  1. Give him to the Mutts - I don't want RK back in Chicago again.
  2. I just can't do it. I can't root for the Sox, and I'm not too crazy about the Astros either. If I may get slightly political, it's been like the last two (at least) Presidential elections: hold your nose and pick the one you think stinks less. I can't remember being more disgusted with the Cubs and unenthusiastic about baseball as I am now, and that includes 1994 and the Braves/Yankees series in 1996.
  3. You sound like my b/f: "Pitchers' duels are boring." P.S. to Wolf: I didn't answer your question because I've never been an NHL fan. Might consider re-phrasing your question such that you get NHL fans (pre- and post-strike), because your "Yes" answer sounds to me like you want that audience.
  4. My choices in order... Hershiser Dierker McLaren Gonzalez. How did Orel get above Larry Dierker on your list, UK? You had some serious man-love for Larry Dierker.
  5. I completely disagree. Once the regular season is over, it's a level playing field. As a matter of fact, if the WC team is against a team in its own division, you might argue that they could have an advantage, having played the other team so many times an knowing them better than they would have in the old balanced schedule. FWIW, here's an excerpt from what I wrote in the Cards' MLB message board: "... I am sick to death of Wild Card teams getting into the World Series after a CONSISTENTLY good team put together a fantastic regular season. The introduction of the WC has been good for MLB from a business standpoint, but it has turned the validity of a pennant race the way of the dodo. I figure if your team does gets the most wins during the regular season, they should have an automatic berth to the NL/ALCS. IMO, MLB has turned the playoffs into the pro baseball equivalent of the NCAA Basketball Tournament, where "madness" prevails."
  6. Obviously, brevity is not ALWAYS the soul of wit.
  7. I've heard that eleventy-billionth-hand as well. Care to share the whys and wherefores?
  8. I hope you're right, I really do. But I'm just in a really sad mood, because I liked the idea of Girardi as manager, and now he's going to be the skipper of the freaking MARLINS. To add insult to injury, the Astros are going to the WS against the freaking WHITE SOX. Not to mention that one of the better pitching coaches in the game is also N/A, because (1) our GM re-signed Larry Rothschild (and the rest of this coaching staff) almost immediately, and (2) let's face it, Atlanta would not have let Mazzone go anywhere but the AL. I'm past lighting candles for a resurgent '06. If I don't see some truly amazing things this offseason, I'll just be hoping that it's the Reds in the cellar next year and not us.
  9. Where is Delgado going? Didn't he get the Marlins to pay a king's ransom for him when he was signed last year? What kind of trade are you thinking of? Strike One for Mr. Hendry this off-season. You stick with Dusty, Jim, and you will both be gone next year. Guess it's time for me to start lighting candles, because the front office certainly isn't helping the 2006 team.
  10. I like the optimism, but out of curiosity, how long have you followed the Cubs closely? Are you a "veteran" of '84 and '69, for instance? I don't believe in destiny, as that has burned me a few times (mainly in the romantic arena). I do, however, believe in good fundamental play, and the chumps I've seen the past couple years (exceptions apply) and retreads I've seen throughout the years on Cub teams apparently have not. If I see the Cardinals and the Astros in the playoffs again in '06, I think I may take an extended sabbatical from Major League Baseball. My growing suspicion is that there are unwritten rules in MLB, none of which favor the Chicago Cubs, even in the rare events when the team has a chance to do something.
  11. I'm sorry, but if you think you're going to get the best offensive free agent on the market for 4 million dollars per year. You sir, are insane. I'm pretty sure he meant 3/36. Somehow I just don't think it's right to give Giles an equivalent or better deal than Aram. Can't explain why, though.
  12. That kind of sucks that Dusty didn't get a ring when his Dodgers won the World Series in 1981. Or did he sell it on e-bay? :D  I saw the Yankees come back in (was it?) 1978 against the Dodgers, but my first-hand baseball knowledge is regrettably spotty from there until '83, when I started watching WGN. Did anyone buy Canseco's ring?
