  1. End of February now, and I'm bumping up this topic b/c I've been experiencing slowness issues at least since Monday. Just getting to this Site Suggestions, I counted to seven-one-thousand with total white screen. I feel like I'm back on dialup! :-)
  2. We should be getting back from NTC just before the Coors series, I'm hoping to get to go! It'll depend on my wife though, as she'll be about 8 months along at that time. I don't know if she'll let me sneak away for a day at that point. Do they have suites over there that aren't exorbitantly priced? Maybe you can take her with you. :-)
  3. I think that much of each person's perspective on the war in Iraq (and the greater war against terror, in a greater sense, if you want to go that far) is informed by each person's sense of history. Specifically, I think that how one feels depends on whether one draws a closer parallel between the current war and Viet Nam (it is actually two words, BTW), or the current war and WWII. So, what's your take?
  4. That's harsh about the Marlins. How about this - we send Agony to take over your duties through the first couple weeks in November? OTOH - if he could bobble the most important DP ball of his career, I cringe to think how he would handle national security... Regardless, good luck to you and your buddies upon deployment.
  5. The Pirates definitely are not to be underestimated this season - particularly their rotation (esp. Zach Duke - just wow). They are a step, maybe two, behind where Milwaukee was last season. In a perfect world, I would have liked a Zito one-year rental, for another bona fide starter who would START the year ready to go, and a GOOD lefty to boot. (Bad memories of the Shawn Estes albatross the 2003 team had to carry, except for that last game he pitched against Cincinnati, still haunt me.) But even without that, this team owes us 90+ wins in the regular season.
  6. Thanks for the article. I changed my subscription to the Times a while back, but I did like the Go 2 Guy articles. Boy, it's going to be another long season for the Mariners, LOL!
  7. What's that?
  8. Thanks. My guess is that the deal was to get arbitration off the table, then if this WBC doesn't kill Z, Hendry will get things locked up long term shortly thereafter.
  9. SOMEBODY must have posted it, but I don't see anything in the general baseball topics section or here in transactions.
  10. If Carrie Muskat has any brains at all, and I suspect she does, she is well-aware that her rebuttal was a sliver above ludicrous. I also suspect that Carrie originally put in those "saved the Cubs" comments tongue in cheek, but she's gotten so much grief about it that she had to say something. And a mere beat writer doesn't say, "Yes, the GM was an idiot to give a 2-year/$2 mil deal to a glorified second-string SS" - at least, not if she wants to keep her job as a beat writer. It's a living. Steve Stone couldn't even stay in this organization for calling out the manager and the front office, and Carrie doesn't have the following Stoney did. Bottom line, though, it's her own fault for trying to be cute. You need to pick your battles, but it's not wise to create needless ones in the first place.
  11. I'm not so much concerned for the short term as I am for the long term. Injuries are #3 on my Fears of the WBC list. Here are the other two, which are neck and neck (and frankly, muddied together) in terms of importance to me: 1) Our players will not be in proper condition for the regular season, or will learn bad habits such that they won't have enough "gas left in the tank" for September or any post-season play. 2) This feel-good PR, rake-in-the-dough, baloney tournament (yeah, I know, tell you how I really feel) flies directly in the face of what ST is supposed to be all about: honing your skills and developing rapport/cameraderie among your MLB teammates. Even with mid-season trades and expanding rosters, the guys you see in Feb and Mar are for the most part the guys you're going to see and be playing with in August, September, and (I hope in the Cubs' case) into the postseason.
  12. I wonder if my b/f has registered here? :)
  13. I know, I'm a brow-beating witch. So now he's done a 180 on the car and wants me to help him find something that I would like. It's his car; all I really care about is that it's automatic in the off chance that I would need to drive it for some reason, like if my Corolla were in the shop. I didn't mean to whip him - I just figured that a 47 YO grown man who has also refurbished autos (but hasn't done so in years - too time-consuming) should display a little more common sense in purchasing a vehicle.
