  1. I went with above average as well. As much as I want him to become great (and I really think he can), predicting an A-Rod, Hanley type career is going a tad overboard.
  2. Could Gonzalez play RF for a season? Very, very unlikely I realize and I feel silly for asking it, but could he do it just well enough?
  3. Heres the latest from MLBTR. Nothing groundbreaking. This is actually very good news, I think. The more teams interested, the better.
  4. For as talented as Ole Miss is, Houston Nutt showed his true colors as a coach. He cannot coach a team that has expectations put on them. Put them in the underdog and Nutt can succeed, but expect him to win and he folds like a wet paper bag. So I really like Tennessee's chances against Ole Miss. I wonder what it is, if anything, he does differently when his team has expectations surrounding it. Yeah, I think Monte will cook up some good blitz packages to throw off Snead. He's a talented QB, though, and at any point could look like the guy he did at the end of last year.
  5. A lot depends on what other teams do. If there are still a bunch of 2-3 loss teams in the lower half of the rankings at the end of the year, then I doubt a 4-loss Tennessee team gets in. If, however, a few teams at the bottom of the rankings start losing, you might see some 3-4 loss teams moving up - and I'd have to imagine Tennessee is one of, if not the, highest ranked 4-loss teams in the nation. I could be mistaken, but I think by the end of the season there are usually 8-4 teams scattered around the 20-25 range. Mississippi, Oregon State, Missouri and Virginia Tech were all ranked between 19 and 25 in both the AP and Coaches polls. Yeah, I think it's a pretty normal thing to happen. I'm not sure there's a 3 or 4 loss team that's playing better than Tennessee right now, but it's hard to justify them in the top 25 when there are still plenty of 2 loss teams in there.

  7. I didn't get to see the game but my brother told me about that option play. Supposedly there were four 49ers in position and CJ made some cut and ran past them all. Parys Haralson was the only guy who had a real shot at CJ immediately, but CJ sidestepped him - putting him in a perfect position to slide along the sideline into the end zone. Without the cut that Parys necessitated, CJ probably doesn't even get the first down. He should have been stopped in the backfield. They were pretty focused on stopping CJ and the run. Vince hit a couple deep balls throughout the game setting up scores and CJ broke a couple of long runs. Otherwise there wasn't much offense on the Titans' side.
  8. As for the game Saturday, I like our chances. McCluster might be a problem, but I don't know that Snead will do much better against our defense than Alabama's. As usual, a smart offensive day likely gives the Vols a win. Too many turnovers or not containing McCluster will almost certainly turn into a Rebel victory.
  9. Yeah, even with one of the 4 losses being by two points to the #2 team in the nation, it's hard to justify a 4-loss team over the 2-3 loss teams currently inhabiting the bottom of the rankings. Tennessee's playing well enough right now that I think they compete with or beat most of the teams from about 20 down. If Tennessee can win out, I wouldn't be surprised to see them slip into the top 25 before the bowl.
  10. I'm happy with the win today. Vince started out a bit slow, but finished with a nice day - 12-19, 172 yards. More importantly, no turnovers by Vince and the 49ers got only one sack. Not turning the ball over will win a lot of games, especially if the defense continues to play at least decently. Also, I love that Fisher incorporates option and zone read plays into the playbook with Vince in there. The option on fourth down that gave CJ his second TD was pretty awesome.
  11. Really nice game for Tennessee last night. Yes, it was just Memphis, but still another good game for Crompton (21-27, 305 yards and 4 TDs) and the win puts us at 5-4 - one win away from bowl eligibility. I'm very interested to see where Memphis' receivers go in the draft. Neither are highly touted, but at 6'4 (Calhoun) and 6'9 (Singleton) they've got the size and, it appears, the athleticism to be late rounds picks/UFAs at least, I'd think.
  12. I guess if Ben Grieve and Micah Hoffpauir can "play" the position, then I supposed Fox can to. Ultimately, it wouldn't surprise me if Fox is dealt to an AL team. I'm just wondering if his offensive production vs lefties would be good enough to offset his defense in right. And with the cash crunch the team has, I'd be a bit surprised if Fox is dealt this offseason.
  13. Let's say we sign Cameron to play center, could Jake Fox play right well enough to platoon with Kosuke in right? That way we wouldn't have to pay extra for a Kosuke platoon partner.
  14. Boise, TCU, BYU, Fresno, Houston, Southern Miss would be a decent starting point for a new BCS conference.
  15. Yes, he did. Of course, you have to have a quality arm and be able to read defensive backfields to run a pro-style offense though. Two things he can't do. This might be a really dumb question, but who was the last OSU qb to have a somewhat successful NFL career? Kent Graham?
  16. I'd still very happily take Cameron if Bradley is traded.
  17. I don't see how that could be a bad thing. Hendry's already telegraphed that he wants Bradley gone at any cost. I don't also want him jumping at the first offer he gets. It's a bad thing because it leaves the team unable to make other moves before this one is made and they know what they are left with, and at that time the good players are gone and most teams have made the trades/signings they want. That could leave them in a situation where all they do is dump Bradley and sign a hitting coach, while resigning a mediocre reliever of their own, and maybe acquire some other bench schmuck. 2005 sucked, in part because the 2004/2005 offseason was all about dumping Sosa and that didn't happen until February. If it drags into February, that's not good. But, it dragging on for a while (maybe early to mid January) might actually be a good thing. The longer this goes, the more free agents will be signed by other teams and the fewer options teams bidding on Bradley will have. There's a chance a team in mid January will see a dwindling free agent/trade market and make a stronger bid for Milton. Also, the likelihood that we'll have the money for big free agents is quite low, so most of our free agent work this offseason might be closer to bargain bin stuff anyway and that usually picks up in late January and into February.
  18. He might not be ready to start next year, but we do have Tyler Bray (4 stars on Rivals) committed. He's raw but very talented. I didn't forget him, and I do like the kid's potential. How confident are you with Nick Stephens as your starter next yr? As Crompton continues to improve, I feel that much better about Stephens at QB next year. Before the season, I thought we really needed a QB that could step in immediately. And while I'm still very confused that Lane turned away Tajh Boyd, it appears that these coaches (Lane and Chaney particularly) are very good working with QBs. If they've made this much progress with Crompton in a little under 3/4s of a season, I'm interested to see what they can do with Stephens when they have until next September to get him on the field.
  19. Vince Young was that way too his first couple of years in college, but he developed nicely in college. Sometimes it just takes longer.

  21. Aw crap. That sucks.
  22. I need to start one of these to cover APs bye week: LeSean McCoy v Dal Darren Sproles v NYG
  23. I think Finnegan (assuming he gets the matchup) will do well against Crabtree. I wonder more about who will cover Davis.
  24. The Titans front four will have to get pressure without a blitz, I'm thinking. I'd have to guess Finnegan will match up quite a bit on Crabtree, leaving someone (Fuller or McCourty, I guess) to face off with Isaac Bruce. No idea how we'll defend Vernon Davis, probably one of the linebackers or Fuller. The key will be stopping Gore, I think. If we can stop/contain Gore and pressure Smith with the front four, it should stay low-scoring. If not, the secondary will probably have issues again.
  25. I knew Clements went down, but I didn't realize Staley was hurt as well. Hopefully that'll be good news for KVB and his resurgence. A big part of our defensive improvement was getting Finnegan and Fuller back last week, I think, and they should be a week healthier. Again, though, Vince is still a question mark and I really doubt they want the game to rest completely on him. I wasn't able to watch the Colts/49ers game, how did Alex Smith look against Indy?
