    Agreed, the ability to put it on the black with life is more important than the velocity. Of course, where a pitcher sits with his velocity is more important than where he topped out a couple of time.

    As far as radar guns... Although I wasn't there, radar guns are better used in multiple groups rather than just one gun. I've seen groups of 5 radar guns (all stalkers) where the velocity ranges from 82 to 88. It all depends on how well they are calibrated. Stalker guns are notorious for giving readings of 111-115 MPH when in need of a tune-up.

    I don't know, dealing with media quotes can be separate from what is going on behind the scenes. Give Balt. and Patterson credit for his improvements and hope the Cubs have taken something from this beyond what they rec'd in return.

    I hope they did some self-evaluation, anytime a player that didn't work out and yet finds success elsewhere is reason enough to re-examine what was done and what could've been done differently as a situation like what happened to Corey might happen again. I don't know how they tried to change Corey's approach so I'm unclear the impact it had on him. The best way to move on is to not let it happen again.

    The ability to bunt for a hit requires skill and good coaching to be successful. I fail to see how Corey taking a greater advantage of his speed is considered a negative or should be taken with a grain of salt as far as his improvement. The most dramatic improvement w/Corey has been the amount of green lights he has been given on 1B. Corey has always been a coachable kid and quiet sometimes to a fault. Baltimore has taken an approach that has worked w/him so far, they should be given credit for their work and Corey should be given equal amount of credit for his improvements. I'd still like to see him learn zone hitting and choke up more with 2 strikes and pepper the ball.

    Those starters when they get days off aren't used to coming in off the bench, Neifi is more conditioned to coming in as a quick replacement. Walker has been given the role of the unathletic starting 2B, starters don't come off the bench, they're too cold.

    You have to mix it up to try and find whatever works is the common theme among lineups like this. Too bad that doesn't apply when your lineup goes from bad to worse.

    Oddly, I think most managers would keep Pierre hitting leadoff. Of course, that is what usually separates the good ones from the bad ones. I think he'll be gone by the AS Break and Chris will be the new interim manager as the Cubs play .500 ball the rest of the year, while playing better they'll lack enough fire to merit keeping him as the permanent manager. I do believe that Gonzalez will be the new manager next year. Although, I have Hershiser as my fav. choice, but given what happened with the last bigger name, it'll be more low key.

    When he realizes that the Cubs have no one to drive runners in after using an out on a sacrifice, then we'll talk. But, when was the speed getting on base in the past? The last guys with above avg. speed.... Patterson, Macias, Womack, Goodwin?

    This stretch has been worse than '97. During the 14 gamne losing streak, they were outscored 78-36. In the last 14 games, they been outscored 76-30.

    While the NY media is beyond ridiculous, there is reason why they can mention possible based on previous results of the past. The media has mentioned Soriano, Sanders, Hunter, Cabrera, Abreu, and Stewert. So far, the Chicago media has mentioned Millar and Conine, but they like Conine better b/c of defense. It frustrates that team doesn't do everything it can to field a winner. Of course, it frustrates me more that they have a different core of values in regards to roster composition.

    I'm not talking about just this instance, you can go back to '04 and Tejada. If Tejada was a need, there are only a couple of teams that would go after him if they were paying the current SS 5mil, I think the Cubs need that same mind-set. Of course, that has to be based upon going after the right player at a market value price (which I think Tejada rec'd).

    While I've never been one for overreacting, if the Yankees do get a high priced replacement for Matsui, does it add validity to the possible passive nature that Hendry is using in adding onto this roster? Everyone knows this team has holes, while it'll take more than one player to fix this offense, I wish there could be anything tangible as far as a willingness to improve this team before the A-S break. Obviously at this stage there's a severe risk for overpaying (especially with a declining farm system which needs as many assets as poss.), but I'd like to see be more aggressive. Maybe I'm wrong about Hendry's passive nature in '06, but if they have any belief of saving the season, he'll have to do more than he has done in the past and sooner.

    That's like saying a team that is struggling with their pitching staff & is looking at two pitchers, but they prefer the one that is the better hitter.
