    Exactly, there's the difference. Payroll doesn't decipher how good a team can be, it's how they spend it. The Cubs not being competitive this year was not based on the 12.6 allocated to Sosa. That 12.6 would not have made a difference without changing the overall strategy of the team 1st.

    The White Sox earned the playoff bid, had oustanding pitching for most of the year and were able to ride out the ups and downs offensively and struggles towards the end of some of the starters (Contreras was good throughout Sept.). I'll still be in Clev. this weekend hoping they clinch the WC.

    i think he was referring to Farnsworth. note that Furcal has had problems with the nightlife in Atlanta. :wink: not exactly the high character guy Baker seems to want (and JH seems to favor). I'm sure there was more than one player who abused the nightlife more than they should've. It just depends which player, if Hundley was one of those players, it might have had a serious impact on his production as well as a bad back and injuring his thumb on every sinker/splitter thrown to him. The Cubs should be working on ways to discover advantages of the early start times instead of complaining about them or looking for players with a perpectual BAC of .00.

    Neither do the Cubs. The Cubs are not a bad organization. They have a lot of very good parts that just don't fit together. The Cubs didn't have enough parts when healthy to compete for the division. Compatibility mattered very little for the Cubs this year. Injuries mattered more than how well they mesh. I damn sure won't use injuries as an excuse for this team, they didn't have the talent. The Cubs need more high priced talent by spending less on overpaid stop-gaps whose roles should be used by younger players making less (Burnitz-Murton/Cedeno-Nomar might be examples for next year). Of course, the Cubs have to build up that system of young players especially from the position side. But, compatibility is much further down the ladder.

    The first part of that article concerns me more. The Cubs don't need more high character players unless the productivity comes with it. I'd rather have a hung-over productive player than a sober overpaid one.

    He's had 5 starts against Houston thie year I believe, going 4-0 with an ERA under 1. Somehow, they'll remember him when he di well against them. You never forget when a pitcher does well or poorly against you. any film session will remind how well he did against them. Baseball isn't about memory anymore, you have hours of film from different angles on each pitcher.

    I know Andy becomes the scapegoat from being here 10+ years, but the Cubs have taken a step in the right direction under his leadership. He has done very well as a stepping stone between the fiscal side of baseball and the product on the field. It would be out of his role to make any managerial or roster decisions, I can't fault him for the disappointments of the last 2 years, I can give him credit for the job he did as a GM after Lynch was re-assigned (I thought Andy did the best he could with what he had for a team building for the future).

    Cruz is a better defensive OF'er than Matthews. Hairston could play as the 5th OF'er, but would more than likely play the IF as well. Michaels could likely be had via trade as CP mentioned Philly will possibly consider trading him and the Cubs should standing in line. Cruz made 3 mil., he's an ideal 3rd OF'er. I don't see LA bringing him back unless they unload MB which might happen.

    You want Cruz Jr as 4th OF, and Hairston as 5th OF? Who are you 1-3 OF? Those are pretty expensive guys to have on your bench when we're talking about making the upgrades needed throughout the starting lineup. Goony, please correlate this thread with the thread in Transaction about the Cubs OF.

    When you see Perez, Macias, or Patterson hitting 1/2, the only reason why they'd be up there over Murton has to be speed.

    I'd want Cruz Jr. as the 4th OF'er. You can still brink Hairston back as the 5th OF'er, utility IF'er spot. Hairston is ideal for a role like Macias currently has. Put Hairston in Macias' role and you'll have a very good lineup/bench.

    Murton would be a tailor made 2 hole hitter, were it not for the manager of our team. His approach is that of a #2 hitter, he just hits from the wrong side. But, he hits well enough to the right side to make up for not being able to block the C's view, if the runner takes off for 2B. If Walker is the leadoff hitter I don't think that would make it a problem. If they don't get a leadoff type for CF, I'd prefer it being Walker 1/Murton 2 next year. Walker eliminates the threat of a steal which seems to hold more weight than it should for baker.

    I don't think so. The Cubs will need a better 4th OF'er regardless. He got caught in the Marlon Byrd disappointment and now platooning with Lofton.

    I'd hit Michaels 1st, Murton 2nd, Lee 3rd, Giles 4th, Ramirez 5th, Nomar 6th, Walker 7th, and Barrett 8th. http://www.baseballprospectus.com/dt/michaja01.shtml Goony, have you not seen me mention his name throughout this thread? :) Walker is more than adequate as a #2 hitter, he's a good situational hitter, works the count, and draws BBs while hitting for a nice avg. and does not strike out much. Nomar is not a good #5 hitter, I think his SLG or OBP won't be where they need to be to drive in Lee or Ramirez in a similar fashion as Burnitz. Put Nomar 5th and they'll need improvement from that spot as a run producer, don't bring him back and put Barrett/Murton there and the problem intensifies with the #5 hitter.

    I'd rather see Giles hitting 4th than 2nd, if they have hit 2nd they better have more pop in the middle of the order. B/c I'd rather have someone like Walker/Murton hitting 2nd and putting Giles 4th and Ramirez 5th than having Giles hit 2nd bumping Ramirez 4th and Nomar 5th.

    Philly has some odd decisions to make, Michaels has some legal troubles, Lofton has been very productive and likes Manuel, and they have the AAA (IL) MVP waiting for his shot.

    He has a .545 SLG away from Petco. You get me one more higher OBP guy (Michaels) along with someone like Walker/Murton hitting 2nd and there is enough OBP there to put Giles between Lee and Ramirez. His power (would be 3rd highest on the team). Putting him 4th you could still use his higher OBP as having Ramirez hit behind him will do and maximize his power to dirve in hitters like Lee, Michaels, Murton/Walker.

    The only team I see being a player is the Dodgers of those 3. Mets, they'll have to trade either Cameron, Floyd, or Beltran. Dodgers w/Werth's disappointment could enter the picture. SD will be in it as well. Cardinals-similar to the Cubs depends on how they feel about Walker as well as Sanders. Personally, I think both will be back.

    Could have a very productive offense just from adding another .400 OBP in there. Nobody else may ever get on base, score, or knock in a run, but the combo of Giles, Lee, Ramirez, and Barrett should put up a lot of offense. Add Walker and a healthy Nomar, and the offense has the chance to actually be good. Exactly. They'll need to establish another higher OBP guy at the top, that isn't Giles, but Giles would immediately create more offense from ramirez and whomever hits behind him. Unfort., Burnitz has taken the role of most likely to benefit from having two superior hitters in front of him and not done enough with it. You get a higher OBP at the top and in the middle, this avg. offense will turn into a very good one. That's why my priorities for the OF would be signing Giles and trading for Michaels. The rotation should be improved by health and experience for Williams. Bullpen needs more experience and 1-2 players from becoming very good.

    I think the Cubs should make a play for Jason Michaels from Philly or someone like Langerhaus from ATL to address CF. As far as RF, I think Burnitz will be back (I don't approve of it), but Giles would be ideal, signing him is another story. Giles is the off-season priority, if I was Hendry. Get him and everything could fall into place.
