  1. Sure, Dusty gets a lot of credit for his Cub teams not walking, but let's give credit where it is due. To Mr. Jim Hendry. No manager could possibly get the Cubs of the past few years to walk. The players didn't walk with other teams, and they didn't walk for Dusty. Dusty had his faults, but he gets too much credit for this one. And I think one reason is that he always defended his players free swinging to the media, as he usually defended his players in general.
  2. It looks like the Arizona Cardinals are WHO WE THOUGHT THEY WERE!! Isn't the NFL great? One week they dominate the Bears and the next week, they get worked by the pathetic Raiders. I love it.
  3. He's always been one of my favorite players. His injuries have been frustrating, but it's tough to fault him for his attitude.
  4. That'll be the day. When Jim Hendry trades for a guy like Manny. What's next? Getting Adam Dunn? Reasons why Hendry would never go after Manny. 1) He has no "tools" (with the exception of his bat, which is one of the best in the game) 2) He plays horrible defense. 3) He's fat 4) He walks too much (okay, I'm being facetious, but look at Hendry's track record) Of course, I'd love to have him on the Cubs. He could singlehandedly make the offense respectable.
  5. According to the trib. If he's willing to try closing, bring him back. They have no other real options, and they could probably get him back for a reasonable price. He could potentially be another Gagne, and I'd hate to see him leave. Maybe its a little risky, but the upside is definitely worth it IMO. I'd be way more hesitant if he's set on starting. http://chicagosports.chicagotribune.com/sports/baseball/cubs/cs-060927cubsbrite,1,3025243.story?coll=cs-home-headlines
  6. Rex is a different quarterback under pressure. He made a lot of wobbly throws and unforced errors when he the Vikes blitzed. I think this comes from lack of experience. A lot of it is mental, because he had more time than he thought a few times. When he had time in the pocket, he was as good as usual. I'm not concerned about it. I'm glad he experienced pressure today, so he'll be better next time.
  7. Wow, good point about Soriano's walks. If he keeps walking so much, he may turn Hendry off to him.
  8. I'm going to guess that Wrigley Field itself has plays a significant role in that. Who OWNS Wrigley? Does the Trib take in all the proceeds from a game (ie Tix, concessions, etc?) Is there any money owed on Wrigley, or is essentiaully paid for? That's the excuse that the Trib always uses. I don't buy it. The Cubs do well in attendance despite Wrigley and have high ticket prices. TV and radio always make up the bulk of revenue for any given team. Look at the Yanks.
  9. We should keep him as a reliever. I always loved the idea, and if he's willing to do it, then he's probably willing to take a pay cut. He was unstoppable as a reliever last year. It would make me sick if he because an ace reliever for another team.
  10. What do we make without the money laundering operation known as WGN? Explain how one of the most popular teams in sports with one of the biggest and most loyal fan bases in one the the top sports markets in the country makes less than the Padres and the Reds? The Trib should sell the team then. Obviously they are completely inept financially.
  11. I wish Dusty were man enough to make a statement like that. How much of a man does it make Hendry for him to make that statement, and then continue his non-OBP, fast, toolsy player philosophy that has utterly failed this year? Jimbo's an incompetent dumbass, but I respect him for taking some responsibility for his mistakes. Is responsibility simply apologizing? I guess I'm not impressed until he fixes those mistakes...and I've not seen any signs that is close to happening. No matter what that guy says, it's just talk. He doesn't give a crap about OBP. Even when we didn't suck so bad, we'd be at the bottom of the league in walks and near the bottom of the league in runs scored, even if we managed to hit homers and hit for decent average. That's Jimbo's fault. Caesar Isturis is just another one of those guys. I don't care about how he judges talent. You win some and lose some when you're trying to guess how people are going to turn out. But Hendry's philosophy seems to be all wrong.
  12. Well, Dlee does walk, but I don't consider Aram and Barrett good walk guys. Neither Aram nor Barrett walk a lot, and neither walked a lot before Hendry acquired them. They are both very good at not striking out, but neither draws a lot of walks given their BA's. Nomar was the same type of player. Good hitter, low walks, low K's.
  13. Bo Jackson was the best I've ever seen and its a crying shame that 1) he chose baseball to start with and 2) his career had to end. In the few games he had a chance to play, he was flat out unstoppable. He performed at the NFL level as Reggie Bush did in college. Always the fastest guy on the field, he could also run right over linebackers. We can't give him the best career award, obviously. The other best I've seen: Barry Sanders- nobody had moves and elusiveness like him. Walter Payton- obviously a homer pick, but the first great back I've ever watched Not old enough to have seen the greats before Payton's time Most overrated: Emmitt Smith- a great back with great legs, but Matt Suhey could have rushed for 1000+ with some of his Cowboy lines.
