    The Trib. has allocated the highest payroll in the NL for the Cubs. Blame the Cubs for lowering Sosa's trade value, video tapes of him leaving early, making the info. public, and then basically letting the other 29 teams know that the Cubs have to trade Sosa, so he can he had at your asking price. Whatever minute trade value Sosa had before the Cubs got involved in the slander campaign was ruined b/c the Cubs wanted to get in a war or words... To compound that, they weren't going to sign another OF'er until they traded Sosa, which made it difficult when nobody wanted Sosa. Hendry did not put the Cubs in a position to win this year, injuries and bad luck can't mask the problems surrounding this team.

    Little is very similar to Baker as far as being laid back, he's also considered a "player's" manager (one of the most overused terms around). He'd likely be more willing to use younger players in more important roles, but like Baker is horrible as far a tactician. Better options out there, Hendry didn't settle for 2nd best when going after Baker, he had Baker at the top of his list. I think Little is in the 2nd tier as far as avail. managers, but if Hendry could put Baker at the top, he could very well put Little at the top as well. Which just leads to a flawed thought process, rather than a learned from mistake (Baker).

    If you start Rusch, do it to build whatever trade value he might have going into next year. But, to keep him as a long reliever/emergency starter does nothing but lead to him being less productive and more overpaid. Someday, there will be a manager who will believe in my philosophy of giving a starter a couple of games off during the Summer, just for rest purposes. This would extend to all 5 starters for a minimum of 2 starts each at various points during the season.

    I may be a bit biased, but for about $3 mil/per I'd gladly take Eckstein's production value over the others you listed. Sure, he's been a better value, which is based on the lesser contract. But, 3 mil. for a .256 EqA and below avg. defense is the sign of an overpaid player.

    What do McLaren and Mills do now? McLaren is Captain Lou's Bench coach down in TB. (More than likely, he will not adopt the same veteran fetish as Piniella). Mills is the bench coach out in Boston. Johnson is the type of manager that has rubbed his players the wrong way, he has had constant squabbles throughout his managerial career which I recall in Balt. and LA. I don't remember much from the Mets years, beyond my dislike for the Mets back then. He's a good manager, similar to LaRussa as far as trying to find whatever advantage possible, but everything I heard says he has no desire to return to coaching.

    It was the battle of the overpaid SS this last off-season, Nomar had to drop out of the race due to injury... Between Cabrera, Eckstein, Renteria, Guzman, and Nomar. I'd give it to Guzman. None have been worth their salary, some worse than others. Next year will probably have Furcal.

    Tracy, Leyland, Dierker would be an immed. upgrade at manager as far as those prev. experience. John McLaren, Brad Mills, and Fredi Gonzalez would be an upgrade with those with no prev. managerial experience.

    The '05 Cubs, playing like they're late for their next round of golf! Can't imagine this team folding at the end of July. Isolating blame to one sector of the team doesn't do justice to the others who deserve blame as well.

    Another question I have is... Why haven't they addressed it already? Even when Dusty made the quote (probably 24-30 hours ago), shouldn't that have been addressed after the Wed. night game or before the 1PM game on Thursday?

    This isn't surprising, it goes along with my theory that there has always been a separation between Rothschild and Baker from day 1. A quote between two coaches would more than likely go a little bit differently if they'd see eye to eye. I believe this is the final year of Larry's contract...

    Say you have two different types of hitters, one who is fairly closed that you would like open their stance to take advantage of their pull power more often, while possibly risking a bit of contact in the process (I think of Murton). Second, is the player that you'd like to close their stance (Tony Batista comes to mind) to maybe generate more contact at the risk of losing power, which situation is more difficult to correct (assuming each have the same work ethic and ability to adapt).

    I think Jeromy Burnitz has fielded his position quite well this season. In fact, I've yet to see him miss the cut-off man, which has been quite refreshing. I was speaking about offense, his .274 EqA is well below avg. for a corner OF'er.

    Smith deserves to be in the HOF, now was he better than Ripken (who re-defined the position)? I'd go for Ripken as the best SS of the 80s and A-Rod in the 90s..

    What the heck is this? Showing Park's stats up until he went to Texas... What am I looking for? Wood allowed 95 less runs than an avg. pitcher would have throughout his career, Park allowed 45 less runs during his timeframe in LA.
