  1. A while ago I would have thought why not just give him the bench role he seems destined to fill. However, if he really has developed some actual power and still has a chance to be a little more than that, then you have to let him play everyday in the minors. This is my thinking. If you need to fill a bench spot, do it with a player like Fuld whose upside is as a 4th/5th outfielder type and not with a guy who could potentially develop into more. I think Fuld would actually be more valuable than Colvin in a bench role because of his baserunning ability and superior fielding.
  2. Two points of interest today: The NFL is considering making the Weeks 16 and 17 games divisional contests to dissuade teams from resting starters. and The Eagles are "listening" to offers for McNabb and Kolb.
  3. Most of the time, both teams get possession in OT, going by these figures. But it also proves that 35% of the OT games were competitively one sided. When you have a test of skill where only 1 team/person is able to provide the outcome, it no longer becomes a competition. The defense had a chance to stop the offense in those 35% of games and couldn't do it. Obviously, most of the time defenses can force at least one possession for their offense, so there is a competition. It's just that 35% of the time, the offense was better than the defense on the first drive.
  4. You don't think he has out played Shark to this point? Silva has basically had two bad innings all of spring training. He has shown that his sinker is more effective and he has shown some glimmer that he can be somewhat effective as a 4-5 starter. I was as big on Shark as anybody prior to spring training, but based on his outings so far he hasn't shown any improvement and I'm coming around to agreeing with Gooney and others that think his window of opportunity is quickly closing. Marshall and Gorzelanny are starting options as well. But I think the Cubs would rather have one of them coming out of the pen and the other one gets the 4th spot until Lilly comes back. It really does come down to Silva and Shark now that Diamond has pitched his way out of consideration. I wonder if they'd consider Berg as an option? Piniella seems to like him a lot and has already said that he's made the team. Like SSR said, the 5th starter's job is more important than the second lefty. That said, you're probably right and the job has been Silva's to lose from the beginning.
  5. Alright then, we have completed the second round. We'll move on to the third round, then, and I have spoiler tagged the first two rounds and added the draft order for the third round to the first post in this thread. mul21 and reggiemiller rules are now on the clock for the Rams' pick. I PMd them.
  6. Research was done by the NFL Network staff and George Li figuring out just how often the team that won the coin toss won the game on the opening possession. Here's the link to the article about it. Most of the time, both teams get possession in OT, going by these figures.
  7. OMC's last post was 2/27, FYI Yeah, we'll see if he can get the pick to me. Otherwise, we'll make a consensus pick for him. That said, does anybody have any thoughts on this pick?
  8. Dew, your plan makes no sense. First off, teams are still going to score FG. This just makes teams think twice about not even trying for a TD. Second, you complain about the untrue notion that teams are being told to not do something that has been a part of football for decades, and then suggest removing something that has been a part of football for decades - special teams. You take out kickoffs and complain about a punt fest that isn't going to happen. That's a valid point on taking out special teams. However, I could definitely see a field position battle taking place in a few OT games. I don't know that it'd even be most, but I tend to think there would be some times that teams would punt instead of going for it, pin a team deep and then that team would end up punting, etc. This was basically my original point in this thread.
  9. OMC and the Saints are now on the clock. I PMd him.
  10. The reason I bring up the college system is that it generally tends to be very exciting. If the first team scores, then the second team must drive down and score as well, which makes for a very exciting drive. The problem I have with the collegiate system is that it artificially pumps up scoring (since it's so easy to score from your opponents' 25). That is solved, however, if you start each drive at your own 25 (or something like that). And yes, a field goal can still win the game, but it can in the system they've just implemented too. The focus is on making sure both teams touch the ball in OT and fixing this perceived "unfairness." The collegiate system tweaked does that. A bad thing may have been hyperbole, but you're going to see less exciting games because teams are going to be punting from deep in the opponents' territory on fourth and long because they're not going to want to try a long field goal. Thus, you're going to turn overtime into a field position battle more often than I think supporters of the system want. You're telling teams not to attempt to score in a way that has been part of football for decades. I don't understand the dislike for field goals winning games.