  14. Well stated Carniby. I'm not so sure that the team doesn't need a change in coaching. In fact, I think it does. But its hard to point to many games and say it was Dusty's fault. You can't even totally blame him for the lack of plate discipline or lack of fundamentals. For the past 5 years, the Cubs have been loaded with guys who have little plate discipline and poor fundamentals regardless of where they have played. Dusty always seems to defend his players, and that's why in the past, he has gotten a lot out of teams that were not so great on paper. I agree that the team, as assembled, is garbage. I might be in the minority, but I point the finger straight at the GM, Jim Hendry. He deserves most of the blame. He doesn't know the value of the walk at all. He hasn't shown an unwillingness to dish out some money, as managers in the past, but he's been willing to dish out millions at Neifi Perez and middle relief. The capital he earned by getting players like Lee and Aramis has worn off with me a long time ago.
  15. I still remember him continuing to trot Byung Hyun Kim out there over and over in the WS so he could pitch BP to the Yanks. But at least he won one. More than I could say for the Cubs in the past 98 years.
  16. Happy they're looking to workout Bargnani. Not happy they're considering Morrison. Everyone blows so much smoke; hard to know what to believe. It might be in the interest of a team to make a promise to a player, so that that its less likely he'll blow away a team during a workout and have them trade up. But it puzzles me that a player would cancel workouts based on a promise. All this stuff just seems really shady. And whoever made Shelden Williams a promise in the top 5 is crazy.
  17. The article makes him sound very intriguing. But I'm skeptical. If he's that athletic with that much upside, I don't see how he would be around at 16 in this draft. Players with almost no skills have been taken much higher based on athleticism and upside.
  18. I think that it is clear that Jim Hendry has been very bad at acquiring players with a good OBP/BA differential. It just seems as if he doesn't value OBP. Even some very good players he has acquired, Aramis and Barrett for example, are have relatively bad OBP's in relation to average historically. He tends to go after players like Nomar (another one with a historically bad OBP/average differential) and shy away from players like Dunn (very good OBP/average differential). Walker is the only player on the roster who has consistently produced a decent OBP/average differential, and we kept hearing that the Cubs wanted to trade him. Murton is young, but he seems to be that type of player also. I won't give Jim too much credit for that one. So, from his track record, Jim Hendry does not value OBP. Too bad its supposed to be the most important offensive statistic. And you can see that the Cubs, in the past few years, have been horrible at producing runs given the average and slugging that they have produced. Always near the bottom of the majors in walks. We can blame the coaching staff, sure. But I give a lot of the blame to Jim Hendry.
  19. Well, Furcal saved Hendry from himself. Another toolsy player who can't hit seem to hit worth squat now. Good one Jim. And we kept hearing he wanted to unload Todd Walker. A middle infielder who can actually hit.
  20. Good for you Pax. Who would we possibly want? Stephon Marbury or Steve Francis? I'll pass. Jamal Crawford? Man, I wouldn't take him back if they paid his ridiculous salary. I don't doubt that Isaiah wants Gordon. I'm sure he does. But the deal sounds absurd.
  21. Hendry should start by firing himself. Dusty has done a horrible job, but he's not the one who has continued to stand pat on a problematic offense. The offense has been a problem for a long time, and it's rearing its ugly head yet again. I don't think we can just point to Lee's injury and Dusty's ineptitude.
  22. Why is that? If I weren't a fan I'd still be rooting for the upset. I'm rooting for the Cavs just to see how many ways the talking heads can fall in love with LBJ if he makes it to the ECF. are you saying they don't have a reason to fall in love with him? on a related note, scottie pippen said before the cavs-wizards game that lebron would end up being better than jordan. I'm saying that it's ridiculous how much the media falls over themselves to praise these star players. I can't even imagine MJ playing in this kind of climate. And Pippen is just falling into the idiot climate of stupid statements that abounds on ESPN. Did you see the series he put up? 35.7 PPG on 51% from the field, 7.5 RPG, 5.7 APG to go with two game winners. It's not like this is average performance getting hyped just because he's LeBron. The first game winner was a travel, and the second did not face resistence from even a semblence of defense. That being said, LeBron is an absolutely fantastic player and, at the age of 21, is the second best player in the league today besides Kobe. As one of the biggest Jordan homers of all time, and as someone who used to refer to Lebron as LeBrick James, I don't think Scottie's statement is so ridiculous. In fact, I happen to think Scottie is one of the more insightful commentators on TV. LeBron is nowhere near MJ now, but I think he can get there. He doesn't seem to have MJ's competitiveness, which may keep him from getting there in the end, but talent wise, he has it.
  23. I'm done watching the Bulls play a horrible game, and now I come here to see that the Cubs are getting beat by Juan Cruz. Nice.
  24. Well, now is the point where we can say- 6 rings. And then sit back and watch the Heat take an exit before the finals.
  25. It just wasn't meant to be. Whenever you think its turning, the Bulls seem to shoot themselves in the foot. Or get a bad call. Like that play. They had a steal, instead its a dunk for Shaq.
