  1. But isn't this better than not tending him a contract? I mean I think (K)orey pretty hit rock bottom here and needs a change of scenery. Hendry totally mishandled the Sosa and Farnsworth deals, but I think this is different. If he never pans out, then this isn't a terrible trade, IMO.
  2. Hendry likes Band of Brothers and couldn't find Otis Nixon.
  3. Do you think this is a better move than non-tendering him? Trading him is indeed a better move than non-tendering but he would have been good as a backup OFer especially now that we all know Grissom will be our guy. I must have missed the memo - I didn't know Grissom was going to be our guy? I don't think it was ever going to be Grissom vs. Patterson (I'd take Patterson in the 11th though, TKO, fwiw).
  4. He just got one from Baltimore. Obviously I don't know for sure, but I think he's done with SS, considering there isn't much else out there, unless the Lugo talk increases. My guess is he's happy with Cedeno and more than happy with the idea of Perez as the backup. I wonder though if all this talk about SS this winter means he's really not as hot on Ronny as would be expected by his aggressive promotion of Cedeno earlier in his career. Maybe he'll look for another 2B so Neifi can start at SS. God I hope he just starts Cedeno. Being a quality offensive SS in the National League is really not that difficult. Cedeno, IMO, could easily be a top 5 SS next year.

I think he would have been a good speed option off the bench as well, a la the Red Sox use of Roberts.

  7. I think St. Louis is still the team to beat going into this season. But they have some serious question marks as well. They added Juan Encarnacion, who had a decent season last year, but was above his career norms (.268/.316/.440). I would bet he'd regress towards that line. They lost Grudz and Sanders, replacing them with garbage and Very Taguchi. Their pitching staff lost Morris, replacing him with the Pontoon Boat and they also feature a revamped pen. The core is still together and is probably the best 3-4-5 in baseball. I'd say Edmonds would decline next year if I hadn't been saying it for the past 3 years. I do wonder how Rolen will return, coming off of another injury. I think that our ability to compete with St. Louis depends on three things: a) Somebody other than Neifi! playing everyday, be it at SS or 2B b) Murton's development and c) the pitching. I think, if Dusty uses the players right, which I realize is a huge if, the Cubs have a chance to surprise a lot of people.
  8. I think Soriano's upside is higher than Walker's. I don't think he would do this, but he is capable of hitting .290/.330 with 30 somethin' homers. Since Walker is going to be traded apparently, I wouldn't mind Soriano taking his place, especially considering the friendly hitters parks in the NL Central.
  9. If we aren't going to have Walker play 2B, we might as well get Soriano to keep Neifi! away from a starting gig.
  10. I hope Welly doesn't read this board. He's gonna think no one likes him.
  11. Wasn't Hairston considered a solid 2B before he lost his job to Roberts in Baltimore and became a supersub? I wouldn't mind him at 2B with Cedeno at short. A 1-2 of Pierre, Hairston should help Lee and Ramirez.
  12. Think AA prospects. I doubt we can get better at the moment. Put me down for thinking that Corey goes to Seattle for a PTBNL, and then Reed goes to Boston for Arroyo. That sounds about right. Talk about playing second-fiddle in a trade, geez/
  13. The Panthers scare me. Maybe I just don't respect the Bears' ability to score as much as I should, but I could easily see them stealing a touchdown from us, and beating us like 7-3. Hope that doesn't happen though.
  14. Rich Hill goes to 11!! http://img521.imageshack.us/img521/3354/spinaltap0in.jpg
  15. When was the last time Hendry paid appropriate value for a bench/role player? Nearly every one over the past 2 seasons has been overpaid. You're right. IMO the last true "quality" bench player we had was Hollandsworth, who was a decent fourth outfielder. I guess when we had Grudz and Walker the bench was solid. I'm just hoping he sees his power bat and brings him in. Can Branyan even play the OF? IIRC he can kind of play LF. How about the Jones/Grissom, Murton/Branyan platoon corner outfield? If we could get one in center we'd have a company, forget platoons!

  17. Branyan would be let go, according to the Rotoworld post. So we could have him for nothing. Like he fell of the back of a truck.
  18. Hendry better realize that signing a guy like this for less than 800K is a bargain. Worry about his role or where he plays after you sign him JH.
  19. Russell Branyan - 3B - Brewers Tom Haudricourt of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel speculates that the Brewers could let Russell Branyan go on Monday, when they need to free up a 40-man roster spot for Corey Koskie. Branyan signed a non-guaranteed, $800,000 deal last month The Brewers were looking to trade him, but there hasn't been any interest, even though there are a bunch of teams he could help. He'd be an upgrade as a third baseman against right-handers for contenders like the Twins, Phillies and Giants or he could help the Orioles or or Giants as a first baseman. We could also see the A's picking him up if they decide Frank Thomas is too much of a risk. Jan. 8 - 3:57 am et
  20. Anybody know how many runs Neifi! might save at 2B over Walker?
  21. It may be true that Cedeno will become a special player. However, the only thing Joey Cora knows about baseball is that it's a very difficult game to play. And Cedeno can't be ROY. Plus Cora is a WSox bum, so special player is pretty subjective if you ask me.
