  1. Sure, although I've said he's a utility player starting at SS. I don't want the Cubs to try and find out whether on Cedeno can progress to a utility player by starting him. As far as the improved range leading to more errors b/c of more chances, the difference in range is likely less costly than the difference in errors.
  2. How long do you have to wait for defensive potential, is the this same as waiting for offensive potential? Not only are we hoping he can hit, but now we're hoping he can make routine plays, this is a SS? I'll give him credit for hitting at AAA which provides some offensive hope, defensively, he has always shown to be too careless and prone to mistakes. This Winter did not help his cause, how many errors did he have at SS? (That's not including the games in the OF).
  3. Also released: Luis Astorga Matt Maredeo Ryan O'Malley
  4. The Cubs also released Hernan Ramos RHP and Joel Santo RHP
  5. I used to work in the Indy Leagues and had these sent directly to the my email.
  6. Bored with the names lately I've been mentioning? Cubs released 1B/LF Brian Dopirak and LHP Derrick Ellison.
  7. All this talk about offensive production from two player that are likely #8 hitters based on their talents, yet we're talking about SS and defense is still getting ignored.
  8. Until Cedeno improves defensively, he won't be a starting SS. Sure, he more offensive upside than Theriot b/c he can hit 10 HRs and 30 DBs but he still has to prove that and more importantly for me, he has to show the ability to field the position which is something he hasn't done yet either.
  9. Theriot draws BBs at a higher rate as well. In 2323 PAs in the minors Theriot drew 260 BBs In 2205 PAs in the minors Cedeno drew 141 BBs.
  10. Murton is likely a .270 EqA type of hitter or .285-290/.345-350/.445-.450 type of hitter, he's likely to hover around that .800 OPS mark. That's better than some of the LF'ers around, but it's not something sought after beyond a cheap salary.
  11. The ability to hit for avg. has value, the ability to assume that I am overstating its value should not be applied here.
  12. Why would you ignore it? Cedeno has a lower floor than Theriot and combine that with bad defense and I'll take the safer bet. Sure he has more pop in the bat, but neither one are likely to hit for a high avg. and Theriot has a better approach. If Cedeno was better with the glove, I'd go with him.
  13. i do, to some extent. he can be a starting major league outfielder for an average or bad team; the cubs aspire to be better than that, and it's understandable if they regard him as a 4th outfielder. however, to regard a player like murton as a 4th outfielder, you have to develop some of your own low-priced talent unless you are a team like the yankees, and can afford big money players at each position. if you can develop some players who turn into above-average players at their positions (pie, soto hopefully) then a guy like murton is a 4th outfielder. if you can't, then you probably need to use a resource like murton as a starter, and direct your funds toward other positions of need. Agreed. While he could start on some teams right now in LF, having him out there as your everyday LF'er means that you have to upgrade that position. It says something about a player when a player's salary is as vital as his abilities as far as why he is important to a club. He doesn't well enough compared to most starting LF'ers.
  14. Dempster is going to struggle beyond 5 since his pitch count will likely be around 100, Marquis is likely to be up and down, same thing w/Zambrano and Hill. They're sticking with a 5 man rotation thru April. Lou isn't going to micromanage these guys as far as double-switches, had they left Murton on the roster, Johnson could've been the double-switch option for Pie and Murton could've been the RH'ed bat off the bench. Lee isn't going to be double-switched & Johnson would come in Fukudome vs. a tough Lh'er, so Ward is the main LH'ed bat off the bench. This is why leaving Murton off the roster is the main mistake as Cedeno becomes the next RH'ed bat off the bench. They aren't likely to double switch Theriot while he hits leadoff as well as Derosa for Fontenot, Fontenot can play 2B, SS, and 3B and should've been in that role in case of an injury. Had they left Murton on the roster, they could've left with a productive 5 man bench.
  15. Definitely progress compared to looking back when Lee left and the drought that followed.
  16. If Cedeno could've proven by now that defensively he was less prone to mistakes on routine plays, I would be willing to accept the higher risk/reward offense he could provide. Combine the possibility that he might be worse offensively than Theriot in the short-term and more likely to struggle defensively, I would prob. go with Theriot. With that said, Theriot is a utility player starting at SS. While Cedeno still has to prove he's above a marginal player in the long-term.
  17. As I mentioned in the game thread, Hill had his best curve of the Spring, but he still has no command or control of that FB. I don't know if it's his delivery or the release point on his FB that's throwing him off but if you can't throw the FB for strikes at least 2 out of 3 pitches esp. to get ahead, you're playing w/fire. I think he'll get it worked out by the start, he did take steps from his last outing.
  18. Hill has probably missed his spot on 60% of the FBs right now, his curve has been impressive. I think he has his balance down, he needs to find the release point on the FB.
  19. Given how the Cubs rotation looks right now, Vargas would be the 4th best starter.
  20. Sammy was skinny to muscular, Cabrera appears to have gone from fat to trim.
  21. http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/spring2008/news/story?id=3309506 No surprises: (I'm assuming 7 in the pen early on) Z Lilly Dempster Hill Marquis Theriot Soriano Lee Ramirez Fukudome Derosa Soto Pie Lieber Marshall/Piggy (Eyre DL) Hart Wuertz Marmol Howry Wood
  22. Also released: Alan Rick-C Scott Koerber-LHP
  23. He's one of the top candidates for ROY. I love watching him pitch.
  24. It's not too early to worry, he has obvious flaws (long swing, expanding strike zone) and he still has to get the 1st step of hitting major league pitching and then once he does that, will he adjust to pitchers if they figure him out.
  25. Be like every minor league and college stadium I've been to and play Thunderstruck.