  13. Hmm. When I right-click on the picture, there is no "copy image location" option. There a "copy" option, but that's it. i'm using firefox As you should be. Work 'puter here. I'm afraid to DL Firefox because I train on this computer and there are some features of our product that don't work they way they're supposed to on Firefox. So I'm stuck with full I.E. 6.0 (or thereabouts).
  14. Cardinals here, though I'm not really watching the games. I have a short list as to why I would like the Cardinals to win the NLCS, and the WS: - They have played good baseball - heck, phenomenal baseball - for the past two seasons. I want to see a team who was GREAT all during the regular season get in, rather than some WC team that squeaked in as a consolation berth. As a matter of fact, I think the best team in either league should have an automatic berth to the championship series - they earned it. But, that's another discussion. - I am thoroughly disgusted with this year's Cubs - players and coaching staff, and front office - with a few notable exceptions (here's a hint as to who I DO like: I'd like to give Z 35 packs of Bazooka chewing gum - one for each of his appearances). I'm not sure whether these mercenaries with a baseball bat care about things like civic pride or fans, but in the event that they do, I'm hoping that the Cards winning and the Sox going deep into the playoffs lights a fire under them for '05. - As much as I think Busch Stadium is an artless piece of dung, it was the first place I saw a game in. And the Cards winning the WS in the last game of their own stadium appeals to me. But I won't be listing to Joe Buck drooling all over himself about it.

  16. Celebrity Deathmatch: Larry Bowa vs. Billy Beane. Now there's a vision.
  17. Uh-huh. Someone refresh my memory, but did the CNA Building, or ANY building, support the Cubs in 2003? Check this out: http://sports.yahoo.com/mlb/photo?slug=iljr10110140116.alcs_white_sox_angels_iljr101&prov=ap Someone please teach me how to get pics on here? Thanks!
  18. Heck with the kids (not really) - I wouldn't mind our guys spending an evening or two studying his swing.
  19. Because his famed forkballs turned out to be as straight as Hawkins' fastballs. That re-tread should NOT be brought back to the Cub organization.
  20. Devil's advocate here: why do we all tend to assume that Girardi has Cubbie blue running through his veins? Yes, he started here in (was it?) '89 - and we lost him to the expansion draft. But after that, he was with the Yankees, made significant contributions to the team and community there before going back to the Cubs and then the Cardinals. Girardi's best years arguably were spent as a Yankee, and he's with the organization now after retiring as a player. Is that necessarily a "bleed Cubbie blue" candidate? Not trying to be contentious, because I do the same thing when I think about Girardi.
  21. Three WS rings (albeit as a player, but it's three more rings than Baker has), strong ties to the Chicago community (he and his wife Kim are Northwestern grads, and his hometown is Peoria), experience with WINNERS. I personally think it's also a plus to have a former catcher at the helm because they tend to have had experience with all facets of the game (i.e., pitching, defense, hitting). Yes, he is an unproven commodity as a manager, but I'd like to give Girardi a try. A guy with community ties I would THINK would at least care about doing his best and getting the most out of his team, as opposed to the procession of wannabes and mercenaries who used their past semi-successes to command bigger bucks and then proceeded to rest on their laurels that the front office has hired. But I bet he goes to the Marlins. I hate it when Girardi goes to a team I dislike (Yankees, Cardinals, for example).
  22. Hey, is Len Kasper a Premium subscriber? I know, MYOB. And where does one subscribe to Premium these days?
  23. I want to thank you all for your thoughts on this one. As this thread evolved, it became clear to me that what I posted originally would be the way to go - at least, IMO. Thanks for helping me clarify my position and strengthen my reasoning!
  24. This is a terrible thing to write, but if I were a pitcher, I'd headhunt Beckett just for spite. Okay, I wouldn't really do it, but it's a gut feeling I get whenever I think about him, much less see his ugly Joyce DeWitt face on TV.
  25. If Len is reading: Dear Len: Please give copies of this to Jason DuBois with the following note: "No, it wasn't just your imagination", and to Ronny Cedeno with the following message: "Please open if you find yourself on the bench for more than two games in a row next season. Read, understand, and go to Jim Hendry and demand to be traded... even to Kansas City."
