.
  10. Even that is debatable. Each of Aaron Cook, Jason Hammel and Ubaldo Jimenez have similar (or better) numbers to Marquis. Over the rest of the season, I'd definitely take Hammel or Jimenez over Marquis as well.
  11. The fact that he's no more than a bench bat makes him more valuable to us in that role than to trade him for what would likely be a marginal reliever or the like. Fox might project to have some upside as a regular, thus making his return in a trade worth it. And the problem with the lefty/righty thing is when you go with an inferior player solely because he's left handed. There's not enough evidence at this point to clearly state that Fox is superior as a bench player than Hoff.

  13. That's the problem. To fair the relievers that I would trade Fox for are not available, and the one that are, simply is not worth Fox. I'm not above trading Fox, but not for a "reliever." I think the Cubs could land nice solid reliever without giving up Fox. Yeah, I wouldn't just trade him for any reliever. I'm not sure I'd trade him for any reliever. I just really don't have a good grasp of his value and upside at this point. I wouldn't rule it out for an elite reliever, though.
  14. HOW MANY TIMES DO I HAVE TO SPELL OUT THE GOOD REASON? He is a wasted roster spot. If you can find somebody dumb enough to take on his completely unwarranted contract, go right ahead and trade him. I'd have no problem with that, obviously. But I highly doubt somebody is going to take any significant portion of his contract. The Cubs have other people who are more useful, like guys who can do something with the bat or guys who can actually backup at SS and provide defense, so you keep those guys and dump Miles. So let's wait the 2-3 weeks until he's healthy and make the decision then. How about that?
  15. I really hope not. I think Fox is worth more then a "AL reliever." Let him play out the season to raise his value and then move him to the AL in the offseason. Trading Fox for a "reliever" doesn't improve the tean. If it's a very good reliever it does improve the team. The question is, is Fox's value high enough that it would merit more than just a reliever? Or will it get to that point? That I don't know.
  16. I'm betting they're going to go with 11 pitchers til the break then. I doubt they'll expose Blanco to waivers and I'd be surprised if Fontenot gets demoted after a strong week. With a DH on Sunday, their infatuation with the extra arm and Harden's very short start on Saturday, I have extreme doubts that will be the case. But the question would have to be who is the guy that goes away. If Patton gets DLd that makes perfect sense. But if they send somebody down and have Patton be one of those 11, that would be very odd. They spent a month and a half desperate of bats with quality start after quality start and plenty of bullpen arms, but suddenly they'd be fine with a short bullpen? It seems odd to do it now, but I can't figure out what the other move would be. Like I said, they seem to love Blanco and sending down Fontenot after a really good week would seem odd. Maybe they'll send down Fontenot and platoon Baker/Blanco at second?
  17. That's a large part of it, yes. As soon as he gets back from the DL, I'd try to trade his salary for a PTBNL (which is possible, given the interest that was there in the offseason). If you can't trade him, though, and Fox or somebody is still hitting the ball great, then you cut Miles. But, if he returns and the only thing keeping him off the roster is, for instance, a 12th pitcher, then you demote the 12th pitcher and keep Miles. As for now, though, he's not hurting anything sitting on the DL and he's really no less useful than Blanco. Blanco is better with the glove, Miles is better with the bat. Miles is better with nothing. You are obsessed with his contract for no good reason. If they want to store him on the DL all year, fine, but that's not going to happen. The choice is going to be feel forced to keep him around because he has a guarantee or use that roster spot on somebody useful. I just don't understand the desire to cut him for no good reason. If bringing him back off the DL when he comes back will force us to demote or (in Blanco's case) lose someone else with value, then I can understand cutting him. If we're sending back Patton or demoting, for instance, 12th pitcher Kevin Hart, then I would keep Miles around - unless Hendry can work out a trade.
  18. Totally different scenarios. Freel was owed nothing, Miles has a 2-year guaranteed contract. If you trade him, you aren't getting anything worthwhile. Getting something worthwhile wouldn't be the goal. The goal would be dumping the remaining salary he's due.
  19. I don't think you'd have to pay that much of his salary unless you expect something in return. A player like Miles is not valued very highly on this board (for good reason), but MLB GMs still have a thing for players like him. Someone would take him if Hendry is willing to deal him.

  22. Freel had already been DFAd to make room for Jeff Baker. The Cubs still have to make three moves to free up new roster spots.
  23. I'd prefer Blanco too, but cutting Miles doesn't do us a whole lot of good at this point. Yes it does, it frees up a roster spot for somebody who can be useful, allowing you to keep somebody who can actually backup SS while getting rid of somebody who can't do a damn thing. Keep Miles and you have to decide to get rid of somebody who can help defensively or somebody who can help with the bat. The salary is eaten. It doesn't hurt the team at all. There will be plenty of other jack of a couple trades master at none players around to bring aboard if the need for such a player arises. So trade him for a PTBNL or something and shed the contract. If you can't trade him (which I doubt would be the case) and there comes a time when there's simply no spot for him, then consider cutting him. But cutting him now when it has no benefit for the team doesn't make much sense.
  24. The Baker trade wasn't unnecessary. He was acquired (it appears) to be a platoon partner with Fontenot. Is Bobby Scales dead? Baker's a better hitter than Scales. Baker has (roughly) the same OPS against lefties in the majors as Scales does against lefties in the minors. Scales also, in limited plate appearances, also had a .798 OPS against lefties in the majors this year.