  14. This Cavalier is also light blue - convertible. My b/f bought this thing - needs new upholstery also. Frankly, I haven't gotten a good look at it, as it was in a dark, dank, damp garage when he decided that he had to have it. Last night I let him have it about the car, mainly because I was pissed at him for lying to me about something else. I figure if you want a commuter car, you look for something 3-5 years old with 80,000 miles on it or so - at least, far less than 100,000. He's telling me he can't find anything. He saw a Sunbird - '93, 80,xxx, $2300 - but the roof is a bust. Personally, I think it's kind of stupid to be looking at any Pontiac (besides a Bonneville or maybe Grand Prix) anywhere near 100,000 miles. But he doesn't like Ford sedans and he doesn't trust imports. Never mind that my '90 Nissan served me well as second owner for 7 years (great mechanically, but the body wasn't all that), or that my '97 Corolla is doing well after almost 6 years with me as second owner. He'd rather base his opinions on half a dozen or so cars that were made in the early to mid 80s that crapped out on him.
  15. You just paid $300 for a 1984 Chevrolet Cavalier convertible to become your commuter car. You know the bearings are shot, but you're taking a calculated risk that the engine is all right, knowing that even if it isn't, you can get a new engine and have for all intents and purposes a new car. The engine should be replaced. You figure that along with refurbishings (seats need help) and such, you'll put $2,000 into the car. Is this a good purchase?
  16. So is that your prediction - the Cubs will win the division? I hope you're right! On the other hand, won't that mean three more years of Dusty Baker? Hmm...
  17. That reminds me, what does Johnny Damon look like nowadays?
  18. How does that work? A shot for every Ryne Sandberg slam? A beer per Bartmann reference?
  19. Bret Boone came to my mind. Perhaps they upped the roids during contract years?
  20. Okay I am totally geeking out here: Santo is from Seattle area; Ryno is from Spokane - can you imagine the grand opening if I could get either one of them or both to come? =P~
  21. Bremerton/Port Orchard is actually a fair hike from the place I'm thinking of. That's almost on the other side of Puget Sound; this is north Lake Washington. You'd need to hop on the ferry and drive a ways... or drive a lonnng ways around the Sound.
  22. Interesting. :-k I could also hedge my bet with Gonzaga basketball through March Madness - I graduated from the law school there, and there are a lot of us (undergrad and other alumni) in the Seattle area. I wonder if I could get some rich Lake Forest Park folks to put up some investment capital... Mind you, I've never done anything like that before. This would be pretty far out from Seattle downtown, though - you'd definitely need wheels to get there.
  23. Funny you should mention this. Yesterday I drove past a well-reputed bar and grill on the north side of Lake Washington, which I found out closed shop. I fantasized for a while about turning it into a Cubs joint: "North Side Bar & Grill? Nah, NorSHORE Bar & Grill!" Seattle people might think it was a misspelling of Northshore, but Chicago transplants and Cubs fans would get the difference." I'd put a beer garden in the back for summer and smokers (there's a statewide smoking ban for public places in Washington), and the customers could watch Cub games or have WGN radio piped into their booths. Unfortunately, I'm still paying my student loans and being a first-time restauranteur (or would that be restauranteuse? I am female) isn't something I really want to do. But I do wonder whether a Seattle Cubs bar would be popular for a long-term enterprise.
  24. Off topic (and point me to the proper thread if it's getting discussed someplace else, but what's wrong with Dempster? From the article: Expect more players to back out as the World Baseball Classic draws closer. Giants left fielder Barry Bonds and Astros left fielder Lance Berkman won't play for the U.S. due to physical concerns. Pitchers Ryan Dempster, Rich Harden and Eric Gagne are unlikely to play for Canada for the same reasons. :ohnoes:
  25. Tsk, tsk! Tom Landry is rolling in his grave right now! ;-)
