    You're showing what happened, you're not showing why it happened? This is the problem with stats, Marquis won't improve based on what you provided... He's pitching with flaws that he didn't early on and until he corrects them, he's likely going to get rocked and those aren't statistical flaws telling me he'll likely struggle, those are pitching flaws.

    I'm curious to see how Hill would pitch more pissed at the batters than himself. Obviously, he has been good overall but not as sharp as he was early on. It seems like he beats himself up too much and loses that edge.

    While I consider Murton to be a subpar corner OF'er in the grand scheme of things, for the Cubs to get anything of value for him they also have to show they value his assets. If the Cubs treat him as a spare part, more than likely he be traded as one and given a chance to surpass those expectatioons by the team trading for him. Given the potential options right now in LF during Soriano's stint on the DL, I see no reason why he shouldn't play everyday which is more of an indictment of potential options rather than Murton's ability.

    Which is odd that over the last two years he's been worse vs. lefties as a sidearm/3/4 LH'er. In '05 his OPS vs. was .409. In all honesty, he's better than Eyre and Ohman and from the area.

    If a team wanted to upgrade their pen, he would be a good choice despite his age. I'm confused to why the Yankees would DFA him.

    As I previously mentioned, if his command and velo on his sinker are going to be 92 at the belt, he'll get rocked. I remember him being more around 88 at the start of the year with more movement and espec. better command.

    That's also around the time Theriot became the everyday SS, Fontenot would arrive 1 week later, Marmol began a more valuable role out of the pen while Eyre took a lesser role. Between Zambrano getting hot and everything I previously mentioned with Lou figuring out what works and what doesn't, I put more stock into that than a tirade leading to a 2 month hot streak. They got confidence from playing well and building upon that, not a manager getting tossed. Every team gets hot for stretches the Cubs have combined that and usually having more talent than the opponent to play well for the last 60 days.

    There's some legit concern there w/Marquis, (although I thought he pitched well enough vs. Philly to not merit much criticism for that one start) the command of his sinker has not been as good as it was earlier in the season. If his sinker remains belt high like it has for several of his last starts, he'll be putting some poor numbers. I think there's some extra work for Rothschild w/Marquis to make sure he doesn't fall into the same traps he did last year.

    Cubs need another character like him and he can provide some versitility, but with Ward (despite the injury) I don't see him as a possible fit. I see a bigger need for a RH'ed bat off the bench with some pop. Of course, moreso than a bat off the bench any serious upgrades should be considered at SS/CF, but that's wishful thinking at this point.

    That or raise his trade value just enough before the deadline. To do that, you would have to assume the Cubs were content with Pagan/Pie in CF, I just can't make that assumption.

    I'm pretty picky when it comes to pitch counts and excessive use of it, I applaude Piniella for pulling him early despite him pitching well. With that said, there were two games when the game was decided that he should've been pulled earlier (despite the poor production of the pen, there were arms avail. at the time) (4/28) and (5/15). I know I'm being excessive about pointing these days out, but with someone of the value of Z on the line, it pays to be extra cautious when you're allowed that luxury of a blow out. Piniella has surpassed me expectations so far.

    It's good their putting him in a position to succeed eight now, given what happened to him last year, but long-term if he continues to progress like he has recently, KC at some point down the road should re-examine whther or not he start again. To be honest, given how poorly Elarton has pitched for them, Greinke would be an improvement over him but it is in Greinke's best interest to stay at a productive spot for now.

    Not opposed to Barrett but in general reference. I don't know how they liked his game calling ability, but from the looks of it they didn't. I'm pretty sure Bowen and Hil called a better game than Barrett, it doesn't equate to Soto not being able to do so. Someone made reference that b/c Soto was at AAA that there's a chance he might not work well with the pitchers, I heard that wasn't the case with Soto or Fox in ST.

    Cubs pitchers would beg to differ. He is an automatic out every time in the lineup. Right now the Cubs are getting by because the rest of the offense is picking up the slack, but as the season progresses that production is not acceptable. I'm not disagreeing about his offense. All I'm doing is pointing out what I hear directly from the pitchers, including one Mr. Z. I think this point is lost so often. Its fine to use statistical tools to evaluate players, however sometimes people get so completely lost in a statistical bubble that they completely ignore human behavour. Its fine to throw up some numbers that state that Michael Barrett had no negative impact on the Cubs, however the statistics aren't showing that HE WAS IN A FREAKING FISTFIGHT IN THE DUGOUT WITH OUR ACE PITCHER IN THE MIDDLE OF A GAME !!! Hello !!! If you want a rookie catcher behind the plate based on his AAA numbers, fine. That doesn't mean the pitching staff wants him here in the middle of a pennant chase. Guess who's opinion matters? Pitchers in ST were complimentary with both Soto and Fox (oddly enough) on how they called games.