  11. You don't think he has out played Shark to this point? Silva has basically had two bad innings all of spring training. He has shown that his sinker is more effective and he has shown some glimmer that he can be somewhat effective as a 4-5 starter. 12. That is a horribly stupid idea. The only thing they want to prevent is idiots like Peter King crying about how unfair it is for a team to lose a game via FG without touching the ball in OT. It's a stupid complaint, but the idioits complain loud enough so they are addressing it. You have 60 freaking minutes to win, it's perfectly fair. There's nothing unfair about the current system. I agree with the bolded 100%. I see no need to change the current system, but if they're completely set on changing it, I don't like this change. All the new system does is make field goals a bad thing. They're not a bad thing, they're a part of football. Again, I don't think there's a need for a change as I don't see any unfairness in the current system. But if they're that determined to change it, I think a system closer to the college system would be better than what they're implementing.
  13. I'm one of the rarities who don't have a problem with the current OT system in the NFL. That said, I don't mind changing it either. I don't understand this change, though. If you're that set on giving both teams the extra opportunity, then just do that. Go with a system like college football does, but move the starting point across the 50 or something.
  14. Just read today where Burnett's stock is rising fast – perhaps even to him being a late first round guy (third safety behind Berry and Mays). CCP and Exile are now on the clock for the Colts' pick. I PMd him.
  15. Bowman's a pretty solid linebacker. And you did kind of limit my options with that pick. Well I didn't want to completely crap out on my responsibilities, but I was in no position to research it. I'd never heard of the guy even though I've seen PSU play quite a bit. It's all good. As for Bowman, he started the offseason as the 2nd linebacker from PSU (behind Sean Lee), but has had a pretty good offseason and his stock has risen. Now, he's probably comparable to Lee. Good size, good sideline-to-sideline speed. I think he'd make a good addition to Fewell's new Cover 2 system.
  16. Bowman's a pretty solid linebacker. And you did kind of limit my options with that pick.
  17. hawkeyecub and the Vikings are now on the clock. I PMd him.
  18. Dwyer's another guy I think will be a good deal for somebody after subpar speed showings at the combine. Though he did improve his stock a bit at his pro day, it seems. jersey cubs fan and the Jets are now on the clock. I PMd him.
  19. He timed very slow, but didn't look it on the field. He may play faster than he times and I'd be fine with the Titans taking him most anywhere. Best in a 3-4 I think, though.
  20. Spikes' stock has dropped, but I like him quite a bit. Especially in a 3-4 where his apparent lack of speed (not great 40 times or 10-yard splits) isn't as big a deal. weis21 and the Chargers are now on the clock. I PMd him.
  21. Yeah, I don't know if Hendry is definitely going to start Silva all year simply because he's being paid a lot of money. He may well get the first opportunity, but he'll need to take advantage of that opportunity.
  22. I like Ducasse's potential quite a bit. vance and shnsajax are on the clock for the Cowboys' pick. I PMd them.
  23. Keep in mind Lilly is out for a month, so there are 2 spots in the rotation to fill. Right now Z, Dempster and Wells are assured spots. Marshall, Shark, Gorz and Silva are fighting for the other two. So even if Silva gets one of those spots, it doesn't mean Gorz and Marshall will both be in the bullpen together. My guess is that Marshall and Silva will get the two spots until Lilly is healthy and then whichever of the former two is pitching worse will be the player that is moved to the pen (thus giving us Z, Lilly, Demp, Wells, Silva/Marshall). That's just a guess, though.
  24. The NCAA needs to structure the tournament in a way where Gus gets all of the games. I would strongly approve of this. Gus calling the UNI/Kansas game would be truly amazing. Hearing him call the Michigan St/Maryland game yesterday would have been epic. I missed the game, but after seeing the highlights, I agree 100%.
