  1. To be a high end closer you need 2 plus pitches or in Rivera's case, the best single pitch in MLB history (until that Nats pitcher throws his slider). To be a #1 starter, you also generally need need two plus pitches with a ML avg. 3rd pitch with some having a ML avg. 4th pitch. A starter will require better command/control to be an elite starter given pitch counts and larger samples to where loss of control can hurt.
  2. Samardzija even with the velo does not have the stuff to be an effective closer. The fact he can throw 95+ doesn't make his fastball a plus pitch considering it lacks movement, deception, and command. Then, you combine it with an inconsistent slider and splitter and I don't see how he would become an option to be groomed at closer. Grooming him for the pen because he can't cut it as a starter doesn't equate to him being groomed as a closer.
  3. (Just to elaborate) If I was to take a corner OF'er, which I think Vitek will likely end up or be a below avg. 3B, I have Choice, J. Sale (who I really like), Brentz higher than him. I would rate him above Austin Wilson though.
  4. I don't think he has the defense to stick at 3B and will likely end up in RF. His bat isn't as strong as O'Connor's versitility to pitch, catch, or play 3B at the next level although if the choice was between the two, I wouldn't complain either way.
  5. Of those Top 5. I would have Workman #1, although I'm not too high on his mechanics. Eibner #2 O'Connor #3 Vitek #4
  6. Fwiw, I'm not high on Wimmers. He's a safer 1st rd. pick with a more limited ceilings than others who'll be on the board.
  7. Of the 5 you have listed I'd put them in this order... Colon Choice Harvey Eibner Too much risk with Ranaudo. How about throwing some HS names in your hat, I know Wilken likes the college route but let me enjoy some names.
  8. Yes, please. I've never seen a better prep position player than him.
  9. That's not a sign of how good the teams are compared to how bad they are.
  10. Sure it is, it's part of the reason Boston has been as bad as the Cubs so far w/higher expectations (of course, Boston won't put Beckett in the pen). I guess we might be talking about different things. Obviously, you can call it feast or famine based on what's happened, I was talking going forward. I don't think you can glean anything from 16 games when it comes to deviation of an offense. For this team, it is easy to say that it is feast or famine. This is the same team that was mostly famine last year. When you have a guy like Soriano who either goes 3 for 4 with a homerun and 3 rbi's, or 0 for 4 with 3 K's, it's easy to be feast or famine. Not to mention the fact that this team is littered with players that are either slow starters or slow finishers. This is one of the worst constructed rosters I have ever seen. It also has to do with how the lineup is handled. Instead of allowing players to grow accustomed to their position in the lineup, Lou changes it. Jumping around in the batting order isn't going to help anyone get comfortable or get into a consistent groove. Both of which are necessary for a player to hit. A blast from the ESPN Cubs message board past!
  11. There's not much predictive value there given the flucuations hitters go thru but it is important as far as analyzing what has happened as from most offensive you want less deviation and from more pitching staffs you want more deviation.
  12. Sure it is, it's part of the reason Boston has been as bad as the Cubs so far w/higher expectations (of course, Boston won't put Beckett in the pen).
  13. The scout is right that they lack team speed, of course that isn't the reason why their record is worse than how they've played. They're again a feast or famine type of offense in which half of the games they've played they have scored 3 or less runs and you combine that with the worst pen in baseball and they can't win low scoring and close ballgames. He's also right about teams being able to work Zambrano, Gorzelanny, and Dempster into deeper counts and climibing their pitch counts to get to the pen. Of course, they're going about it all wrong as far as trying to improve the pen with Zambrano. He's been solid minus the 1st start and with Lou's lack of patience with the marginal arms that have already been called-up prob. doesn't want to see the arms more likely to be feast or famine with the better stuff but more likely to bb hitters as Parker and Stevens have mediocre control stats from the right side.
  14. This is just getting to be a joke. We'll see soon as far as CJ Leslie and Terrance Jones who are both looking at each other as well as Patterson's decision to stay or leave UK. I think UK ends up with one of them with the other going to NCST or Oregon respectively.
  15. UK just rec'd a commit from 2011 PG Marquis Teague, who by some is rated as the #2 prospect of the class behind UK commit Gilchrist.
  16. Doyel at CBS had twittered that he had been cleared by the NCAA earlier this month, that was prob. premature as nothing certain has been mentioned.
  17. Uk ends up with the best player of '10 and '11 on the same day and IMO will end up with Lamb and Leslie as well as one more before the recruiting ends. Snood, I can't see Selby going anywhere else than KU.
  18. Today is likely a very important day for UK basketball concerning the next two seasons with the expected announcements of 2010 Brandon Knight and 2011 Michael Gilchrist.
  19. I don't know where Jay and Chandler, OK are located but here's the top 5 or so HS players...
  20. I think it's unfair to assume that he didn't work at his defensive game as much as needed compared to a lack of physical abilities needed to be a solid defensive player.
  21. In the preseason, BA had him as the #63 HS Sr. in the country. He's definitely higher than that at this point from the buzz he has rec'd.
  22. Kyle Farnsworth had a ton of movement on his pitches. Farnsworth's FB was straight as an arrow, he flashed a good slider at times but it never developed into an out pitch, and had a so-so 3rd pitch (lack of control splitter). He threw such a high % of FBs that were high velo straight FBs with up and down command, I don't see how one can say he had a ton of movement on his pitches.
  23. Depends on your definition of a one-dimensional hitter as to whether or not he was one-dimensional. He wasn't one-dimensional in the fact that he could hit breaking-balls and off-speed pitches as well as fastballs and could hit to RF with power. He was one-dimensional in the fact that he never shortened his swing with two strikes and had an uppercut swing which was never going to allow him to hit for a higher avg. nor change his approach ala Dunn/Thome. The ability to draw BBs/OBP is equally dependent on his well-defined strike zone judgement and the plan of the pitcher, both are independent of one's ability to put the bat on the ball. As far as whether or not that will make him a good or bad hitting coach, it matters very little what he did as a player compared to how he treats the players, how well he observes flaws/correctable points, pitchers tipping, and most importantly how well he communicates with them. You can line up 30 hitting coaches all watching the same batter and they will all likely pick up on the absolutes and flaws of that batter, the separation will be how well they communicate that flaw via discussion, drill, etc. to correct it.
  24. That's the bad part of building a roster around one and dones. Obviously Calipari can recruit with the best of them as last year's class indicates and he'll bring another top class once everything gets settled with who's leaving and who's staying. With that said, next year's team won't be as strong as this year's squad but once the dust settles, they'll still be pretty damn good.
  25. Having seen him pitch, he's much better from the right side and more gimmick from the left side.
